The Chongsheng Temple And The Three-Pagoda Culture Tourist Area

The Chongsheng Temple And The Three-Pagoda Culture Tourist Area

8.1

Dali City · 16.6 km from downtown

13.9k reviews

The Chongsheng Temple And The Three-Pagoda Culture Tourist Area is located 1.5 km north of Dali Ancient Town, serving as the royal temple during the Dali Kingdom period. With Erhai Lake to the east and Cangshan Mountain's Yinglue Peak to the west, the scenery here is exceptionally beautiful. The three pagodas were originally part of Chongsheng Temple. While the temple seen today is a reconstruction, the pagodas remain as millennia-old relics and a major highlight for visitors. The tour route begins at the attraction's main gate, where the three pagodas immediately come into view atop the central axis staircase. The large central pagoda, called Qianxun Pagoda, stands majestically with two smaller pagodas to its north and south, forming a grand tripartite layout. The three pagodas resemble the Small Wild Goose Pagoda in Xi'an. The perfect spot to photograph them is the "Three Pagodas Reflection Pool" in the Three Pagodas Reflection Park located diagonally behind them, where travelers can capture the pagodas and their reflections in the water. Many travelers take photos here as souvenirs. Walking around the pagodas and following the central axis inward, visitors can view Nanzhao and Dali Kingdom artifacts excavated during the pagodas' restoration at the cultural relics exhibition hall, admire the 16-ton Nanzhao Jianji Bell in the bell tower, see the Rain Copper Guanyin in the Rain Copper Guanyin Hall, and finally arrive at the Chongsheng Temple. The current Chongsheng Temple was rebuilt in 2005, boasting a grand scale that reflects the imperial monastery's grandeur during the Nanzhao and Dali periods. The temple houses over 10,000 dragon designs of various types, making it the temple with the most dragon depictions in China. Additionally, it features one of the country's largest cowhide drums, measuring 3.1 m in diameter and made from a single piece of cowhide, which is worth seeing.

Erhai Lake

8.1

4.6/5

8.2k reviews

Erhai Lake lies quietly at the foot of the Cangshan Mountains and east of Dali Ancient Town, serving as Yunnan's second-largest plateau freshwater lake after Dianchi Lake. Stretching narrowly over 40 km from north to south, its silhouette resembles both a human ear and a crescent moon. The Bai people traditionally call large lakes "seas," and with its vast expanse and sea-like waves when winds rise, it earned this romantic name. The nineteen peaks of Cangshan stand like a screen to the west, reflecting the lake's shimmering waters—a scenery long praised as "silver Cangshan and jade Erhai." This is also the setting for the "Erhai moon," one of Dali's famed "wind, flower, snow, and moon" four scenic wonders. The classic way to explore Erhai Lake is riding or hiking along the lakeside ecological corridor, where you can stop anytime along the 100 km shoreline: Longkan Dock on the western shore features boardwalks extending into the water and rows of dawn redwoods, making it a popular sunrise spot. Further north, Panxi S-bend's waterfront trail curves gracefully along the lake, with a solitary tree in the water and pastoral shores serving as iconic photo backdrops. Taking a cruise offers distant views of Little Putuo Island and a chance to visit Nanzhao Folk Island, often accompanied by Bai ethnic tea ceremonies and dances. Jinsuo Island in the southern lake has been home to Bai fishermen for generations, preserving both village charm and Benzhu faith traditions. During the summer Torch Festival, lakeside villagers toss pine resin powder, creating fiery sparks, while the legend-linked Shuahai Festival—honoring Lady Bojie and Duan Chicheng's serpent-slaying tale—keeps Bai bravery alive by the lakeshore. To slow down, head to Shuanglang Ancient Town by the lake and pick a waterfront café to spend half a day. At dawn, wait for the sunrise on the western shore; in the evening, watch the sunset paint the Cangshan Mountains golden-red from the eastern shore—riding along the lakeshore, cruising back to gaze at the mountains from the lake center, or simply sitting by the water—these experiences perfectly piece together different facets of Erhai Lake.

Dali Ancient City

7.5

Dali City · 14.3 km from downtown

9.7k reviews

Dali Ancient City is nestled against the Cangshan Mountain and faces the Erhai Lake. This area was once the capital of the Nanzhao Kingdom and the Dali Kingdom. The preserved city layout mainly inherits from the reconstruction of the Dali Prefecture during the Ming Dynasty. Bai ethnic courtyards with white walls and blue tiles spread out along the chessboard-like streets. Locals spend their leisure time gardening, basking in the sun, and chatting, creating a slow-paced lifestyle that distinguishes this ancient city from many imitation historic districts. You can start your exploration from the south gate tower during the day, where the characters "Dali" on the wall serve as a popular photo backdrop. Climbing the tower offers a panoramic view of dark-tiled rooftops and distant Cangshan Mountain. Fuxing Road, extending north from the south gate, is the ancient town's central pedestrian street, lined with shops in Ming and Qing styles displaying marble carvings, tie-dye fabrics, silverware, and ethnic costumes. Wuhua Tower at the intersection, originally built during the Nanzhao period and rebuilt several times, remains a landmark of the town. Nearby, the Honglongjing area features clear streams flowing along the streets, making it a pleasant spot to rest when tired. The Renmin Road area is packed with snack stalls, fruit vendors, and handicraft shops, where you can sample local flavors like grilled rushan cheese, cold chicken rice noodles, and Xizhou baba. As night falls, another scene unfolds. Bars and cafés along Foreigner Street (originally Huguo Road) and Renmin Road light up one after another, with live music drifting from the shops to the streets. The town seamlessly transitions from daytime leisure to nighttime vibrancy within the same ancient city.

There are also many viewing points and rest stops along the way where you can stop to take pictures, rest, and taste local food. Cycling in Dali not only exercises your body, but also allows you to enjoy the beautiful natural scenery and rich cultural landscapes. Whether it is cycling around Erhai Lake, cycling in the countryside, or cycling in the streets of the ancient city, it can bring unforgettable experiences and good memories.

Gantong Ropeway

7.3

4.4/5

1.1k reviews

The Gantong Ropeway is one of the three cable cars on Cangshan mountain in Dali, located at the foot of Shengying peak and adjacent to Gantong temple and Jizhao nunnery. With a total length of over 2,000 m, the cable car starts from the station near Gantong temple and ascends to the mid-mountain station near Qingbi stream. It operates with enclosed transparent cabins, each accommodating six passengers, offering a smooth ride and expansive views. During the journey, you can admire the pine-covered valleys on Cangshan's slopes and, on clear days, overlook Erhai lake and the outline of Dali ancient town. The upper station exit marks the southern starting point of the Yudai cloud trail. Walking north along this gentle mid-mountain plank path, you'll reach Cangshan grand canyon and Qingbi stream, where the water forms tiered emerald-green pools in the canyon. Further north leads to Qilongnv pool. Compared to the other two cable cars, this route allows access to Cangshan's mid-mountain area without strenuous climbing, making it suitable for travelers with average fitness who want to enjoy valley scenery comfortably. Before or after the ascent, you can conveniently visit Gantong temple and Jizhao nunnery at the mountain base. Note that Cangshan's weather changes frequently, with windy and cooler conditions at mid-mountain, so bringing a jacket is recommended.

Xizhou

7.2

4.5/5

1.3k reviews

Xizhou is located 18 km north of Dali Ancient Town, with Cangshan Mountain to the west and Erhai Lake to the east. It preserves a large number of Bai ethnic residences and is also the birthplace of Xizhou baba. Wandering through the ancient town, you will see seniors in Bai ethnic clothing, small shops selling baba, and Bai ethnic residences, all brimming with rich Bai ethnic charm. Xizhou at a glance The Gate of Justice is the west gate of Xizhou Ancient Town, and entering from here leads to the old street of the ancient town. A few hundred m inward from the west gate, there is a 500-year-old banyan tree so thick that it takes several adults to encircle it, and it is considered a landmark of Xizhou Ancient Town. Not far into the ancient town, there is a Ziyun Mountain Temple. The existing buildings were constructed in the Qing Dynasty and look quite dilapidated. Some local elderly people often gather here to bask in the sun. Further in is Sifang Street, a small square surrounded by numerous shops and the center of the entire town. Sightseeing in Xizhou usually starts from Sifang Street. Sifang Street is the birthplace of the famous snack Xizhou baba, and the flavor here is very authentic. Visit bai ethnic residences Bai ethnic residences are a major feature of Xizhou. The residences here span various periods, and the ones people most often visit are the Yan and Yang family residences. The Yan family residence is located at the southwest corner of Sifang Street, and the architecture is a typical Bai courtyard layout of "three fangs and one screen wall" and "four courtyards with five skylights." The Yan family was the foremost of Xizhou's "four great families" in the old days, and here you can experience the grandeur of the Yan family's former wealth. Inside the residence, you can also drink the distinctive "three-course tea." If you are interested in architecture and ethnic culture and want to quickly learn about Bai ethnic residences, you can buy a ticket and go in. Yang Pinxiang's residence is located east of Xizhou, and its layout is much the same as the Yan family residence. Particularly worth mentioning is the Yang family's exquisitely crafted wood carvings, and the gatehouse is especially ornate and elegant. Tour Hai Shi Peninsula Additionally, it is worth mentioning the Haishé Peninsula east of Xizhou Ancient Town. Head east toward Erhai Lake for 3-4 km to reach Haixin Pavilion, then continue a few hundred meters further to Jingui Temple, and you will see a green oasis about 100 m wide and roughly 1 km long, resembling a jade hairpin inserted into the shimmering Erhai Lake. Locals call it Haishé. There are very few visitors here, and the scenery is exceptionally beautiful—blue skies, white clouds, green trees, and clear ripples, along with waterbirds appearing among them, giving a feeling of blending into nature, and the photos you take look as beautiful as paintings. Recommended things to do Xizhou is not far from Dali Ancient Town. If you are staying in Dali Ancient Town, you can get there by bus or bicycle, and a day trip of walking and exploring is enough to go there and back. You can also choose to stay one night in Xizhou and continue to visit Butterfly Spring the next day.

Yang Li Ping Art Space

7.2

5.0/5

1.3k reviews

Yang Li Ping Art Space is located at the northern end of Yuji Island in Shuanglang Town, Dali, Yunnan. Built in 2000, it was originally the private residence of dancer Yang Liping facing Erhai Lake. Designed by Bai ethnic artist Zhao Qing with the concept of "harmonious coexistence with nature," it blends the charm of Bai folk houses with modern design. The entire structure is built on reefs, combining local bluestone with steel frames, and the building extends toward Erhai Lake, appearing to float above the water from a distance. Inside, multiple split levels undulate, with most rooms facing Cangshan Mountain and Erhai Lake. A century-old banyan tree grows through the central hall, symbolizing the coexistence of tree and architecture, creating a highly recognizable scene here. Today, this private residence has been opened to the public as an art space. Inside, it displays paintings by artist Ye Yongqing and preserves props from Yang Liping's dance drama "Pingtan Impression," as well as scenes from her former daily life. The spacious terrace faces Erhai Lake, offering a view of Nanzhao Folklore Island opposite. Visits require advance reservations and entry in batches; travelers planning to come are advised to arrange their itinerary in advance.

4.6/5

3.1k reviews

Shuanglang Ancient Town is situated on the northeastern shore of Erhai Lake in Dali City, where crystal-clear waters meet the majestic Cangshan Mountain's nineteen peaks. This area encapsulates the finest landscapes of the Cangshan-Erhai region and stands as one of the most iconic Bai ethnic settlements along the lake. On sunny days, sunlight filters through the clouds, casting mesmerizing reflections on the water with the undulating Cangshan range as a backdrop—a dream shot for photography enthusiasts. The heart of Shuanglang is Yuji Island, named for its resemblance to a jade table and connected to the ancient town by Yuji Bridge. The island features artistic landmarks like Yang Liping's Sun Palace and Moon Palace, making it an unmissable spot for enjoying Erhai Lake's breathtaking views. Shuanglang is not only a paradise of natural scenery but also a model of Bai ethnic culture blending with modern art. Perfect for strolling, sightseeing, savoring local cuisine, and staying in seaside homestays, it offers an immersive experience of poetic living where "mountains mirror human joy, and waters reflect enduring affection."
