The Longmen Grottoes in Luoyang

I have visited both the Longmen Grottoes and the Yungang Grottoes. Both grottoes began construction during the Northern Wei Dynasty. The largest Buddha statue in the Yungang Grottoes is of Sakyamuni Buddha, while the largest in the Longmen Grottoes is of Vairocana Buddha. The Yungang Grottoes started carving earlier in 398 AD, with most caves completed before the Northern Wei Dynasty moved its capital to Luoyang (over a period of 60 years), and the statue-making project spanned over 150 years through the Northern Wei, Eastern Wei, Western Wei, Northern Qi, Sui, and Tang dynasties. The Longmen Grottoes began in the Northern Wei Dynasty (500 AD), flourished in the Tang, and ended in the late Qing. It has been constructed over more than 1400 years through more than ten dynasties including the Northern Wei, Eastern Wei, Western Wei, Northern Qi, Sui, Tang, Five Dynasties, Song, Ming, and Qing, making it the longest-constructed grotto in the world. Personally, I feel that the Vairocana Buddha in the Longmen Grottoes is more in line with modern aesthetics than the Sakyamuni Buddha in the Yungang Grottoes, and it is said to have been carved in the image of Empress Wu Zetian. The face is dignified and serene, with eyes slightly looking downward as if paying attention to every person. Moreover, the statues in the Longmen Grottoes are clearly more delicate and rounded than those in the Yungang Grottoes, especially the Vairocana Buddha and the group statues in the Fengxian Temple where it resides. Of course, the Fengxian Temple's open-air grottoes were only started to be carved during the Tang Dynasty. Compared to the Northern Wei period, the craftsmanship and overall aesthetics of the Tang Dynasty had undergone significant changes, and the national power of the Tang Dynasty was far beyond that of the Northern Wei. Therefore, in conclusion, the Longmen Grottoes are worth visiting. I visited the Longmen Grottoes 10 years ago when there were not so many people. This time I went on April 29th, and I didn't expect the Longmen Grottoes in Luoyang to be overcrowded before the May Day holiday. I wonder if tourists will still be able to squeeze into these attractions for a visit during the May Day period
