Shanghai is situated on the estuary of The Yangtze and has the Huangpe River flowing through it. The two Chinese characters in the city’s name ‘hàng/zan’ and ‘hÇŽi/hae’ together mean "Upon the Sea" and this name can be dated back to the 11th century of the Song dynasty. It has about 24.28 million residents and is the most populous area in China and the second-most in the world. It is one of the four municipalities of the People’s Republic of China and is a global centre for finance, technology, and transport and is also has the world’s busiest container port, namely the Port of Shanghai.

Getting to Shanghai
Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport (SHA) and Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG) are at a distance of approximately 19 km and 46 km from the city respectively and it would take about 30 minutes from the former and 50 minutes from the latter to reach the city. One can easily find flights from Bangkok to Shanghai because there are several airlines offering their services. There are also direct flights from Bangkok to Shanghai; some flights to Shanghai have one connecting stop in between. Numerous cheap flights from Bangkok to Shanghai are operated by airlines like Philippine Airlines and China Eastern. The overall flight duration varies from 4 hours 20 minutes to 15 hours depending on the duration of the layover in between.

What to do in Shanghai
The world’s fastest train, the Maglev train is the best way to get the modern feel of Shanghai and in fact, can be ridden straight from Pudong Airport. An evening boat or ferry cruise on the Huangpu River or Bund Sightseeing Tunnel is the best way to explore the colonial structures and architecture in the Bund. There are several cultural and historical attractions like Yuyuan which is the only remaining Ming Dynasty garden in Shanghai and the most revered at the same time, the Shanghai Museum which has 120,000 artefacts including 400 beautifully-decorated bronzes. Travellers can enjoy the bird’s eye view of the city from the Oriental Pearl TV Tower and Shanghai tower of which the latter is the highest building in China and the second-tallest building in the world. For shopping enthusiasts, Nanjing Road is a lot like New York's Fifth Avenue but with Chinese cultural elements along with Tianzifang which is situated in the old French quarter and is a shopping area for tourists and also has several great cafés. There is also Shanghai Disneyland Park which also has unique cultural features of China. Another must-visit is the water towns among which Zhujiajiao Water Town is the most prominent for having various fascinating canals, architecture, and bridges. The city further has a lot of old architecture of European origin in several national styles and in the styles of many historical eras.
Tip: The cheapest and efficient way to get around the city is through taxis and the metro so travellers are advised to plan their transportation to their taste beforehand.
Where to stay
One of the best areas is People’s Square which is right in the middle of the city from which most of the attractions are at a walkable distance and is also teeming with innumerable places to shop and eat from along with several museums. Jing'an is more like the modern centre of the city is also the busiest with quite a few places to eat, drink and shop with a few quirky venues also tucked away. For the plush and luxury hotels, The Bund is the best area for the five-star hotels facing the skyscrapers. Lujiazui in the district of Pudong on the east of Huangpu River has several luxurious hotels that offer the best views of the city although the accommodation here is more on the pricier side.
