#easytravelpost Gunung Lawu (3,265 m) sits on the Central–East Java border; the Cemoro Sewu trailhead is the steeper, quieter western-slope start at ~1,900 m, reached from Tawangmangu (Karanganyar) or Sarangan (Magetan). From Solo's Tirtonadi terminal, bus to Tawangmangu (2–3 hrs, ~25,000 IDR), then ojek to Cemoro Sewu (30–45 min, 40k–60k IDR). Entrance/registration Rp 15,000–20,000 at the kiosk, cash, register your name + exit time — rangers do evening sweeps. I slept in Tawangmangu (120k IDR losmen), ojek'd to Cemoro Sewu at 04:50, registered by 05:20, and climbed. The moss hero is the 1,900–2,500 m pine belt: Pinus merkusii with Thuidium and Aerobryopsis on the needle-duff buttresses 2 cm thick, 9°C pre-dawn, a Sunda thrush, the pine trunks ghosting out of cloud at first light. Above 2,500 m the pines thin to Cassinia scrub and the moss becomes Racomitrium on the grassy plateau — I reached Pos 3 (Sendang Drajat spring) at 06:40, the moss on the spring-box stones silver with drip, ate a packed 10k IDR nasi bungkus from Tawangmangu, watched the sun burn the sea-of-clouds below Sarangan lake. Mistake: I did Cemoro Sewu as a same-day sunrise push from Solo — 04:50 start meant 02:00 leave Solo, fell asleep on the bus; sleep in Tawangmangu, start 04:30 local. Another: the Cemoro Sewu route is steeper than Cemoro Kandang — 5 posts, 7 hrs to summit; first-timers underestimate the pine-band mud after rain. Would you bus 25k + ojek 50k + entry 20k for the Cemoro Sewu mossy pine-forest dawn climb to Pos 3, or take the gentler Cemoro Kandang route and trade the pine gloom for longer grassland?

The "wildest route" in Eastern Tibetan Sichuan, from Chengdu to Lhasa, lets you experience the breathtaking snow mountains, sacred lakes, forest seas, and sky roads all in one trip. This is the ultimate joy of self-driving! ✨ Key Highlights of the Route 1. Yala Snow Mountain: A sacred mountain you encounter just after leaving Danba. The snow-capped peak framed by grasslands and Tibetan villages looks like a painting, and every snapshot is wallpaper-worthy. 2. Sister Lakes: On the road from Litang to Mangkam, two azure lakes nestle at the foot of the snow mountains, serene and sacred. Stopping to feel the breeze is truly healing. 3. Dongda Mountain + Seventy-Two Bends: Iconic sections of the Sichuan-Tibet Highway. The high-altitude sea of clouds at Dongda Mountain and the thrilling switchbacks of the Seventy-Two Bends maximize the excitement of self-driving. 4. Ranwu Lake + Lhag Glacier: The lake’s water is as blue as a gem, surrounded by snow mountains and glaciers. Driving along the lakeshore feels like entering a fairy tale world. 5. Namcha Barwa Peak: On the way from Lulang to Nyingchi, this is known as "China’s most beautiful snow mountain." Seeing its full view is definitely the luckiest moment of the trip. 6. Yamdrok Lake: Near Lhasa, this lake’s water shows distinct layers of blue. Every frame while driving around the lake is a visual feast. 7. Nyingchi Peach Blossom Valley: From March to April, peach blossoms bloom wildly at the foot of the snow mountains, allowing you to enjoy peach blossoms and snow mountains at the same time. 🚗 Self-Driving Tips ▫️ Some road sections are complex; it’s recommended to drive a rugged off-road vehicle and prepare snow chains and a spare tire. ▫️ Be mindful of altitude sickness in high-altitude areas; bring oxygen tanks and common medications in advance. ▫️ Supply points are far apart along the way; keep your fuel tank above half and carry some snacks and water with you.

#bucketlistdestinations Mangkang, the vital border county where Sichuan, Yunnan and Xizang meet, has officially secured its permanent spot on my travel bucket list. As the first gateway into Xizang along G318 and G214 highways, it is far more than a transit stop. It blends stunning river valley landscapes, snow-capped peaks, and millennium-old intangible cultural heritage, offering an authentic Xizang travel experience unlike any crowded scenic spot. I want to share a touching and eye-opening travel story from my visit. I only planned a one-hour quick stop to photograph the ancient salt fields before continuing my road trip. While wandering along the Lancang River banks, I met an elderly local salt worker who has stuck to traditional salt-making for over fifty years. She kindly showed me how they draw brine from ancient wells, spread it on layered salt fields, and let wind and sunlight crystallize natural salt. I was shocked to learn this pure handmade craft has lasted for more than 1,300 years since the Tubo period. I stayed much longer than planned, watching her quiet, repetitive work under the sun. The riverbank salt fields present a magical dual-color view: soft red salt on one side and snowy white salt on the other, forming a natural palette crafted purely by nature and human perseverance. This is exactly why Mangkang deserves bucket-list status. It perfectly combines breathtaking wild nature and living ancient culture. Beyond the iconic salt fields, it features grand snow-capped mountain ranges, lush highland valleys, and primitive ecological reserves home to rare wildlife. Unlike overly commercialized tourist towns, Mangkang retains original, unpolished local customs and slow-paced highland life. Every corner here tells a story of time and inheritance. It is not just a scenic destination, but a cultural journey that lets travelers touch the ancient charm of the Tea Horse Road. It rewards patient travelers who are willing to slow down and listen to local stories. Let’s chat! Do you prefer iconic popular landmarks or underrated cultural ancient towns? Would you pause your road trip schedule for authentic local experiences? What cultural bucket-list spot surprises you the most? Drop your travel thoughts and tips below!

Mangkam Songtsen Rumai Resort is located in Mangkam County, Qamdo City, Tibet Autonomous Region. The guest rooms are very large and comfortable, the public areas are also much larger, and most importantly, the surrounding environment is very good, facing the Lancang River. The price-performance ratio for a house price of around 1,000 is still acceptable. If I have the chance, I will still deliberately stay here. However, if the housing prices soar like a runaway horse in the future, I will definitely pass by it. After all, this is all there is to see here. In addition, the size of the public area is relative. If the hotel is fully occupied, the experience will be greatly reduced. After all, although it is priced at a 5-star hotel, the actual public area cannot be compared with that of a chain 5-star hotel. #ChinaTravel #Lancang River #Riverview #Tibet #Chamdo #Hotel #Cost-EffectiveHotel #HotelIntroduction #HotelRecommendation #HotelExperienceOfficer #HotelAccommodation

Driving the 214 from Yunnan into Tibet, you reach Quzika after crossing Hongla Mountain. I originally planned to push straight through to Markam County, but a friend convinced me to stop here for the night—it turned out to be the most comfortable night of the entire Yunnan-Tibet route. Yunqu Manor Hotel🍷 📍Location: Quzika Township, Markam County, Qamdo, Tibet. Located off National Highway 214. 🏔️Altitude: 2,200 meters!! With a dry, hot valley climate, you won't have to worry about altitude sickness on your first night in Tibet. 🔥Why do I highly recommend it? 1. Altitude-friendly, zero pressure for your first night in Tibet😌 An altitude of 2,200 meters is basically "plain-level" treatment in the Tibetan region. Just coming up from Yunnan, your body is still adjusting. Staying here is much more comfortable than going straight to Markam County at 3,800 meters. You need a good night's sleep to have the energy to cross the mountains later. 2. Natural hot springs to melt away fatigue♨️ The hotel features Quzika's natural hot springs, with dozens of indoor and outdoor pools spread along the valley. After a day of driving on winding mountain roads, soaking your sore legs in the hot springs at night wipes away all your fatigue—it works better than any massage. 3. Unique highland red wine🍷 Affiliated with the Quzika 1865 Winery, you can taste organic highland wine right in the lobby. After soaking in the hot springs, take a glass of red wine back to your room and enjoy a light buzz in the Tibetan valley. You really won't find this experience anywhere else. 4. Lancang River Canyon views from your window🌊 Backed by Dameiyong Snow Mountain and facing the great bend of the Lancang River. Wake up to the birds in the canyon in the morning, and when you open the window, the clouds and mist are slowly rising from the river—it's worth the price of the room alone. 📌Practical tips · Self-driving: About 2.5 hours from Feilai Temple, with good road conditions. · Suitable for: A first stop for rest on the Yunnan-Tibet route, self-driving enthusiasts, and those worried about altitude sickness. · Must-do experiences: Night soak in the hot springs + wine tasting at the winery + canyon morning mist. · Dining: The hotel has a restaurant that serves both Tibetan and Sichuan cuisine, so you don't need to worry about meals. For friends traveling the Yunnan-Tibet route, don't push yourself to reach Markam County on the first night. Stop in Quzika and soak in the hot springs—this is the right way to start a comfortable trip to Tibet🌙

If you're driving, you can park directly in the homestay's free parking lot. Your car will be parked safely, so you don't need to worry about parking. The "three-piece set" of whole-house oxygen enrichment, floor heating, and a humidifier is crucial for those preparing for a long journey into Tibet. It helps you get your body into the best shape while in Shangri-La, avoiding the discomfort of altitude sickness right after entering Tibet. The homestay has an elevator, making it easy to move your luggage. The rooms are spacious and feature giant screen projectors, perfect for resting and relaxing after a long day. The housekeeper is very knowledgeable about the Tibetan region and can provide tips on niche spots and gas/supply stops along the G349. Drive all the way down to Ranwu Lake, where the blue water is healing. Take a walk by the lake and clear your mind. ✅D5 Ranwu → Bome Travel through primeval forests accompanied by glacial streams. Bome has a low altitude and plenty of oxygen, so get some good rest. ✅D6 Bome → Nyingchi Tongmai, Sejila Mountain, and a view of Namcha Barwa Peak in the distance. Nyingchi is known as the Little Jiangnan of Tibet and is full of greenery. ✅D7 Nyingchi → Lhasa Take the Linla Expressway directly to easily arrive at the holy city of Lhasa! 💡Self-driving tips ▪️ Family cars/SUVs are both fine. Watch out for falling rocks during the rainy season and try to avoid driving at night. ▪️ Adapt to the altitude gradually. Avoid showering or washing your hair for the first few nights to prevent colds. ▪️ Refuel when the tank is half full; gas stations in the Tibetan region are far apart. ▪️ Respect local Tibetan customs and take your trash with you.

In early August 2026, I traveled to Tibet with my family via the Yunnan-Tibet Highway. There were 4 of us, and the total cost was about CNY 320 per person. We focused on the niche, authentic experience of Markam Yanjing, avoiding rushed itineraries and tourist traps, and immersing ourselves in the primitive charm of the 1,300-year-old ancient salt fields along the Lancang River. This entire guide is based on my personal experience, packed with practical tips, and perfect for beginners to follow directly. Detailed itinerary [Yanjing Ancient Salt Fields, Jiada Village, Naxi Ethnic Township, Markam County, Qamdo City, Tibet] 9:00 AM–12:00 PM Transportation: If driving, take the G214 National Highway north from Deqin, Yunnan, for about 2–3 hours. Set your navigation to "Markam Yanjing Ancient Salt Fields." If not driving, you can take a van from Markam County to Yanjing Township for about CNY 30–40 per person; the trip takes 2 hours. Admission ticket: CNY 90/person. It may be free during the off-season; please check the official attraction channels for the latest information on the day of your visit. Purchase tickets through official channels. Activities: August is when the Lancang River has the most water, creating a powerful, muddy yellow torrent that contrasts sharply with the red and white salt fields on both banks. The morning light from the east is perfect for photographing the panoramic view of the salt fields on the west bank. You can watch up close as salt workers extract brine from the wells, channel it into the fields, and dry it naturally—this is the only living heritage site in the world that preserves the original manual salt-making technique. The east bank produces red salt, and the west bank produces white salt; it is worth observing the difference in color across the same river. Tips: August is the rainy season, and thunderstorms are common in the mountains in the afternoon, so it is recommended to arrive as early as possible in the morning. Plan for 2–3 hours. The salt field area has slippery, rocky ground, so be sure to wear non-slip, flat shoes. The altitude of Yanjing is about 2,300–2,500 meters; you generally won't experience significant altitude sickness, but you should still avoid strenuous running or jumping. [Yanjing Catholic Church, Shangyanjing Village, Naxi Ethnic Township, Markam County, Qamdo City, Tibet] 2:00 PM–3:30 PM Transportation: It is about a 10-minute drive from Jiada Village. The church is located right next to the G214 National Highway; set your navigation to "Yanjing Catholic Church" to go directly there. Activities: This is the only Catholic church in Tibet, founded by French missionaries in 1865, with a history of over 160 years. The church architecture blends Tibetan and Western styles, and the interior is quiet and solemn. Residents of Shangyanjing Village are mostly Catholic, while those in Xiayanjing Village are mostly Tibetan Buddhist. The cultural phenomenon of two faiths coexisting across a single gully is very unique. A 40-minute visit is sufficient. Tips: Please keep quiet inside the church and respect local religious customs. In August, the afternoon light is from the west, making it slightly backlit for photos of the church facade. It is recommended to visit here in the morning on your way, and return to the salt fields in the afternoon for more photos. [Lancang River Salt Field Trail, Naxi Ethnic Township, Markam County, Qamdo City, Tibet] 5:30 PM–7:00 PM Highlights: In the evening, the light turns into a soft golden hue, making it the best time to photograph the "palette" effect of the salt fields. Stroll slowly along the dirt road by the Lancang River, with ocher-red sandy soil underfoot and layers of wooden salt racks in the distance, while the river breeze carries a faint salty scent. It is not too sunny in the evening, making it comfortable for walking slowly with children. Tips: Some sections of the trail have no railings. If you have children with you, be sure to hold their hands and stay away from the steep slopes by the river. Return to your accommodation before dark; there are no streetlights in the mountains at night, so night travel is not recommended. Local food recommendations 1. [Yanjing Jiajia Noodles] Full address: "Guolacong Tibetan Homestay," next to the Yunnan-Tibet Highway, Naxi Ethnic Township, Markam County, Qamdo City, Tibet. Average cost: CNY 25–35/person. Must-order signature dish: Jiajia noodles (served with Tibetan pig bone broth, cold dishes, and highland barley wine). Real review: Each bowl of noodles contains only five or six strands, made with alkaline water from oak tree ash, making them chewy and springy. The broth is simmered for over 12 hours with Tibetan pig bones and Yanjing well salt, resulting in a rich, savory flavor. The way to eat them is to use stones to keep count, and the server keeps adding noodles; the record is 147 bowls. It is a great experience for children and suitable for all ages. Pitfall: The noodle soup is a bit salty; if you prefer a lighter taste, you can ask the restaurant to use less salt in advance. 2. [Butter tea with tsampa] Full address: Available at all Tibetan restaurants in Yanjing Town, or at small street-side eateries in Naxi Ethnic Township. Average cost: CNY 15–20/person. Must-order signature dishes: Butter tea, tsampa. Real review: The butter tea made with local Yanjing white salt has a savory, fragrant taste with a hint of sweetness in the aftertaste, a completely different flavor from the iodized salt in supermarkets. Eating tsampa with butter tea by kneading it into balls is very filling, perfect for a snack before heading out in the morning. It is well-suited for the rainy season in August—the hot tea warms you up, and it is very cost-effective. Practical travel guide Transportation guide: The entire route follows the official G214 National Highway, and driving is the preferred method. It takes about 2–3 hours to reach Yanjing from Deqin, and about 2–3 hours from Batang via G318 and then G214. There are vans from Markam County to Yanjing Township for about CNY 30–40/person, but the schedule is not fixed, so it is recommended to ask about departure times in advance. Avoid all unlicensed vehicles and private charters. Accommodation recommendations: It is recommended to stay in the Jiada Village area of Naxi Ethnic Township, within walking distance of the salt field attraction. Lazangkang Yanjing Homestay is located in Jiada Village, just 583 meters from the salt field attraction; the owner provides explanations of the attraction, and the rooms are clean and cost-effective. Ca'yu Homestay is about a 100-meter walk from the salt field attraction; it is at a low altitude and suitable for families. Real pitfall avoidance guide: August is the peak of the rainy season in Qamdo, and the probability of rockfalls and landslides along the G318/G214 sections in Markam increases significantly. Be sure to check the road conditions for the day before departure and leave flexible time. There may be locals setting up booths at the entrance of the Yanjing attraction to collect fees; be sure to purchase tickets through official attraction channels and look for the authorized ticket office. Do not buy overpriced salt products at the entrance of the attraction; if you need to buy salt, you can buy it directly from the salt workers in the village. Avoid weekends and holiday peaks; the experience is more relaxed on weekdays. Essential items: In August, the temperature in Yanjing is about 5–22°C, with a large temperature difference between day and night. Essential items include a thin down jacket or fleece jacket, sunscreen, sunglasses, lip balm, non-slip flat shoes, a power bank, and a portable water bottle. During the rainy season, it is recommended to bring a lightweight raincoat, which is more practical than an umbrella. This trip to Yanjing in early August was relaxing and healing, with a slow pace, niche and uncrowded spots, delicious food without pitfalls, and great value for money. It is very suitable for families and self-driving tourists on the Yunnan-Tibet Highway as a first stop in Tibet. This guide is based on real-world experience and packed with practical tips; beginners can follow it directly to easily enjoy Markam Yanjing.

This Sichuan-Tibet trip far exceeded my expectations! I witnessed firsthand the magnificent 72 bends of the Nujiang River, the vastness of the Sister Lakes and Dongda Mountain, the sapphire-like Yamdrok Lake nestled among the mountains, the Potala Palace breathtakingly beautiful under the sunlight, and the sacred mountains and lakes of Daocheng Yading that truly touched my soul. Every step along the 318 highway was a picturesque scene. The hotels were comfortable, and the Tibetan photography sessions were full of ritual. Special thanks to our tour leader, Brother Ping, who was familiar with the high altitude, constantly monitored our physical condition, avoided crowds to find the best scenic spots for photography, and drove safely and confidently on the mountain roads. Customer service representative, Ms. Wan Hua, also deserves praise; she meticulously answered all my concerns before departure and responded quickly and effectively to any issues that arose during the trip. The entire trip was purely sightseeing with no shopping stops. Driving the 318 is a must-do in my lifetime; I sincerely recommend it—it was definitely worth the trip. Changdu is beautiful, but I don't recommend visiting in October–November to suffer. Just finished a 4-day trip to Changdu, let me give you the honest truth🍂! The autumn scenery in Changdu is truly stunning, but coming in October–November means enduring low temperatures and long, tiring journeys, which many people find difficult. However, if you prefer quiet mountains and want to avoid the crowds, you can save this practical guide. 🌤 Local climate In October–November, daytime temperatures in Changdu are around 7–16°C. It's sunny, and the forests in the river valleys are slowly turning golden. However, the temperature difference between day and night is extreme; it drops below freezing at night, and the mountain winds are biting. The air is dry, UV rays are strong, and mountain weather is changeable, with occasional scattered light rain and rapid temperature drops. 📅 4-day itinerary Day 1: Arrive in downtown Changdu and acclimate to the altitude first🏔. No high-intensity attractions planned. In the afternoon, visit the Changdu Museum to learn about Khampa culture. In the evening, take a walk along the Lancang River, watch the river flow through the canyon, and get some rest early to conserve energy. Day 2: Day trip to Zizhu Temple. This is a must-visit hidden gem in Changdu, built suspended on a red cliff, with the autumn mountains showing layers of changing colors. There are many winding mountain roads and the drive is long, so be sure to allow plenty of time. It's freezing cold on the mountain, so don't stay too long for photos. Day 3: Qiangba Temple + Karuo Ruins. In the morning, visit Qiangba Temple; the red walls of the ancient temple paired with the autumn forest create a great atmosphere. In the afternoon, head to the Karuo Ruins to experience the ancient prehistoric civilization. The autumn colors in the valleys along the way are beautiful and perfect for photos. Day 4: A short, leisurely trip toward Markam to see the colorful forests in the river valley, then a slow journey back. Enjoy the autumn scenery on both sides of the Lancang River along the way, pick out some local specialties from shops you like, and conclude your trip. 🧳 Travel tips 1. Changdu has a high altitude and many mountain roads, making altitude sickness likely. Avoid running or jumping, and have glucose, moisturizing lip balm, and face cream ready. 2. There are many winding roads in the mountains, so drive carefully and slowly if you are self-driving. If hiring a car, prioritize drivers who are familiar with local road conditions. 3. Dress modestly when visiting temples; do not expose your shoulders or knees. Do not take photos of monks without permission. 4. Carry a thick jacket, hat, and gloves with you. Mountain weather changes quickly, so even if it's sunny, be prepared with rain gear. 🏨 Accommodation guide Prioritize staying in downtown Changdu, where dining options and pharmacies are readily available, and most rooms have oxygen supply, making it suitable for those new to the plateau. Try to avoid small inns in the mountains, as water and electricity can be unstable in autumn and winter. Accommodation near Zizhu Temple is basic, so staying overnight is not recommended; a day trip is suggested. There are many hotel options in the city; if your budget allows, choose a room with floor heating, which will be much more comfortable for keeping warm at night. 💛 Summary Why do I say I don't recommend visiting Changdu in October–November to suffer? Because the mountain roads are long and the temperatures are low, making the journey truly tiring. But looking at it from another angle, there are very few tourists this season, no crowds, and you get mountains full of colorful forests and cliffside ancient temples—it's quiet and magnificent. If you don't mind long journeys, can tolerate low temperatures, and are willing to calm your mind and experience the autumn of the Khampa region, then Changdu will definitely surprise you. For those who are afraid of the cold or long car rides, I suggest visiting in a different season.

Although the property isn't huge, the service and environment are absolutely incredible! ✨ We were gifted Songtsam's signature cloth shoes and afternoon tea as soon as we checked in 🍵 The highland barley cookies were so delicious 😋 I couldn't stop eating them. There's also a Songtsam souvenir shop in the hotel lobby 🛍️ It's full of fun Tibetan-style trinkets—I couldn't help but buy a bunch! The Tibetan staff were incredibly welcoming and warm 🔥 They proactively helped with our luggage and even washed our car (yes, you read that right! Our dusty car from the G318 highway was taken care of perfectly). 📍Location: Zhuka Village, Rumei Town, Markam Situated by the Lancang River at a relatively low altitude, it's the perfect place to rest during your G318 trip 🏔️ Open the window to see terraced fields, ancient bunker ruins, and magnificent river views 🌊 Sitting in the wooden lobby during the day, basking in the sun while sipping butter tea, felt so healing 🥹 It truly is the warmest stop along the G318 highway~ If you're passing by, don't miss it!

September ends with one unforgettable road story. Starting in Kunming, the journey heads north through the Nujiang Valley and into the wild landscapes of Yunnan and Tibet — more than 4,000 kilometres of winding mountain roads, high passes, deep gorges and remote villages, before reaching Motuo and eventually returning to Lijiang. This is Bingchacha, a route where the road itself becomes part of the adventure. One moment the mountains open into an immense valley; the next, the road disappears into clouds and mist. Rivers appear far below, snow mountains rise beyond the bends, and every pass seems to reveal another landscape entirely. Along the way came the First Bend of the Nujiang River, the dramatic Nujiang Great Landslide, Dala Village in Bingzhongluo, the ancient stonework of Basu, the G219 6666-kilometre marker, the misty beauty of Wuli Village, Miyou Snow Mountain, and the spectacular Guoguo Pond Bend of the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon. Among all these grand landscapes, some of the most memorable moments were much quieter — a traditional Dulong woman in her nineties, an isolated village hidden among mountains, a river winding patiently through the valley, or a distant county appearing through the clouds like a mirage. This is not simply a journey across a map. It is a journey through some of China's most remote and dramatic landscapes, where mountains, rivers, people and roads become one continuous story. 📍 Yunnan–Tibet | Nujiang · Bingzhongluo · Bingchacha · Basu · Motuo 📸 Photography Tip: Let the road lead the composition. Winding mountain roads, tiny villages and distant figures can add a powerful sense of scale to the immense landscape. ✨ Signature Feeling: Wild, remote and endlessly changing — the kind of journey where every bend makes you wonder what lies beyond the next mountain. When the road disappears into the clouds, sometimes the best thing to do is simply keep going.

Our driver on this trip to the Sichuan-Tibet Highway, Mr. Liu, is a young man with excellent driving skills. He handled various road conditions with ease. He was always happy to help us with any problems we had, saving us a lot of time. We are truly grateful to him. One day, we encountered a huge traffic jam on our way to Mangkang, and didn't arrive at our hotel until the early hours of the morning. He had to set off again around 7 a.m. the next morning to continue our journey. His dedication is commendable. Safe driving ensures a worry-free trip. I will definitely ask this young man for help again next time I travel to the Sichuan-Tibet Highway.

🍜 Authentic food: Honestly, you need a wild appetite here A Tibetan hot pot for two costs just over 200, and you'll leave stuffed. It's a pot stewed with yak meat, Tibetan pork, and mushrooms. Any place around Tea Horse Square is a safe bet🍲. In Mangkam, the Yanjing Jiajia noodles are served one bite at a time; you stack stones for every bowl you eat—it's all about the ritual🥢. Tibetan noodles with butter tea cost 15, and a bowl in the morning is enough to keep you full and ease altitude sickness. Remember to haggle when buying souvenirs at the salt fields; red salt is 15 yuan/bag, and white salt is around 10 yuan. It makes meat taste amazing when cooked🧂. 👗 Packing essentials: Qamdo in September will wreck your image It's 20°C during the day and drops to 8–10°C at night. The temperature difference is so ridiculous it'll make you question reality🌡️. A thin down jacket, fleece, and windbreaker are must-haves. Sunglasses, SPF 50+ sunscreen, and lip balm are non-negotiable, or your lips will crack to pieces. It's below freezing at Ranwu Lake morning and night. Don't ask if it's hot; just know you'll be frozen stiff🥶. The ice at Laigu Glacier is slippery enough to make you question your life choices, so wear high-top, non-slip shoes. 🚗 Transportation guide: Narrow roads and sharp turns, not for beginners The flight lands at Bangda Airport, the second-highest in the world at 4,334 meters. Don't shower or drink alcohol on the first day; altitude sickness is no joke✈️. Attractions are scattered everywhere, and it's hundreds of kilometers between counties. Hiring an off-road vehicle for 800–1,000 yuan a day is 10 times safer than driving yourself. The 72 Bends of the Nujiang River are thrilling but dangerous, with lots of falling rocks and difficult passing. Beginners, stay away🚙. ⚠️ Tips to avoid pitfalls: I've already made these mistakes for you Don't do strenuous exercise for the first 3 days after landing at Bangda Airport. Stock up on glucose and ibuprofen, and wait until you're back at a lower altitude to shower. Don't take close-ups of monks in temples. Walk clockwise around prayer wheels, but counter-clockwise for Bon temples. Don't step on prayer flags or touch children's heads🙏. Keep your ID and border permit with you; they'll check them heading toward Mangkam. There are few places to eat on the road, so bring enough dry food and snacks; you'll be stuck if you get hungry. Never get out of the car to follow or feed wild animals. Hunting is banned throughout Qamdo, and you don't want to mess with Tibetan brown bears or snow leopards🐻❄️. Check for no-fly zones before using a drone around the 72 Bends or temples. 🏔️ Must-visit attractions: Autumn scenery is god-tier, Ranwu Lake is heartbreakingly blue September is the peak of Qamdo's beauty🍁. Ranwu Lake's water turns blue or green depending on the season. The reflection on the east bank before 9 AM is stunning💙. Zizhu Temple is on Zizhu Mountain in Dingqing County. It's an ancient Bon temple built into the mountain, rated 4.8, and free, but you can only get there by off-road vehicle. The 72 Bends of the Nujiang River are on G318; the road is narrow and steep, a must for drone photography. Visit the thousand-year-old salt fields in Mangkam to see the manual salt-making process for free. Qiangbalin Temple is next to National Highway 317 and has many Buddha statues and murals. Three-Color Lake is in Bianba, with black, white, and yellow lakes adjacent, rated 4.7. Danda Mountain is high and snowy year-round; snow lovers will be thrilled❄️. Laigu Glacier's current operating status is pending notice; check real-time opening information on Trip.com before you go so you don't waste a trip. 💡 Book flights and hotels on Trip.com a week in advance. Lake-view rooms at Ranwu Lake get expensive on weekends, but otherwise, it's so empty you'll feel like you have the place to yourself. Qamdo doesn't need filters to look like a wallpaper. It's straightforward about your health and the road conditions—respect its altitude and winding roads, and it will reward you with pristine snow-capped mountains✨.

Changdu is best experienced as a slow-paced plateau journey. It is not a destination where you just visit one spot and leave. The canyons, rivers, snow-capped mountains, temples, and villages along the way are all connected, and the most moving scenery is often found on the road itself. When you first arrive in Changdu, take some time to acclimatize to the altitude and climate. Don't rush to fill your itinerary. Start by wandering through the city streets, observing the Tibetan-style architecture and local life, and then plan your excursions based on how you feel. Your trip will be much more comfortable this way. For a cultural experience, check out the Qiangbalin Monastery and the surrounding area to soak in the architecture, colors, and daily atmosphere of an Eastern Tibetan monastery. Please remain quiet during your visit and respect local customs. Whether certain areas are open depends on the situation on the ground, so don't feel pressured to see every corner in one go. If you have enough time, focus on the river canyons and plateau highways. As the Lancang River winds through the mountains, the views will open up and close in by turns. When you encounter viewpoints, villages, prayer flags, or snow-capped mountains, consider stopping for a while—don't just treat the journey as a race to the destination. The area around Changdu is vast. Destinations like Ranwu Lake and Laigu Glacier require more time, so be sure to check road, weather, and vehicle conditions in advance. Plateau weather changes quickly, so it is best to keep your itinerary flexible. If you encounter rain, snow, landslides, or feel unwell, adjust your plans accordingly. For budget and practical tips, prioritize suitable public transportation or carpooling with others. Try to compare accommodation and dining options in advance, but don't sacrifice your rest just to cut costs. Pack sunscreen, warm clothing, lip balm, and essential medications. It is also a good idea to keep water, snacks, and charging equipment with you. There is no need to obsess over checking in at every spot. Trying local Tibetan food, sitting in a small shop for a while, and politely interacting with locals are often more memorable than rushing to take photos. The charm of Changdu lies in its vastness, tranquility, and ever-changing nature. The more space you leave in your schedule, the easier it is to encounter surprises✨

Before going to Qamdo, my imagination of Tibet was limited to the Potala Palace in Lhasa and the waters of Namtso Lake. It wasn't until I stood by the thousand-year-old salt fields in Yanjing and watched the sunset dye the entire salt field a golden pink that I realized the beauty of Tibet goes far beyond those popular tourist spots. This hidden gem in eastern Tibet, Qamdo, gave me the most profound memories of this trip. The story starts with that winding mountain road It takes four or five hours of driving on mountain roads to get from downtown Qamdo to Yanjing. To be honest, I regretted it a bit at first—there were too many curves, which made me dizzy, and the whole way was just canyons. While the scenery was magnificent, I eventually got a bit tired of looking at it. But when the car crossed the last mountain pass and the Lancang River Canyon suddenly unfolded beneath my feet, I was instantly energized. The river surged at the bottom of the valley, and on the slopes of both banks, patches of white salt fields spread out like stairs, glistening in the sunlight. At that moment, I knew this trip was worth it. The right way to experience the salt fields The ancient salt fields of Yanjing have a history of over 1,300 years and are still using the most primitive methods to dry salt. The admission ticket costs a few dozen yuan, which is not expensive. I recommend going in at 2:00 PM or 3:00 PM. First, visit the Salt Field Museum to learn about the history and craft of salt drying, then head down to the salt fields to experience it firsthand. The salt fields are built on the steep slopes on both sides of the Lancang River, supported by countless wooden frames covered with mud and stone slabs. Brine is channeled in to dry, and after the water evaporates, salt remains. The salt on the west bank is white, while the salt on the east bank is pink, because the mineral content of the brine on the two banks is different—it's quite magical. I walked around the salt fields for over two hours. Narrow wooden boardwalks weave between the salt fields, with canyons dozens of meters deep right beneath my feet; my legs were actually a bit weak while walking. There were many local Tibetan women working in the salt fields, carrying wooden buckets to fetch water from the brine wells by the river, then pouring it into the salt fields bucket by bucket. Their movements were skillful, and they had peaceful smiles on their faces; they would generously wave when they saw me taking photos. I tried to help an elderly woman carry a wooden bucket and almost couldn't stand up; that bucket of water weighed at least 20–30 lbs. They have to carry it back and forth dozens of times every day—it's really not easy. The sunset is the soul of the salt fields If the salt fields are magnificent during the day, they are absolutely stunning at sunset. I found a high viewing platform to wait. Around 6:00 PM, the sun began to sink, and the light changed from blinding white to warm orange, and then to a dreamy pink. The color of the salt fields changed along with it; the white salt surfaces reflected the sky, turning from silvery white to golden yellow, and then to pinkish purple. The surface of the Lancang River was also covered with the evening glow, and the entire canyon looked like it had been set on fire. I stood there, watching everything before me, and I got goosebumps—not because of the cold, but because it was so beautiful, so beautiful it made me want to cry. My friends who were with me also stopped talking and quietly watched the sunset until the last ray of light disappeared behind the mountains. A morning at Qiangbalin Monastery Besides the salt fields, Qiangbalin Monastery in downtown Qamdo also left a deep impression on me. I went there a little after 7:00 AM. The sky was just beginning to brighten, and there were already many people circumambulating the temple. The scent of yak butter floated in the air, and the low sound of chanting came from the sutra hall. Sunlight shone through the windows, forming beams of light in the air. I stood at the entrance of the sutra hall for a long time, watching the monks chant and the elderly performing prostrations. That power of faith is contagious. You don't need to understand what they are chanting, nor do you need to have any religious belief; standing in that environment, you naturally calm down and feel a sense of respect for this land and the people here. That morning at Ranwu Lake Before leaving Qamdo, I stayed one night by Ranwu Lake. I got up a little after 6:00 AM; it wasn't light yet, and there was no one by the lake. I wrapped myself in a coat and sat by the lake, waiting for the sunrise. The sky changed from deep blue to light blue, and then to pale pink. The peaks of the snow-capped mountains were illuminated first, then the light moved down bit by bit, and finally, the entire snow-capped mountain turned golden. There wasn't a breath of wind on the lake surface, and the reflection of the snow-capped mountains was clearly mirrored in the water, like a symmetrical painting. At that moment, I felt that all the early rising, all the rushing about, and all the altitude sickness were worth it. 🏠 About where to stay That night in Yanjing, I stayed at a guesthouse run by a local Tibetan family, right by the Lancang River. I could see the salt fields just by opening the window. The house was a traditional Tibetan stone tower, with thick stone walls, making the room warm in winter and cool in summer. The decor was a blend of Tibetan and Han styles, featuring Tibetan-style wooden furniture and Thangka decorations, as well as a clean, private bathroom and an electric blanket. The owner was a warm Tibetan man who would tell guests about the history and stories of Yanjing, and in the evening, he would invite everyone to drink yak butter tea and chat. The guesthouse's terrace is a great place to watch the sunset. You don't need to go to the scenic area; sitting on the terrace, you can see the salt fields dyed golden pink by the sunset, which is especially convenient.

Guys, you won't believe this! I was just tired from driving on National Highway 214 and wanted to take a break at the Hongla Mountain Pass Viewing Platform. But when I looked up, I was absolutely speechless! 😱 That spectacular row of snow-capped mountains across the way is actually Yunnan's Meili Snow Mountain! 🏔️ The main peak, Kawagarbo, is partially hidden in the clouds. This is actually a hidden gem for viewing **Dameiyong Snow Mountain**—locals call it the third daughter of Meili Snow Mountain. At an altitude of 6,434 meters, it's incredible! It's located right on the side of the Yunnan-Tibet Highway (G214), at the border of Markam County in Tibet and Deqin County in Yunnan. Just search for "Hongla Mountain Viewing Platform" in your navigation app. There's a small parking lot and a viewing platform, so road trippers can park with ease. 🚗 The view is wide open and unobstructed. On a clear day, you can get amazing close-up shots of the snow-capped mountains and glaciers! 📸 You can also see the magnificent scenery of Gatuo Snow Mountain, the Lancang River Grand Canyon, and the Hengduan Mountains. With prayer flags fluttering in the wind, the atmosphere is just perfect. 🙏 This is also the Hongla Mountain National Nature Reserve, a habitat for the Yunnan snub-nosed monkey. 🐒 You can see statues of them nearby, and the ecology here is amazing! With clear skies, snow-capped mountains, and prayer flags, every photo looks like a masterpiece. Your social media feed will be blowing up with questions! 🔥 Quick tip: The light is best in the afternoon. Remember to bring a telephoto lens for clearer shots of the snow-capped mountains!

Deep within the Hengduan Mountains lies a little-known yet breathtaking hidden gem—Lawu Mountain in Markam County, Qamdo, Tibet 🏔️ It is not only an important mountain pass on the G318 Sichuan-Tibet southern route but also an excellent observation deck overlooking the Lancang River Grand Canyon! As you cross the Lawu Mountain pass at an altitude of 4,376 meters, the view suddenly opens up: the dragon-like, winding Lancang River surges through the deep valley, flanked by towering cliffs and swirling clouds, making you feel as if you are standing inside a living landscape painting 🖼️ 📍Address: Lawu Mountain observation deck, near Markam County Government, Gesar Road, Markam County, Qamdo 🕐Opening hours: Open 24/7, year-round Lawu Mountain is located in Markam County in the eastern Tibet Autonomous Region, at the junction of Sichuan, Yunnan, and Tibet, and is an important part of the Hengduan Mountains 🌲 As the first high mountain pass on the G318 National Highway after entering Tibet from Sichuan, Lawu Mountain has historically been an important passage on the Ancient Tea Horse Road, bearing witness to thousands of years of trade and cultural exchange 📜 The Lancang River glitters in the sunlight, like a giant dragon weaving through the mountain peaks 🐉 Rich in minerals, the river displays a blend of cyan and deep blue, contrasting sharply with the ocher-red cliffs on either side to create a naturally stunning visual masterpiece 🎨 Especially in the early morning or after the rain, mist rises in the canyon and swirls around the mountainside, while distant villages appear and disappear, creating an ethereal, fairyland-like atmosphere ☁️ Set up your camera at this moment; the long-exposure river flow looks like silk, and the beauty of this blend of motion and stillness will make you want to linger for a long time 📸 🏆Best season: May–October! I actually discovered this hidden gem along the 214 highway from Tibet to Yunnan✨ The thousand-year-old Yanjing Village tucked away by National Highway 214 is absolutely stunning!🌾 📍Location: Naxi Ethnic Township, Markam County, Qamdo 🚗Transportation: Driving along National Highway 214 from Markam County takes about 3 hours. You can also take a taxi or carpool. There is one daily bus from the passenger station to Deqin and Markam respectively, both a little over 100 km away. Of course, driving yourself is more convenient, but check road conditions before you go as the 214 is occasionally interrupted. 🏔️This small village, built on both banks of the Lancang River, sits at an altitude of 2,300 meters. It gets its name from salt production and is called "Tsakalho" in Tibetan📿 Salt production here dates back to the Tang Dynasty, with a history of over 1,200 years! 🌟The most amazing part: The salt fields on either side of the river are different colors! The west bank produces red salt, and the east bank produces white salt. Two colors of salt separated by just one river—how incredible is that!🎨 🏗️The wooden salt fields are built into the mountainside in layers. They use underground brine to dry the salt, preserving traditional manual salt-making techniques to this day. This is the only surviving primitive manual salt-making landscape on the Ancient Tea Horse Road! Every salt field is a living cultural heritage; it gave me goosebumps just looking at it💫 🌧️It was drizzling when we visited. The salt fields felt even more atmospheric in the misty rain, like something out of a painting. The salt fields shimmered in the rain, and the distant Lancang River was shrouded in mist. It was incredibly photogenic!📸 💡Tips: Driving is recommended, as the scenery along National Highway 214 is stunning. The section of the 214 from Markam to Deqin, Yunnan, was just repaired a few months ago. You can experience Tibetan culture along the way and soak in the historical charm of the Ancient Tea Horse Road.

I just got back from Qamdo, and I really want to recommend this underrated destination. Before I left, my impression of Qamdo was just that it was a city in eastern Tibet, and I was thinking of coming to see the snow-capped mountains and grasslands. But once I actually arrived, I realized: Qamdo isn't just a place you "pass through," but a hidden gem worth setting aside time to explore slowly. August in Qamdo is when it hits its peak beauty. The snow-capped mountains are still magnificent, the grasslands are lush green, wildflowers are blooming in the river valleys, and the sky is as blue as if it had been washed clean. It's not as crowded as Lhasa, and it doesn't have the massive crowds of popular tourist spots. Instead, it offers raw nature, Tibetan culture, and a slow pace that lets you unwind. If you love snow-capped mountains, grasslands, and canyons, and want to experience true eastern Tibetan scenery, Qamdo is definitely worth a trip. Unforgettable experiences My biggest takeaway from this trip to Qamdo is that it's both stunning and healing. The beauty here isn't carefully packaged; you'll be amazed just by driving along. You might pass a grassland one second and see snow-capped mountains and canyons the next; you might turn a mountain pass and see high mountains wrapped in clouds. The most memorable part for me was Ranwu Lake. In August, the lake water is a clear blue-green, and the distant snow-capped mountains are reflected in it—it's like walking into a computer wallpaper. Then there's Laigu Glacier; standing in front of the massive glacier makes you feel so small. The greatest charm of Qamdo is "being on the road." It's a place to explore slowly; you don't need to rush between attractions, and every turn might bring a surprise. Relaxed itinerary Day 1: Arrive in Qamdo > Qiangbalin Monastery > Explore Qamdo city Morning: Arrive in Qamdo and check into your hotel. It's recommended to stay in downtown Qamdo for convenient dining and supplies. Afternoon: First stop, Qiangbalin Monastery. This is a very representative Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Qamdo. The temple is built against the mountain with spectacular architecture, allowing you to experience rich Tibetan culture. Photo spots: · Temple exterior · Mountain slope viewing area · Kora path Evening: Explore downtown Qamdo. You can visit local restaurants to experience Tibetan cuisine. Day 2: Ranwu Lake > Laigu Glacier > Nujiang Canyon Morning: Wake up early and head to Ranwu Lake. Route: Qamdo > Basu > Ranwu Lake The scenery along the way is stunning. Don't just stay at Ranwu Lake for ten minutes. It's recommended to walk slowly along the lake. Photo spots: · Lakeside viewing platform · Snow-capped mountain reflection spot · Road curve Noon: Have a simple meal nearby. Supplies are limited in high-altitude areas, so it's recommended to prepare water and snacks in advance. Afternoon: Head to Laigu Glacier. Although it's summer in August, the glacier is still spectacular. The combination of blue glacier, snow-capped mountains, and meadows is dreamy. Evening: Return to your accommodation to rest. Day 3: Karuo Ruins > Yanjing Ancient Salt Fields > Departure Morning: Head to the Karuo Ruins. Here you can learn about the long history of human civilization in Qamdo. Afterward, visit the surrounding natural landscapes. Afternoon: Arrange a visit to the Yanjing Ancient Salt Fields based on your departure time. The colorful salt fields here are very special. Photo spots: · High point of the salt fields · River valley viewing spot · Village roads End of the Qamdo trip. Photo tips Great for photos: Ranwu Lake: Wear white, blue, or Tibetan-style clothing. The lake and snow-capped mountain background are perfect for great photos. Laigu Glacier: Bring sunglasses and sunscreen, as the glacier reflection is very strong. Grassland roads: There are many places suitable for stopping and taking photos during your road trip. Independent travel highlights: Qamdo is best for road trips. Because many of the most beautiful spots are on the road. Don't just focus on the attractions; the snow-capped mountains, roads, and villages along the way are all part of your travel memories. You don't need to pack your schedule too full every day; taking it slow is the right way to experience Qamdo. Tips to avoid pitfalls Do not plan strenuous exercise on the first day in high-altitude areas; give your body time to adapt. The UV rays are very strong in August, so be sure to use sun protection. Weather in mountainous areas changes quickly, so it's recommended to prepare a windbreaker and rain gear. Do not buy wildlife products or ingredients of unknown origin, and do not eat wild animals or wild fish. Signal is unstable in some areas, so plan your route in advance if you are driving. Limited-time scenery Ranwu Lake A combination of snow-capped mountains, lakes, and grasslands; a must-see in Qamdo. Laigu Glacier Experience the shock of the glacier up close; it's still spectacular in summer. Qiangbalin Monastery A combination of architecture, culture, and faith; very characteristic of the Tibetan region. Yanjing Ancient Salt Fields A combination of colorful salt fields and canyons; very unique. Food highlights Butter tea: A must-try when coming to the Tibetan region. The taste is rich, with a milky and tea aroma. Experience: You might not be used to it at first, but it's especially warming to drink a cup during high-altitude travel. Tsampa: Traditional food in the Tibetan region. Unique texture with the aroma of highland barley. Experience: Best enjoyed with butter tea. Yak meat: The meat is firm and fragrant. It's recommended to choose yak meat provided by regular restaurants and not buy ingredients of unknown origin. Tibetan noodles: The broth is simple but very warming. It's very comfortable to eat a bowl during high-altitude travel. Reminder: Do not eat wild animals or wild fish during your trip; choosing regular restaurants is safer. Relaxed guide Tickets: Many natural landscapes in Qamdo are mainly for sightseeing; some attractions require tickets, so it's more convenient to check in advance. Transportation: External: You can fly or drive from Chengdu or Lhasa. Within the city: City transportation is convenient. It's recommended to drive or charter a car to go to Ranwu Lake, glaciers, and other places. Accommodation: It's recommended to stay in the city for one night, then arrange accommodation along the way according to your route. Budget reference: Three days and two nights per person: Transportation: 500–1,000 CNY Accommodation: 300–600 CNY Dining: 200–400 CNY Tickets: 100–300 CNY Total budget is about 1,200–2,000 CNY. High-altitude travel costs are slightly higher than in ordinary cities, but the experience is completely worth it. Hard-learned lessons The biggest lesson: I underestimated the high-altitude weather! August looks like summer, but the temperature difference between day and night is very obvious. Be sure to bring thicker clothes. Also, don't push yourself just for photos. The most important thing in high-altitude travel is your physical condition. Take it slow, adapt slowly, and the experience will be more comfortable. Overall impression Qamdo is a place you will remember forever after visiting. Regarding accommodation, it's recommended to prioritize locations with convenient transportation; for dining, stick to local regular restaurants; for transportation, it's best to plan in advance, as a road trip experience will be freer; for souvenirs, you can buy some highland barley products or local handicrafts. The thing I like most about Qamdo is that it still retains its primitive beauty. There is not much commercial packaging here, only snow-capped mountains, rivers, grasslands, and real life in eastern Tibet. If you want to find a quiet, stunning place where you can truly get close to nature, Qamdo in August is really worth the trip. Best time May–June: The grasslands start to turn green, suitable for viewing natural scenery. August–September: Qamdo is at its peak beauty, with very beautiful grasslands, lakes, and snow-capped mountains. October: The autumn colors are rich, suitable for photography. If you ask me when I recommend going the most? The answer is definitely August. Because Qamdo at this time has the greenest mountains, the bluest lakes, and the purest sky; it is the season most worth visiting in the whole year.
