Tree midst of the Lake

We had an extended stay in Wanaka due to the Covid-19 lockdown so it was easy to see the famous tree in the lake without too many visitors being around. It's located to the left hand side of the bay as you look towards the lake from the town centre so if you're not keen on walking head to the car park at that end of town. It's a bit unique in that it is located offshore and survives in the lake, then combine that with the backdrop and you have a picture postcard. I'd recommend actually taking a walk beyond the Wanaka Tree along the shoreline towards Waterfall Creek for some additional nice views of the town and lake. If you have the energy and time, a walk along part of the Glendhu Trail in that same direction would be worth considering (there is a car park at Waterfall Creek where you can access the trail). We learned that some locals are not that keen on the tree and in fact prior to our visit someone had vandalised it by cutting off a few branches.
