Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon is a famous Buddhist temple located in Ayutthaya, Thailand. It is also known as Wat Chao Phraya Thai, and its full name is Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon Worawihan. The temple is known for its magnificent pagoda, which is one of the largest in Ayutthaya and is visible from far away. The history of Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon dates back to the 14th century, during the reign of King U-Thong. At that time, the area where the temple is located was a jungle. The king wanted to establish a new city, and he ordered the construction of the temple to mark the city's northern entrance. The temple was built to house a Buddha image, which the king had ordered to be cast. Over the years, the temple underwent several renovations and expansions, with each subsequent king of Ayutthaya adding to its splendor. In the 16th century, King Naresuan the Great added a large chedi (pagoda) to the temple, which is the most notable feature of the temple today. The chedi is about 62 meters tall and has a diameter of about 36 meters at its base. It is surrounded by smaller chedis, each containing a Buddha image. The temple was also used as a site for royal ceremonies, and several kings of Ayutthaya were cremated at the temple. During the Burmese invasion of Ayutthaya in the 18th century, the temple was badly damaged. It fell into disrepair until the 1950s when it was restored by the Fine Arts Department of Thailand. Today, Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon is a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors from all over the world. The temple is known for its beautiful architecture and its peaceful atmosphere. Visitors can climb up the chedi to enjoy a panoramic view of the surrounding area. The temple also houses several important Buddha images, including a reclining Buddha and a standing Buddha. Legend has it that King Naresuan the Great used the temple grounds to train his soldiers in the art of Muay Thai. Today, there is a statue of King Naresuan the Great at the temple, depicting him in a pose that is typical of Muay Thai fighters.
