People are packed tightly together, and if you're not by the window, you're essentially riding in an elevator without a view. Only the lucky few near the glass get a view. So if you want to look around, either snag a window seat or walk.
Day or evening? We went during the day—it was quiet, green, we strolled through the park, and then climbed the tower—everything was laid back. But our friends went in the evening and said it was much more beautiful in the evening—the city glowed, the lights, the colors, the atmosphere. The only downside is the line. It's huge. If you want to catch the sunset, add an extra hour just to get up.
The park and tower are iconic, and the views from there are truly worth it. But if you're not a fan of crowds and the crush of the funicular, go during the day. If you're willing to put up with the view, go in the evening, but with plenty of time.
We didn't regret going. But if we were to do it again, we'd probably choose the evening stroll.
