Date of stay 21/22nd September 2022…. Room 307. On first impressions nicely situated On approaching entrance dirty steps needs a good clean and the arms to velvet settees in reception shone with the dirt from hands. Booking in staff lovely BUT the lift was out of order and we were on third floor I have asthma my neighbour a walking problem ,we have a room with sea view, due to lift being out of order we were offered a 2nd floor room no view we took a look at room ,we declined due to smell in room so we struggle with original 3rd floor room, very large but unwelcoming.The view if we could have seen out of the window properly would have been nice also the window was nailed to the frame shut, No fire escape if needed then came the cobwebs not only in the corner of the ceiling but down the wall ,the wall lights were so dirty inside with dust it did not give the light it should have.head board thick with dust,bed side table thick dust on legs skirting board the same ,then came the shower mat you stand on for safety in the bath was so rank when I picked it up I drop it it was black with scum and black mould. I can’t even guess how long it’s been since it was cleaned. Obviously we called the manager ,he was very apologetic and offered another room, we had already seen another room and was not happy he offered to have our room cleaned while we were out which we agreed to unfortunately who ever he got to go to the room only changed the bath mat and sprayed what ever to make the room smell nice, but as I walked to the television I could see the cobwebs on the light still so again we checked and sure enough the room had not been cleaned, you cannot Blame the manager for this but the staff in housekeeping . The royal is a very prestigious building and is very lucrative for you business but you are letting the side down when you do not take care of the of its decor and clients, as we were not the only ones complaining in some bed rooms the plaster is coming off the wall through damp and smells ,the stairs and bannisters we filthy and I mean filthy,I would not be writing this review if I didn’t think I needed to ,Alex the manager was excellent ,but you won’t have him long if he has to put up with this many complaints, and on the good side, the bar and restaurant were good, again staff were great and we loved Anika who was in charge and she had time for the guests and their needs. The dining area would be at a loss with out her whilst in Whitby we got chatting with the locals and unfortunately the royal is know as a dive which is definitely not good for business. And on a closing point we were cheeky and worked how much you were making @£75 a person not a room a night so before this gold mind falls down around your ears do something get a cleaning team in there and do a deep clean and and builders to do repairs. Stay was for 2 nights in a double room in September and purchased with a Buy-a-Gift voucher for £130. No parking available but there is a public (pay and display) car park 150 metres away When we shown to our room we were told that there wasn't a toilet in the room but there was a shared one at the end of the corridor. We had not previously been informed of this. There was no food available for an evening meal despite it being only 5pm. No breakfast was available on either of the two mornings. No information was provided in the room regarding wi-fi or indeed anything else. There were no bedside lights and no wardrobe - just two hangers on a clothes rack. The water in the shower was dangerously hot because the taps were so difficult to turn and control. There were soap dribbles down the outer wall of the shower and the wall toothbrush holder was stained with old toothpaste and covered in dust. The old wooden sash window was wedged open with a wooden block, not sure why, because it was totally stuck anyway - it couldn't be moved either up or down. The totally frosted window obscured our fine view of the fire escape and back yard. Admittedly the days had been warm, but the room was unbearably hot at night because no air could get in. There was a huge cellar cooler outside the window which emitted a noise that sounded like a giant hairdryer that never turned off. Had we been cool enough to get to sleep, this noise would have kept us awake anyway. The upholstered chair in the room was a very worn and dirty affair that that had definitely seen better decades. We didn't sit on it to test its comfort. The room wasn't serviced before the second , (and thankfully last), evening and we had to go in search of a member of staff to give us a tea bag. On the positive side, the linen was clean and the bed comfortable..... Don't think we'll be coming back though!

Riviera was welcoming, clean, comfortable, with friendly, efficient and hardworking staff. Our room had a lovely view. Breakfast was delicious, with a great choice of options. A couple of things that needed attention were taken on board by staff when we mentioned them. Would be happy to visit Whitby and stay at Riviera again.

Was a birthday treat for my fella.. lovely relaxing time, staff really friendly and helpful, we stayed in the Marrakesh room, nice, and clean, bed comfortable and the spa Bath was enormous for 2.. recommended the badger pub for food was gorgeous and reasonably priced.. would return
