Magome Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Apr)
Magome
I love this place very much!! It is very beautiful, having ancient vibes and more importantly not many tourists around. There is a wide viewing platform. The shops, even restaurants, are mostly closed by 5pm. As suggested by the hostel, I had dinner at one eatery and tried sukiyaki. It is a Japanese dish with beef, vegetables, tofu and noodles with sake in the sweet sauce. Worthy to try!
Traditional old merchants road

This is at the Magome end of the Magome- Tsumago trail which is also known as the Nakasendo trail. This route runs along the Kiso Valley and connected Tokyo with Kyoto during the Edo Period. It was mostly used by merchants. It is about 8 kilometers long and takes approximately 2-3 hours to walk at a leisurely pace. However, I took around 4-5 hours to complete 🤭There are small shophouses at the magome end and nice soba~ There are some good views along the trail that you can enjoy ~
Kiso Valley is located af south western Nagano, Japan, best known for Magome and Tsumago, beautifully preserved tradional villages. With one of the most famous hiking paths in all Japan, we set foot there on our quest for traditional Japan, away from temples and geisha sights.
We highly recommend visiting the Kiso Valley, but a little preparation goes a long way. It’s important to have some historical and cultural knowledge and it’s useful to do a little planning because the area is a a bit remote and not as convenient as the bigger cities. Stunning forests, beautiful villages and traditions, we loved every minute we spent there and would recommend it to everyone interested in nature and history.

Nakasendo Path
We start in the city of Nagoya. It is better to plan the trip early in the morning, from Nagoya Station, you will first need to take a train for a little more than an hour to Nakatsugawo Station. Then take a bus that leads to the Magome stop. The journey to the starting point of the journey will take about two hours.
You need to prepare in advance by wearing comfortable trekking shoes, and take rain capes with you.
Basically, everyone goes from Magome to Tsumago-jiku, but you can expand your vacation program and get to another point of Narai-juku.
The walk begins with small shops, souvenirs, and cafes. Immediately there is a view of the houses in the traditional Japanese style.
Everything is provided on the route, clean free toilets, there is a house in which a local resident offers to drink hot tea with sweets in a heated room for donations. There are also bells on the route that you need to ring to scare away bears.
The whole way is crowned with signs where to go next, so you will definitely not get lost.
In the middle of the path there are two waterfalls.
So, we reach the last house. We take a bus to Nagiso Train Station, buy a ticket to Narai to go to the most luxurious view of the way, Nara-juku. This is the place that you will see in all the photos that embody this path. The place is truly unique.
The train ride passes through the It lasts about an hour.
It is worth noting that shops and cafes are open mainly until 16:00.
It is also worth adding that the path of the nakasendo is longer than the indicated points, you can find out more about this by taking detailed guidebooks at the stations.
The path along the nakasendo turned out to be very exciting, at the same time easy to pass and memorable, brought a lot of positive emotions and a charge of vivacity and positivity.#nakasendo #magomejuku #Nakasendo

【Gassho Village】A Must-See When Visiting Gero Onsen!
It's about a 15-minute walk from Gero Onsen to Gassho Village.
Unlike Shirakawa-go, there is an admission fee of 1,000 yen (for adults), but it's worth it for the impressive sights. Inside the buildings, there are exhibits placed around, and the lifestyle of the past is preserved as it was.
The footbath located in the center of Gassho Village is fantastic. It was very pleasant, especially in the cold of winter! Towels cost 200 yen, so if you're staying at a hot spring inn, it might be a good idea to bring the small towel you receive there!
Come to Gero Onsen to learn about the history of Gassho Village, and fall in love with Shirakawa-go
Gero Onsen Gassho Village is a tourist attraction that combines traditional Japanese culture, hot springs, and gourmet food.
Gero Onsen, along with Arima Onsen and Kusatsu Onsen, is known as one of the three major hot spring towns in Japan. Gero Onsen Gassho Village is not part of Gero Onsen Town, but it is located in the Gero Onsen area. Gero Onsen is a genuine natural hot spring where hot spring water with a temperature as high as 84 degrees gushes out from the ground. The water is weakly alkaline, simple in composition, colorless and transparent, accompanied by a light and soft aroma. Lightly covering the skin can make the skin as smooth as silk.
In Gero Onsen Gassho Village, you can visit various Shirakawa-go Gassho-style buildings, appreciate the culture and crafts of the Hida region, and taste local specialties. There is also a small museum in the village that displays local history and culture. You can also take a hot spring bath in the village. There are many hot spring facilities to choose from.
Opening hours: Sunday to Saturday from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm.
Ticket strategy: Admission ticket is 800 yen.
Address: 2369 Mori, Gero City, Gifu Prefecture.
Transportation strategy: Take a public bus from JR Gero Station for 6 minutes, and walk for about 25 minutes.

Gero Onsen Gassho Village is a village recreated by 10 gassho-style houses moved from places like Shirakawa Village, led by the 'Old Otu House', a nationally designated important cultural property of Japan. It is a precious open-air museum for understanding the lives of the residents at that time.
In the Gassho Village, the interior landscape of the old Iwasaki family (Folklore Museum), a tangible cultural property of Japan, and the old Toyama family (Itakura) are displayed. There are also workshops where you can participate in ceramic art or washi paper painting experiences, restaurants where you can taste Hida's delicacies, and the 'Four Seasons Forest' behind the mountain where you can enjoy cherry blossoms and autumn leaves. The Gassho Village, which still inherits the simple quality of Hida people, is a 'spiritual home' that makes people feel warm.
Every season of the year, it presents different scenery, cherry blossoms are in full bloom, grass is fragrant, autumn wind is dawn, winter snow is white. Whether it's wandering between various shrines or resting in different tea rooms, it's a great experience. You can also soak your feet in the Gassho foot bath to soothe your tired body.
Location: 2369 Mori, Gero City, Gifu Prefecture.
