North York: A famous affluent area in Toronto, and one of the fastest-growing regions

North York is a newly risen urban area, established as a township (The Township of North York) in June 1922. With the rapid urbanization within the town, it was upgraded to a city (City of North York) in February 1979. After merging with the other six cities of old Toronto in 1998, it became a district under the jurisdiction of the City of Toronto (North York Community). The central area of North York is situated above Toronto's main street, Yonge Street, between Finch Avenue and Sheppard Avenue. The area is filled with shops and commercial buildings. To the northeast of the former city hall, there are two shopping malls connected by an underground passage, which also leads to the subway station. North York has a very low crime rate, one of the lowest in North America. Therefore, it has many famous luxury residential areas and is the dwelling place for many wealthy Canadians. Many celebrities also choose to settle in this area. Chinese immigrants are the second-largest ethnic group in North York, accounting for 12% of the population (the first being White, at 53%), hence there are many Chinese restaurants in the area.
