Back in Kampot for the 6th time and it honestly still feels like home 🇰🇭 We didn’t even think twice… straight to Reatrey Oyster Seafood first 🦐 It’s just one of those places we always come back to. The seafood is sooo good every time 😋 After checking in at Sokchea Kampot Hotel, had a quick shower, went to Golden Hands Spa 💆♂️ really needed that massage after the drive... The evening was super chill... Just walking by the river, stopping by the giant seahorse 🐚 and watching the fountain ⛲️ Nothing fancy, just nice and relaxing... ✨ Next morning we went for our usual crab fried rice 🦀🍳 Still full of crab meat and super worth it for like $4–5 💵 The rice was a bit tough this time, maybe we got the last batch, but still good enough...😆 After breakfast, we skipped Bokor this time and went to Kep instead 🚗 First stop was Kep Crab Market and we kind of went all out… fried shrimp, squid, durian... 🦑🦐 Also grabbed crab and prawn curry from Kimly Seafood to takeaway 🥘 always a safe choice... Then we rented one of those bamboo platforms by the water for $10 🌊 honestly one of the best parts of the trip. I went to Preah Khan because of the famous “matcha pond”. That soft green water against the ancient stone ruins looks like a dream in photos 🍵✨🌿 Reality check… it was SO hot that day. The temple is quite big and you need to walk inside for a while to reach the pond. My parents couldn’t continue anymore and had to wait outside because the heat was too strong ☀️🥵 We reached the pond around 11AM and the lighting was very harsh. The strong backlight made my face turn dark in photos. The contrast between bright sky and shaded ruins was intense, so I had to edit the pictures a lot to balance everything 😅📸 But honestly, the vibe is still magical. During this period, there is less rain, and the temperature is more comfortable. 🚗 How to get there: It takes 20–30 minutes by tuk-tuk from Siem Reap to the temple. This is the most convenient way, but you can also choose a taxi or bike. 👕 What to wear: Make sure to cover your shoulders (this is a requirement for all temples). Apsaras (heavenly dancers): Over 3,000 unique depictions of apsaras are carved throughout the temple, each with her own distinctive smile, hairstyle, and adornments. They are often referred to as the "Eastern Mona Lisa." Apsaras are celestial dancers in Hindu and Buddhist mythology, and their representations in Angkor are the pinnacle of this image. According to legend, they emerged from the Churning of the Ocean of Milk (one of the central scenes depicted in Angkor's bas-reliefs). They served the gods, entertaining them with heavenly music and dance, and were also considered messengers between the worlds of gods and humans. The temple was dedicated to the god Vishnu, and the apsaras here are part of the magnificent decoration celebrating his abode. They also symbolized the harmony and perfection of the universe created by the gods. Khmer artisans created an idealized and highly detailed image. Here are its distinctive features: Face: Idealized, with a mysterious and serene "Khmer smile," often compared to the smile of the Mona Lisa. Headdress: Intricate, high three-tiered crown or diadem with floral motifs. Hairstyle: Hair neatly arranged, often with braids cascading from under the crown. Adornments: Massive earrings, necklaces, bracelets on arms and legs. There are so many that apsaras sometimes appear more adorned with jewelry than with fabric. Clothing: Traditional sampot skirt with rich pleated drapery, often with a triangular fabric end hanging in front. The torso is usually bare (which was customary in tropical culture). Often depicted in graceful dance poses, as if frozen in a moment. Many hold a lotus flower or perform a ritual hand gesture (mudra). Quantity: Around 1,850–2,000 apsara carvings are found in Angkor Wat, and no two are identical in detail. They cover almost all vertical surfaces. The best places to look for them are on the walls of the lower galleries, especially in the western part of the temple, on columns, and around window openings. Come closer and examine the details under different lighting conditions—reliefs appear especially dimensional in the morning and at sunset. Try to spot differences in the smiles, hairstyles, or adornments of two neighboring figures. The image of the apsara lives not only in stone.
