Grand Fiesta Americana Oaxaca

Oaxaca|1.23km from Plaza de la Danza
We stayed here for 1 night while in Oaxaca. This is a new property and it's nice. The room was quiet and comfortable. The building itself is neat - they created multiple interior courtyards so that all the rooms have windows. We had breakfast at the hotel and it was nice. I used the gym - it's small but has everything that's needed. This is a nice 4 star hotel. Some of the reviews talk about how nice it is...it is nice, but this is not a 5 star hotel, so definitely set your expectations on that, especially if you're used to 5 star properties. The only issue we had was w/ the concierge desk. We'd emailed about airport transport and they wrote back right away setting that up for us. When we wrote a second time about the botanical gardens, we received no response. Then, since we assumed the gardens were closed the day we were going to be there, we wrote to ask about a tour to Monte Alban. No response. I sent a follow up email and did not receive a response. So I called. The person I spoke with on the phone told me someone would call me back. I explained they could call or simply reply to my email. No one called or wrote so I went ahead and booked a tour w/ a provider I found on Trip Advisor. Upon arrival at the airpot, our driver told us asked us about our tour for that day. It turns out the concierge desk had booked us a tour but not bothered to tell us. This was so unfortunate because 1) I'd literally followed up twice trying to get a response and 2) we had to tell the tour company we were not available, which I felt really bad about. Anyhow, sorry to write too much about that experience but it was frustrating and something that could have been avoided with slightly better communication.

Pros: Spacious, central hostel with cheap beds. Friendly staff, nice patio with a nice view onto Monte Alban and the city, table tennis and fitness room available. Not a party hostel. Has a kitchen. Free water and coffee. Clean. Laundry around the corner. Cons: I wasn't explained anything during the checkin, the staff speak hardly English (some don't at all which I find an absolute no-go for the size of this hostel) and the new guy there was absolutely not knowledgable about a lot of things an employee there should know. Helpful though. The kitchen equipment was bad. There was always a lack of spoons and glasses/cups. Moreover, there were no designated areas for ”I'm leaving, take this stuff if you want to” and nobody put his name and departure date onto the stuff in the fridge. I recommended those things but it wasn't implemented (although a simple piece of cardboard would have done). The room was quiet only from ~23:30 to ~07:30. Some trucks and motorbikes were extremely loud. NO internet connection directly on my room 123, but there was enough space outside to sit where there is a connection. But even there, there was sometimes 10% packetloss and a ping of >200ms depending on how many people were using the internet. Well, overall a good experience but the hotel should definately improve on the kitchen situation.

Much of the description of this hotel on booking websites is FRAUDULENT. WHAT'S TRUE: The hotel is located close to the Zocalo. The rooftop terrace is lovely, although seating is limited -- only one lounge chair and 3 stools. They offer free bottled water, coffee, and cookies (cookies were awful). WiFi is good. They have free parking. You get a small private room with a private bath for the price of a hostel bed. WHAT'S FRAUDULENT: The hotel description lists family rooms, a TV lounge, restaurant, snack bar, beach umbrellas, board games, DVDs, puzzles, outdoor picnic area, concierge, tour desk, and English-speaking staff. They have NONE of these things. When I questioned the front desk staff about this and showed them the listing, they appeared surprised and said they didn't know why the description said that. The info about having a restaurant and snack bar has subsequently been removed (perhaps in response to my complaint?), but the other amenities are still listed even though they do not exist. The largest room is only 97 sq ft (9 sq meters) with 2 beds, hardly a ”family room.” The other rooms are 75 sq ft (7 sq meters) and 86 sq ft (8 sq meters). IMO none of these are ”spacious” or ”huge” even though a few reviewers have described them as such. Moreover, the rooms do not have a fan or air conditioner, even though it was 93 degrees outside (34C). There was a window in my room, but it didn't have a screen. I had to keep it open because with no fan or air conditioner, the room was suffocatingly hot. Mosquitos entered through the open window and bit me throughout the night. There was also a plastic mattress cover on the bed, which made it even hotter and more uncomfortable. To top it off, my room was on the ground floor, and a nearby bar blasted music until 2 AM. Between the heat, noise, plastic sheets, and mosquitos, I barely slept two hours. The entrance, lobby, and hallways of the hotel are dimly lit and uninviting. The room is dimly lit as well, with only a small round ceiling light, no bedside lamps. No TV either. Hot water in the showers is on a 10-minute timer, so plan accordingly. I had booked 4 nights, but immediately canceled 3 of them once I saw the hotel. If I hadn't been so exhausted from traveling all day, I wouldn't have stayed there at all. As it was, I checked out at 7:30 AM the next morning, never to return. I'm a budget traveler, so I'm used to cheap hotels. I wasn't expecting luxury. However, this was one of the most disappointing places I've ever stayed. If all you need is a place to shower and lay your head, you might like it here. Otherwise, I don't recommend it.

Great hotel! Nice rooms; nice restaurant; good location. We had a small suite which had a table and sofa, and spacious room… we used all of it. Our room opened to an inside patio so it was not as noisy. The atmosphere on its patio was relaxed and friendly (they have rescued birds there which I loved.) there are other outdoor sitting areas on the third floor… one is open to the city. Easy walking distance to all the sights.

This hotel is in the perfect location close to the historic center and a short walk into surrounding neighborhoods of Jalatlaco and Xochimilco. Lots of food and coffee around and quiet and safe at night. Service was great and they helped us with laundry and getting taxis. A/c and hot water was strong, rooms were clean and dark out curtains were perfect. We would recommend this hotel.

The location is very good in the city center, it is convenient to go anywhere, the hotel front desk is called a car. The accommodation fee does not include breakfast and will be charged separately. The room was quiet but not central air conditioning. Because there is a swimming pool, the hotel has mosquitoes, but also pay attention to anti-mosquito. I live on the second floor, the water in the bath is not very big, the WiFi quality is average and needs improvement.

The overall theme of the hotel is very minimal and designer made. The people working there are very welcoming. Although we had some ups and down regarding the water at some point, I would definitely come back.
