My cross-country drive here turned out to be the most breathtaking segment of my entire Tibet journey. I want to share a vivid real travel story that made this place unforgettable. I was nervous before driving the famous Nujiang 72 Turns, known as China’s most thrilling mountain road. I expected a rough, stressful drive with nothing but dangerous bends. Halfway down the zigzagging road, I decided to stop at a small roadside viewpoint to catch my breath. While resting, I witnessed an incredible layered landscape I’d never seen before. Rolling green alpine meadows sat above, steep rocky gorges stretched below, and the roaring Nu River glinted like silver at the valley bottom under the clear blue sky. I stayed in Basu for two full days to explore its hidden gems. I visited Ranwu Lake, often called the “fairyland of eastern Tibet”. Its crystal blue glacial water is surrounded by snow-capped peaks, with mirror-like reflections that look surreal and untouched. I also wandered quiet Tibetan villages and vast highland pastures, where yaks graze freely and pure wind blows across the endless wilderness. Every view here is raw, grand, and completely unfiltered. The rain stopped in the early morning. Pushing open the wooden window of the inn, a cool breeze hit my face—not the kind of bone-chilling cold, but a fresh, moist chill carrying the scent of earth and pine needles, like biting into a green apple just taken out of the fridge. Ranwu Lake lay outside in the morning light, still not fully awake. The water surface was unbelievably calm. The rain had washed everything clean—the distant snow-capped mountains looked whiter, the nearby coniferous forest greener, and even the sky had changed from gray to a soft blue. A thin layer of mist floated on the lake, moving slowly along the water’s surface, as if someone was gently lifting a blanket. I walked to the lakeshore, and the water droplets on the grass wet the tips of my shoes. The lake water was milky green; after the rain, Ranwu Lake was clearer than usual, allowing me to see stones several meters deep beneath the surface. A few wild ducks swam over from the opposite shore, trailing long V-shaped ripples that shattered the reflection of the snow mountains, then pieced it back together. I crouched down to look at a blade of grass. Five or six water droplets hung on the leaf, each round and transparent like tiny lenses. Looking closer—the droplets reflected the snow mountain, complete, small, and edged with gold. I reached out and gently touched the leaf. The droplets rolled off, falling into a puddle with a soft “tap.” Standing up, I walked along the lakeside for a while. The air carried a unique sweetness after the rain, a mix of pine resin and wet earth. Taking a deep breath, the coolness reached my lungs, opening all my pores. In the distance, the Laigu Glacier shimmered blue through gaps in the clouds; they say that blue is the color formed after millions of years of ice compression. Back at the inn, the landlady was hanging sheets in the yard. The white sheets billowed in the breeze like sails. “The weather is good today,” she smiled, “you can see the whole snow mountain.” I held a cup of butter tea and sat under the porch. The salty aroma of the hot tea mixed with the fresh post-rain air, creating an indescribable comfort. The thin mist on the lake was dissipating, and the snow mountain gradually revealed its full form. No need to visit any tourist spots. Continuing our road trip along National Highway 318, the gorgeous scenery just never ends! 🚗💨 Leaving Zuogong and heading into Bangda Town, our first stop was the absolutely mesmerizing Bangda Grassland (G214 Xijing Line, Basu County, Tibet Autonomous Region). Look up and you'll see blue skies, fluffy white clouds, endless meadows, and serene green waters—the views are literally crying-level beautiful! 🌱☁️ Cruising slowly past Bangda Grassland, we hit the iconic Nu River 72 Turns (50 meters south of G318, Basu County, Qamdo City). With a massive 2,000-meter drop and endless S-curve switchbacks, it looks intimidating but is actually a pretty smooth drive. Once you conquer the turns, you feel totally refreshed 😌~ "72 Turns for the brave; once you conquer them, the rest of your life is a smooth ride!" 🚗🌀 Next up was the Nu River Bridge (Basu County, Qamdo City, Tibet Autonomous Region), where we paid tribute to the martyrs who gave their lives to liberate Tibet 🙏. My heart is full of respect. Pushing through for another two hours brought us to the absolute highlight of the trip: Ranwu Town. The scenery at Ranwu Lake (southwest corner of Ranwu Township, Basu County, Qamdo City, Tibet Autonomous Region) is straight-up breathtaking. I lucked out and caught a rainbow this time, which definitely leveled up my photo game! 🌈📸 Tonight, I'm staying at the Phuntsok Kangsang Basu Ranwu Lake Oxygen Hotel (No. 46, 2nd Ring Road, Ranwu Town), and I honestly highly recommend it! The hotel is right next to the lake with super convenient parking 🚙. You seriously don’t need to worry about altitude sickness here. In March 2025, I was fortunate enough to embark on a self-guided trip, flying from Shanghai to Lijiang and traveling along the G318 from Lijiang to Lhasa. At Laigu Glacier in Qamdo, I touched the deep blue, thousand-year-old ice with my own hands. That was also the last year tourists were allowed on the ice; signs of the glacier melting were visible everywhere, and warning fences were set up all around. In 2026, Laigu Glacier was completely closed off, and tourists have been prohibited from stepping on the ice ever since. Many magnificent landscapes are disappearing at a speed visible to the naked eye. We have seen them, and we are witnessing their changes. From Kunming to Liuku, then northward along the Nujiang Valley, the road winds deep into the mountains before entering the legendary Bingchacha route. More than 4,000 kilometres of driving through some of the most rugged landscapes in southwestern China — over mountain passes, across great rivers, through clouds and mist, and finally towards Motuo. The scenery changes with every turn. The First Bend of the Nujiang River opens like a vast natural painting. At Nujiang Great Landslide, the mountains seem to descend directly into the valley. In Dala Village, Bingzhongluo, an elderly Dulong woman carries the memory of a vanishing tradition. At Wuli Village, mist softens the mountains into layers of ink. Beyond them rise Miyou Snow Mountain and the immense Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon, where the river makes its dramatic turn at Guoguo Pond. And then there is Motuo — glimpsed from above through the clouds, almost unreal, like a mirage hidden at the end of the road. Along the way, the great rivers become companions: the Nujiang, Dulong, Lancang, Jinsha and Yarlung Tsangpo. The mountains remain constant, yet no two bends look alike.
