The rundown hotel with a surly host made the start of the Camino Frances walk less than spectacular. We had a bath with no hot water and smell of sewage all night. No top sheet was on the well worn bedding and there was no air conditioning. The rudeness of the reception was the topper of a bad experience.

I booked 3xTwin rooms and paid 100€ deposit on 9th February and received a receipt a few days later confirming the booking. We were five motorcyclists hoping to enjoy the roads of the Pyrenees. On arrival and parking our motorcycles at the back of the hotel we were immediately told from a window that we couldn’t park there – charming, but OK, we moved them. The manager then came out and told us that the hotel was full and he only had two rooms for us. One was three-bedded (a double bed and a single – we’re five males requiring single beds!) the other was a garret room without full facilities. WHAT! We had travelled nearly 600 kms and were looking forward to our two-night stay. The manager shrugged his shoulders and told us that WE had a problem, we advised politely him that NO, he had a problem! We showed him the printed details of our confirmed booking and deposit receipt. After we threatened to call the tourist police he eventually but reluctantly arranged for a room in accommodation a short drive away. I cannot emphasise how disappointed we were with this hotel and the manager’s attitude. His egregious avarice showed no regard for his confirmed guests. Incidentally, the photo of the hotel disguises the busy main road at the front carrying heavy traffic to/from Pamplona. Never again

What a wonderful place to call home for five days as I start my Camino. The owners are friendly and welcoming. They were always around and always ready to help in any way they can. The hotel is just off the main road right in the centre of town and steps to everything you need to start your Camino. I would not hesitate to stay here again if I’m am back In SJPDP.

I was worried after reading mixed reviews but the hotel was quite ok. The host was - well fine. He was friendly enough but ‘different’ and some people would take it as poor but he was helpful and quite friendly. Carried bags up stairs for us all. Rooms are basic with no a/c but comfortable enough. Breakfast was average but if you wanted hit or cold milk etc he would get it for you. The only concern was the flies around the food. We had a family tragedy while there with our daughter’s husband dying back home in Australia so we had to cut our Camino walk off on first day. Our host was helpful in dealing with the situation and our daughter’s frail mental state. He showed care and sympathy and did what he could to assist us All in all a quite pleasant stay. Narrow stairs up to rooms.

The stay - or should I say non-stay - was a total disaster. I made a reservation in late February for two nights for two rooms. We are walking the Camino with another couple and knew St Jean would be super busy. I had full documentation of our reservation via email printed out. When we arrived to check in, we were told “the hotel has changed ownership and we are booked solid, no room is available.” We were never informed. When we asked the new owner/manager if he at least he had any suggestions of where we might find a room on short notice, he shrugged and basically said, “that’s your problem.” We had to scramble and eventually found rooms for each night, but we had to go as far as Burguete, Spain, a 45 minute drive away to get lodging. We are 65 and have never encountered such a rude proprietor in 40+ years of active travel. A complete ****. I have never had to write a review like this before! I spoke with him twice so he had more than one chance to at least acknowledge our predicament. Awful.

No complaints but also no sense of "isn't this cool". staff is friendly. Room is very basic but there's good hot water. I was in front with a noisy road but it quieted at night and was better with my window closed. I am early on my hike along the Camino DeSantiago so I don't really have much to compare, but I found the breakfast a little disappointing. What looked like American cheese, Scant breakfast meat, and bread and baguette. Cereal, banana, yogurt. boiled egg or other source of protein and choice of fruit would be nice. Good coffee.

The issue with Hotel des Remparts is that we were double charged for our stay and the hotel refused to correct the issue. In other words, the owners plainly decided to steal our hard earn money. We made a booking through ******* and prepaid the hotel stay. At checkout, one of the hotel employees forced us to pay again claiming they had not received the payment from the travel agency. We provided the receipts and email confirmations from ******* showing the payment was made. They refused to honor it and forced to pay again. Since we were tourist in a foreign country and we were ready to start our hike for the Camino of Santiago we figured we had not choice but to pay and try resolve the issue once returning home. Once we did, we promptly reached out to the owners of the hotels via email. We received a rude reply from Janis and once again the owners continue to refuse to resolve the issue and refund the double payment. We made multiple prepaid reservations for our dream trip throughout the Camino de Santiago using ******* and we didn't have any issues with any other hotels and reservation. It was only Hotel des Remparts that took our money twice and refused to do anything about it. A sour stay in an otherwise great trip throughout France and Spain.

It’s a SHAME… the hotel is in a deplorable state… in its original state for several decades!!! Hygiene is more than limited... The state of the bathroom worthy of a bad film!!! The shower only works partially, the joints are black, the carpet in the shower has not been cleaned since...??? Also, the room is not made every day? And we are not informed about it!!! Access to the hotel is after 8 p.m. via the garbage yard!!!! What can we say about the mediocrity of the breakfast where all the products are more than ordinary... the ham is full of fat, the cheese comes from a bad supermarket booster! As for the reception, it is non-existent!!! All for the modest sum of €100 per night!!!! It’s shameful and so unfair for the hoteliers who go out of their way… REALLY RUN away, there are plenty of establishments in St Jean that are much better than this one!!!

Warm welcome, knowledgeable staff. The rooms are clean, the bedding is good. A small fan is missing in case of high heat, as the room is not air-conditioned. The breakfast is ok with fruit, cold meats, pastries etc... Located near the village center. Good value for money.
