The city walls of Taizhou Prefecture, also known as the Great Wall of the South

The city walls of Taizhou Prefecture, also referred to as the Great Wall of the South or the Badaling of the South, span over 6,000 meters in length, with more than 5,000 meters still existing today. Starting from the Lansheng Gate in the east, it winds along the ridge of Beigu Mountain to the Yanxia Pavilion, reaching directly to the steep cliffs along the eastern bank of the Ling River, extending to the western foothills of Jinshan Mountain. It follows the contours of the mountains, overlooking the great river, with the northern part being the most precipitous. The city walls of Taizhou Prefecture were initially constructed during the Eastern Jin Dynasty, consisting of the wall body, city gates, gate towers, barbicans, moats, defensive bridges, watchtowers, horse faces, embrasures, and parapets. The city walls of Taizhou Prefecture are one of the exemplars of ancient Chinese urban construction, embodying both the function of military defense and the craftsmanship and aesthetics of ancient architecture.
