After four decades of museum and exhibition operations, the Neue Pinakothek is undergoing fundamental refurbishment. The museum is therefore closed for several years. During this time, selected major works of 19th century painting and sculpture are exhibited in the Alte Pinakothek and in the Sammlung Schack. The selection ranges from classicism and Romanticism to the beginning of modernism. Under the title ‘From Turner to van Gogh’, the 19th century is now being relaunched in a different form. The works of the Romantic artist Caspar David Friedrich, the French Impressionists and the pioneers of modernism from Édouard Manet and Claude Monet to Paul Cézanne and Vincent van Gogh will continue to be on display. Newly exhibited are groups of works by the important Realists Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller and Adolph Menzel, which could not be shown in previous years. One cabinet brings together intimate interior depictions from the Symbolist and fin de siècle eras.

A re-encounter with old acquaintances such as rarely displayed discoveries in the Alte Pinakothek! The presentation of works from the collection of Early German, Early Netherlandish and Flemish paintings of the 16th and early 17th century promises a surprise or two. Different facets of a theme that is one of the core tasks of painting are examined: namely storytelling. How and by whom are stories told and what do they relate? What aims have artists and patrons pursued at different times, and what audiences do they address? And is this always obvious at all or are those looking at a work sometimes even deliberately misled? These and other questions are raised in this presentation in which often nothing appears to be as it seems at first glance.

From fall 2025, “Long Story Short” will tell a story of contemporary art from the 1960s to the present from the holdings of the Brandhorst Collection.Each room will be an exhibition in its own right: from Arte Povera to monographic presentations, from formal-aesthetic discourses to socio-political themes. Works that have never been shown before and new acquisitions will enter into a dialog with the museum’s icons and open up new perspectives on the collection, which now comprises over 1600 works.

This exhibition explores the phenomenon of graphic writing through handwriting, calligraphy, and typography. From the non-formal art of the 1950s to the conceptual art of the 1960s, the more than 100 works on display reveal the enduring importance of writing across generations and cultures to this day. Artists create fantastical alphabets and abstract sign language, compose poems and calendar entries, reference literary works and political documents, and transform thoughts and dialogues into information in forms such as spray paint, images, gestures, or embroidery. The performative nature of writing is evident both in the material and physical traces of painting and photography, and in grand, large-scale works.

The BTS WORLD TOUR IN MUNICH 2026 stands as a highly anticipated stop on the South Korean boy band’s fourth global concert tour, set to take place at the iconic Allianz Arena on July 11 and 12, 2026. This extensive tour, which begins in Goyang, South Korea, on April 9, 2026, and concludes in Manila, The Philippines, on March 14, 2027, spans an impressive 79 dates across 34 cities in 23 countries. Marking BTS’s return to live performances following mandatory military service, the tour represents a significant milestone for the group and their worldwide fanbase. Notably, this series of headline shows is the first since their 2021–22 Permission to Dance on Stage tour, underscoring the band’s enduring influence and commitment to delivering unforgettable experiences. Martino Gamper will be in residence at Haus der Kunst, creating a series of newly designed chairs, a development of his celebrated long-running project 100 Chairs in 100 Days. During the run of the exhibition, the new chairs will be freely reconfigured by the public and the staff — to gather, to rest, and to play — turning the Mittelhalle into a vibrant, constantly changing social space. The reconfigurations will be based on a series of rules that Gamper will deliver at the beginning of the project, defining a choreography that will transform the appearance of the whole space weekly. Alongside furniture, Gamper will create a new light design that will change the atmosphere of the Mittelhalle from a usually transitory space to one of gathering. Speaking about the project, Martino Gamper said: “For Haus der Kunst, the furniture will be made in a variety of ways including craft and industrial processes, using a huge range of materials. The chairs will be experimental, fit for purpose but imperfect, rather than products they are vehicles to explore seating as a sculptural object.” The project highlights the path towards new forms of engagement and learning that Haus der Kunst started in 2023. WangShui’s practice explores various dimensions of human-machine entanglement through video, sculpture and painting. The exhibition has been developed as a form of screenplay in which the machine has become the scriptwriter, applying countless variations of its training material. Featuring their newly commissioned live simulation Certainty of the Flesh (2023) alongside a selection of ethereal paintings etched into aluminium, Window of Tolerance reflects our symbiosis with the technologies that are now determining our lives.

The exhibition title “Return” refers not only to her return to Munich, where she once studied at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in the class of Sean Scully, but also to a reflection on the return to the fundamentals of painting. Bittl’s participation in 2020 in the major show of 53 artists of today’s forty-year-olds “Jetzt! Junge Malerei in Deutschland”, exhibited by the curators of the Kunstmuseen Bonn and Wiesbaden, the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz and the Deichtorhallen, Hamburg, places Bittl’s work in the context of the best representatives of painting as a leading discipline of art. Viola Bittl is known for her insistent and multi-layered works that explore the boundaries of painting and create a dialogical space between form and abstraction.
