Hotel S. Gabriel

Very pleasant hotel. Welcoming staff: the breakfast staff as well as the front desk. The room was spacious and clean, loved their slim comforters/duvets, etxra covers in big closet, no safe in a room, but the hotel stores your luggage if you need to check out but want to explore. Hotel locks the main door all the time, which can be cumbersome if you always go in and out, but it does provide safety as random people would not be able to enter. We had a large window into the breakfast courtyard which was lovely. Small wall tv with many English channels. The bathroom was nice with shampoo and soap. Good water pressure, the only concern in our room - water was draining slower than pressure in shower head. So we had to turn the water off, lather, allow for water to drain a bit and turn on the shower again, otherwise we would have flooded the bathroom floor within minutes not crazy annoying but something to be aware off. We got lucky and the hallways and in general was quite at late hours. Hotel felt safe. Breakfast is not the biggest but you will not leave hungry. We asked the kitchen for a kettle and they were able to locate one which was incredible. We enjoyed our stay, this is a 2 star hotel with a fair price so one should expect a few imperfections. The beds were fine, no issues. There is a main shopping street on the next block, landromat on the same street a few doors down. There are supermarkets and stores through out with very cheap but tasty desserts. Our favorite was Pingo Doce which is a lighter version of Eately style store/cafeteria. It's about 5-7 min walk from hotel on your way from center, entrance is on Rua de Passos Manuel and exits right on the street of the hotel (Rua da Alegria). Has the best variety/selection from surrounding shops, cheapest from what we have seen: food, and Portugal chocolates as souvenirs (chocolate here ~€0.80-€3, in airport €10 can make a dent if you have a big crowd to shop for).

The best is its location just a few meters from the church of San Ildefonso, very close to the station São Bento, Rua Santa Catarina, Avenue Aliados and Bolhão market, really for a short visit is perfect because you come to all the points of interest in The hotel is close to the Santiago Café with the best French girls. As regards the hotel facilities, it enters stairs, has no lift so there is no accessibility for people with reduced mobility, and the entry card is deleted, so it is expensive to be located, the staff's attention is good; We were given a double bed + single bed, we saw there were others better but for the price we paid we didn't complain; the bathroom is small and the laundry is out of the bathroom, this was practical, it is a hotel to go to sleep and now. How positive, they have extra beds and as negative, the walls were screwed by the baggage year and did not paint it in good time, making it look dirty, but the room, The hotel was very comfortable and the hotel was very comfortable.

We stayed on the first day of our trip to Portugal. Ideal location, 10-15 minutes walk to the historic center. The car was parked in a covered parking 100 meters away on a nearby street, they paid 10 euros per day. We had breakfast 40 meters from the hotel, Cafe Dragao. The apartments are very clean, you can hear some noise from the street (we lived in the very first room and the windows overlooked the roadway). I liked everything, clear instructions for check-in and check-out. Taxi from the center - 3-4 euros.

Our party of 10 just returned from a wonderful 3 night stay at the hotel. We'd originally booked for October 2020 but they were happy to defer the booking and keep the same price. The hotel is well located, very comfortable and provided a good breakfast, not to mention the glass of port on arrival. As mentioned by others the staff were extremely helpful. They recommended and booked some local restaurants which were terrific. We're already talking about making a return trip.

We had some initial issues with this hotel but ended up quite liking it, mainly for the area. Our first room had a broken toilet seat, no towels and a torn sofa cover. Full marks for the way reception staff dealt with our concerns though. They changed our room and it was fine. This is a very basic hotel - no extras, one towel each (changed daily). But it’s not too expensive, beds are comfy and it’s in a good local neighbourhood. Breakfast is very acceptable. Try the little Murca restaurant across the street. Rua San Catarina (one of the best shopping areas in Porto) is almost around the corner. There is a laundromat (Marlin Wash) 350m away and many restaurants, bars and cafes nearby. And no homeless people hanging around as some old reviews say.
