Brief intro about Shanghai:
Shanghai is the largest city in China and one of the most populous cities in the world. There’s a lot to the city—depending where in the city they are, visitors might find themselves surrounded by dense skyscrapers, European-style colonial buildings, or a bustling park amongst lush greenery.
The city is home to one of the world’s major airports and is often a popular destination and transit point on intercontinental itineraries. Tourists visiting Shanghai are spoiled for choice and have the option of experiencing world-class accommodation, dining, and shopping.
Airport & Terminal Information
Shanghai has two airports. If you’re flying in from Sanya, you can book flights to either Pudong International Airport or Hongqiao International Airport. It’s best to check which airport is closest to your hotel or place of stay before choosing a flight, or you might end up with an additional hour of travel (at least!) upon arrival. Shanghai is a vast city—you can travel on public transportation for hours and still be within the city limits.
Pudong International Airport (PVG)
Both terminals in Pudong International Airport serve domestic flights. Terminal 1 is home to airlines including China Eastern Airlines and China Southern Airlines, while flights from China Southern Airlines, Suparna Airlines, and Spring Airlines generally land at Terminal 2.
Pudong International Airport is located 25 miles east of the city. Although it is well connected in terms of public transportation, if your destination is not located in Pudong New District, selecting Hongqiao International Airport will likely cut down on your travel time after arrival.
Hongqiao International Airport (SHA)
Hongqiao International Airport also has two terminals, both receiving flights from Sanya. Most domestic flights, including those operated by Juneyao Airlines, China Eastern Airlines, and Shanghai Airlines, land at Terminal 2. For flights from Sanya to Shanghai Hongqiao, only those operated by Spring Airlines arrive at Terminal 1.
It’s important to note that Terminals 1 & 2 of Hongqiao Airport are not connected and there is currently no way to transfer between the two terminals on foot. Visitors who need to transfer between terminals can take a shuttle bus which departs every half hour or ride line 10 of the metro for one station.
