It was on the staircase to our room that the girl at The Gillygate informed us they had a late licence until 1am. We’d just paid for three nights - one night was all we could cope with. At 1.45am the music was still blaring through the floor from the pub below. We could hear people’s voices chatting and laughing. At 2am I’d booked another hotel. In more than 30 years travelling as an adult, I’ve never had to do that before! The room was unwelcoming, tired and the bathroom was particularly in poor condition. Good points - the bed was comfortable and the shower powerful… but don’t let that those elements encourage you to book! We moved to the Minster Hotel around the corner - so much nicer for a similar price!

Booked for three nights , we stayed in one of the outside rooms. On arrival room had not been cleaned from last guest so we went off for a couple of hours. On our return the bed had been made up but nothing else . Floor was messy with leaves and mud bathroom hadn't been cleaned. Complained at the bar, young girl arrived with hoover said didn't know they had one as other one was broken. I had to ask her to hoover bathroom. The shower curtain was disgusting, dirty shower floor and on outside of shower base and we were unsure of what the brown mark was on the door frame !? She said she hadn't had time to do the shower!!! This room wasn't cheap! The bathroom sink was tiny couldn't fill small kettle under tap and there was NO running hot water. The loo roll holder was hanging by a thread. The radiator was only hot at the bottom so approximately 75% was tepid. It was -4 outside?? There's an open fireplace in the corner by the bed and the cold air coming down that was awful. We put our cases in front to try to lessen it. No toiletries provided, we had to ask for loo rolls and the room wasn't serviced during our stay, as much as It was promised by the manager after the bar staff called her re our complaints. Huge health and safety issues in that the notice on the back of our door re emergencies, the managers contact number has two digits missing!!! So if you need anyone in an emergency you're on your own as the pubs not manned overnight. Final straw on our last night the heating went off so you can imagine how cold it was . I called the contact number the bar staff had given me for the manager the previous day as I was still unhappy, left three messages re the heating but she never replied. My friend called her approx two hours later she replied saying she would get back to us- she never did. On handing our keys in to the bar staff we were told we were the 5th room with no heating !!! We obtained a part refund for our experience. There is no breakfast provided as advertised. I don't know what the internal rooms are like I can only imagine they're the same. It's a shame as the pub in situated in a great place to explore York. Would I return definitely not.

Appalling . Booked with *********** paid £265 for 1 night for a family room it was awful I have listed the complaints I sent in an email and I’m still awaiting a response. Please be very aware when booking here. Good morning. I wish to request a refund please we paid £265 for a very poor room at the Gillygate bar and rooms. Iam disabled I have a terminal brain tumour and me and my daughters were away to make special memories. Your sub standard accommodation absolutely spoilt this for us. 1. We arrived and you didn’t even have any record of our booking but fortunately you did have a family room available. (Apparently this happens a lot) 2. The booking states coffee making facilities with Starbucks coffee this was not the case it was unbranded rubbish. 3. There was a keyboard player playing and singing until 12 am and then another hour of karaoke it was hell. I tried to ring the reception number on 2 occasions without any answer. We got about 5 hours sleep. 4. The thin quilts were completely inadequate we were freezing in the night but nobody was about to help us get extra bedding. 4. There was no heating on in the morning we were dithering. 5. The shower was only working on cold as I’m unable to get into a bath due to my disabilities. 6. Your electric PAT had run out on the appliances 2 months ago and the amount of Limescale on the inside and outside of the kettle has obviously been building up for years… god help you if anything should cause somebody a shock or even death . 7. The booking states that breakfast is available at £11.95 per head but you don’t even have a functioning kitchen. 8. There were no staff available to help us with our queries until we were checking out and we complained to Kayne who agreed with all our complaints. 9. There was no disabled access I had to climb a set of stairs. 10. It said slippers were provided, the only slippers available were my own. Over a week ago now and still no reply I have sent a copy of this email to ***********

I booked a room for one night and when I asked about breakfast the girl at the bar told me they didn't offer one even though it was advertised The room in the courtyard was basic with no toiletries but it was warm.No wifi in the room.I don't think I'd stay here again.

There is nothing on the website that tells you that this bar has a 1:30 am license. They take full advantage of this with loud music and then karaoke most nights. If you are given a room above the bar, then do not expect to get much sleep. The security is not existent, on checking you are given a key to the room which has key codes for the back door and the door at the bottom of the stairs. However, these doors are never locked so anyone can have full access to the rooms which could then be easily broken into if so wished. The advertised high speed Wi-Fi does not extend the rooms so we managed to use most of our monthly data up in our four night stay. There is no separate fire exit, and the staff store used laundry at the bottom of the stairs, just inside the back door where people stand to smoke. an obvious fire hazard if ever I saw one. Our room was warm and comfortable, but in need of a little TLC. The bathroom needs some maintenance and the guest information booklet needs updating. It would also be nice to have a hairdryer and some drinking glasses.
