Dianchi Lake

4.7/5
10.6k reviews
Dianchi Lake, also known as Kunming Lake, is the sixth-largest freshwater lake in China. Its expansive and magnificent surface has earned it the reputation of "five hundred li of Dianchi Lake" since ancient times. As one of the larger plateau lakes in Yunnan Province, Dianchi Lake is surrounded by numerous waterfront parks and wetlands, making it an unmissable stop when visiting Kunming. Every winter, large flocks of black-headed gulls fly all the way from Siberia to Dianchi Lake to spend the winter. This spectacle has occurred faithfully every year since 1985, and feeding the black-headed gulls along the lakeshore has become a highly popular winter experience in Kunming. Strolling along the sightseeing road on the east bank of Dianchi Lake is a great way to experience the lake up close. On one side is the vast, misty expanse of water, with the Western Hills stretching across the distance; in winter, the sightseeing road is especially lively, as residents and visitors alike stop by the lakeside to interact with the black-headed gulls. For a different perspective, you can take the cableway from the lakeside to Dragon Gate in the Western Hills and look down from above, taking in the entire Dianchi Lake at a glance. In the Caohai area at the northern end, you can also take a boat out on the lake and experience its vastness from the water. In recent years, through sustained governance, the water quality and lakeside ecology of Dianchi Lake have gradually improved, the wetland views along the lake are also continuously being restored, and the sightseeing environment has been significantly enhanced compared to the past.Kunming · 23.7 km from downtown

Stone Forest Scenic Area

8.7
4.7/5
18.8k reviews
The Stone Forest Scenic Area is located in Shilin County, Kunming, and is one of the key attractions in the city. This scenic area showcases typical karst landforms, featuring stone peaks, pinnacles, sinkholes, and underground rivers. The towering rock formations take on various shapes—sword-like, pagoda-like, mushroom-like, and more—creating a breathtaking and fantastical landscape. The Stone Forest Scenic Area is divided into several widely spaced sections, with the Greater and Lesser Stone Forest attractions at its core. The Naigu Stone Forest is located approx. 12 km north of the main attractions, while the Dadie Waterfall scenic area sits approx. 29 km southwest. The Changhu Lake area is positioned 26 km southeast of the main site. When visitors refer to touring the Stone Forest, they typically mean exploring the Greater and Lesser Stone Forest sections. The Greater and Lesser Shilin are located in the same area. After purchasing tickets at the main entrance and walking along the path for 20 minutes, you'll find the smaller and more gently sloped Lesser Shilin Scenic Area on your left. Amidst the dense cluster of peaks stands the famous Ashima Stone, where the majestic karst formations resemble a graceful Yi ethnic maiden named Ashima, seemingly waving to visitors—a favorite photo spot for travelers. Beyond the striking Ashima, the Lesser Shilin area features other captivating views like the Steed and Pillar Supporting the Sky, each with unique shapes. This is where your imagination is put to the test. If you find your imagination lacking, we recommend hiring a guide who can offer fresh perspectives on these remarkable formations. As you drive leisurely along the highway, you'll encounter a series of remarkable rock formations lining the roadside—the Tang Monk Stone, Stone Prison, Phoenix Combing Its Wings, and Lingzhi Mushroom Rock—each vividly lifelike and exquisitely crafted by nature's artistry, presenting their unique postures to showcase Earth's wondrous creations. Strolling along the pathway, you'll unexpectedly arrive at the Great Stone Forest Scenic Area. After marveling at wonders like "Two Birds Sharing Food," "Rhinoceros Gazing at the Moon," "Lotus Peak," "Shilin Grand View," and "Stone Screen," you might feel slightly fatigued. Take a peaceful break at Lion Pavilion while admiring the inverted peaks reflected in Lion Pool across the way. After prolonged exposure to these karst formations, visual fatigue may set in—making it the perfect moment to shift perspectives. Board a cruise on Shilin Lake, where mountain vistas and water scenery converge into one breathtaking panorama, dissolving all stress and worries. If you prefer not to walk, electric carts driven by Yi ethnic women shuttle between attractions and stop upon request. You can still marvel at the wonders of the Stone Forest Scenic Area, and some friendly drivers may even share interesting local anecdotes along the way. Naigu Stone Forest, also known as New Stone Forest or Mozhai Stone Forest, is located 13 km north of the Stone Forest Scenic Area. It features a landscape composed of stone formations, Baiyun Lake, Shifeng Mountain, and Yougu Xianpu Waterfall. Compared to the Stone Forest Scenic Area, this site offers a distinct style. The towering gray-black stone pillars here are densely packed, resembling castles, towers, and mushrooms. The rugged, primitive rock formations surge skyward like waves, creating a majestic atmosphere. Walking through these dark peaks feels like stepping into a primeval world.Shilin · 6.1 km from downtown

Yunnan Nationalities Village

8.2
4.3/5
15.4k reviews
Yunnan Nationalities Village is located on the shores of Dianchi Lake in the southwestern suburbs of Kunming. It is a themed attraction that showcases the diverse ethnic cultures of Yunnan. Within the park, villages of more than ten ethnic minorities—including the Dai, Bai, Yi, Wa, Naxi, Tibetan, and Hani—have been reconstructed according to their traditional architectural styles. The residential architecture, religious beliefs, and folk customs of each ethnic group are concentrated in one place, allowing visitors to experience the distinctive cultures of multiple ethnic groups in Yunnan within a single day. Upon entering the attraction, the Dai Village is the first thing that comes into view. The village is surrounded by water on three sides, with lush tropical and subtropical plants providing shade, and stilted Dai bamboo houses scattered throughout. Walking along the red sandstone path, you can see a Myanmar-style Buddhist temple and a towering white pagoda. The white pagoda is a scaled replica of the Yunyan Pagoda in Yingjiang, Dehong, with dozens of smaller pagodas clustered around the main pagoda, and wind chimes on the pagodas ringing softly in the breeze. Boat tours are also available near the Dai Village. The Yi village is located on the west side of the National Unity Square and is one of the larger villages in the park. In the center of the village's Sun Calendar Square stands a totem stone pillar, carved with patterns such as the sun, flames, and tiger stripes. Surrounding it are scattered stone balls symbolizing the movement of the sun and moon, reflecting the Yi people's calendrical wisdom based on the sun as a reference. Since ancient times, the Yi people have worshipped the tiger as a totem. At the village entrance, there is a tiger-shaped rockery and a relief wall featuring three tigers. The village also restores the Yi people's distinctive flat-roofed earthen buildings and a traditional liquor-brewing workshop, showcasing the traditional production and daily life scenes of the Yi people. The Bai ethnic village is renowned for its traditional dwellings, whose architecture blends Han and Bai construction techniques. The three white pagodas in the village are scaled-down replicas of the Three Pagodas of Dali and are quite striking. The Bai village also displays butterfly specimens, and visitors can experience the Bai "three-course tea" — bitter tea, sweet tea, and aftertaste tea served in succession, symbolizing the life philosophy of enduring hardship before enjoying sweetness. In addition to the villages mentioned above, the park also features villages of the Miao, Mosuo, Yao, Naxi, and other ethnic groups, each with its own unique architectural style and cultural displays. Regular ethnic song and dance performances are often held on the plazas of each village, and the park also hosts large-scale ethnic cultural shows such as "Call of the Plateau." During traditional ethnic festivals such as the Dai Water Festival and the Yi Torch Festival, the attraction also holds corresponding celebrations, making it a great time to experience ethnic festival culture.Kunming · 9 km from downtown

Yunnan Provincial Museum

4.8/5
2.1k reviews
The Yunnan Provincial Museum is a comprehensive museum showcasing Yunnan's history and ethnic culture, housing over 200,000 cultural relics (sets), with strengths in ancient Dian Kingdom bronzeware, Nanzhao and Dali Kingdom Buddhist statues, and historical calligraphy and paintings. The building itself is distinctive: its reddish-brown exterior is composed of irregular stone prism shapes, resembling a stone forest rising from the ground, making it memorable even before entering the exhibition halls. The permanent exhibition follows a chronological sequence, with six themed halls—"Ancient Yunnan," "Dawn of civilization," "Dominance in southern China," "Land of fragrant Buddhism," "Frontier expansion and defense," and "A century of upheaval"—taking visitors from prehistoric times to the modern era, offering a condensed overview of Yunnan's history. Located in a multi-ethnic border region, the artifacts here differ markedly from those in inland museums: bronzeware depicts vivid scenes of animal combat, rituals, and warfare, while the Dian Kingdom's unique shell containers resemble lidded bronze "piggy banks." The Buddhist statues bear the distinct regional style of the Nanzhao and Dali Kingdoms, warranting closer attention. The museum's crown jewels deserve dedicated viewing time: the Warring States period bronze ox-tiger table, unearthed from the Lijiashan tombs in Jiangchuan, features a small ox hidden beneath a large ox and a fierce tiger biting the ox's tail, earning the saying "In the north, there's the galloping horse treading on a flying swallow; in the south, there's the ox-tiger bronze table." The Dali Kingdom gilded Avalokitesvara statue with silver halo from the Qianxun Pagoda of Chongsheng Temple in Dali has a unique golden form. Other treasures include Song Dynasty Guo Xi's "Travelers among mountains and streams," Yuan Dynasty Huang Gongwang's "Visiting Dai in Shanxi," and the Ming Dynasty gem-inlaid golden crown. After the visit, you can stop by the nearby Guandu ancient town, making it possible to explore both sites in a day.Kunming · 10.3 km from downtown

The hundreds of steps along the way, as well as the reliefs, stone carvings, and caves visible throughout the route, were all meticulously crafted by Qing Dynasty artisans using primitive tools. The entire project took 72 years to complete and is truly spectacular. The Datian Pavilion is the highest point of the Dragon Gate, featuring a dedicated viewing platform where visitors can overlook the vast 500-li Dianchi Lake. Beyond the viewing platform, the Lingxu Pavilion awaits, which sits at an even higher altitude than the Datian Pavilion and offers a more expansive view. However, the path there is notably open and flat. After the visit, you can take the Dragon Gate Cable Car back to the Taihua Mountain Villa halfway up the mountain. Following the mountain path beside the villa, a short walk downhill will bring you toNie Er's tomb. Location: Haigeng Park/No. 16 Hubin Road ↔ Xishan Longmen (West Mountain Dragon Gate), not near the old street, you have to go to the Dianchi Lake area. Experience: Crossing the lake + climbing the mountain, about 20 minutes one way, views of Dianchi Lake, Sleeping Beauty Mountain, and city scenery, great for taking photos. Ticket Price: One way about 59-60 RMB, round trip about 98-100 RMB. Advantages: Easy for lazy people to climb West Mountain, no climbing required, unique views; seagulls in winter. Disadvantages: Stops during strong winds/thunderstorms; long queues during peak season; separate ticket/walking required for Longmen after climbing the mountain; don't confuse with the "Xishan Longmen Cableway". Conclusion: First time in Kunming, taking the Dianchi-Xishan route → worth it; if just exploring the old street → not worth a special trip.

I visited this well-known 5A scenic spot several years ago. I bought Ashima cigarettes there for 260 yuan a carton, but I heard they've been discontinued for a few years. There were many vendors selling ginseng fruit in the parking lot, the cheapest being 10 yuan for five bags. I bought quite a few.

The children saw many animals, and the sightseeing bus was very convenient, with no long waits. The fox's eyes were so heartbreaking; I really wanted to take it home, haha. Hornbills, giraffes, raccoons, swans, baboons, pandas, tigers, red-crowned cranes, pelicans, turkeys, ostriches, macaws, brown bears… so many animals! It's definitely worth a visit.

It's definitely worth taking children and the elderly, as it saves a lot of energy. The Haigeng Dam and the Ethnic Village are nearby. I was lucky to go in mid-to-late October, and the first flocks of seagulls had already arrived. Apparently, they arrived half a month earlier than usual. Even though it was just the first flock, I felt it was already very beautiful.

I feel like I've only explored less than 5% of the Xishan Scenic Area, haha. There are definitely some special forces members in Kunming's Xishan Scenic Area! I had to catch the high-speed train to Dali this afternoon, otherwise I could have spent more time exploring. While taking the bus and sightseeing vehicle up the mountain, there were also many hiking routes. Seeing many signs and steps, it seems there are many other things to explore and experience besides Longmen. There was a senior citizen tour group from Guangdong, and their guide was saying, "Climbing Longmen will increase your worth a hundredfold!" Well, that strengthened my resolve to climb it! It definitely lived up to expectations. Although the climb wasn't long or too tiring, some steps were very steep, with angles of over 60 degrees. And the various caves and temples gave one the feeling that there were immortals and hermits hidden in the mountains—very mysterious and awe-inspiring. There weren't many people there early in the morning. It wasn't until I took the cable car down that I noticed a few people boarding, and very few people were going down. Finally, I hope this trip will really double my wealth! Everything goes smoothly, haha!

Colorful Yunnan is a very cost-effective amusement park. Families, the elderly and children have a great time. The prices are also very reasonable. Compared to Universal Studios, Happy Valley and Fantawild, it is much more affordable. I will definitely come again!

Kunming Old Street is a historical and cultural area comprised of over a dozen streets and alleys, including Guanghua Street, Wenming Street, Jingxing Street, and Qianwang Street. Located in the heart of Kunming, it is one of the few remaining century-old streets in the "Spring City." Here, cobblestone streets, Republican-era Western-style buildings, and traditional residences intertwine, carrying nearly 900 years of urban life and atmosphere, making it a perfect spot for a leisurely stroll and photography.

Located in Xishan District, Kunming City, Yunnan Province, China, the Haigeng Dam is a major engineering project connecting Dianchi Lake with the mainland and a landmark of Kunming. Haigeng Dam not only serves important flood control and drainage functions, but also attracts numerous visitors with its beautiful natural scenery and relaxing atmosphere. From the Haigeng Dam, one can admire the vast expanse of Dianchi Lake, shimmering in the sunlight, the water and sky blending into one, resembling a moving ink painting. In the distance, Dianchi Lake ripples with emerald green waves, occasionally soaring above, adding a vibrant and lively atmosphere. The dam's edges are shaded by lush trees, and there are walking paths and rest areas along the way, allowing visitors to stroll, feel the breeze, and enjoy the tranquil natural atmosphere. The Haigeng Dam presents a different beauty in different seasons. In spring, peach blossoms, cherry blossoms, and other flowers bloom in a dazzling display of color. In summer, the lake is lush and green, its waters emerald green and clear. In autumn, the leaves turn yellow, adding a golden warmth. In winter, mist occasionally lingers, adding a sense of mystery. Especially in the early morning or evening, when the setting sun shines on Dianchi Lake, the lake's surface shimmers with a golden glow, and the sky transforms into vibrant shades of orange, red, purple, and blue, creating a magnificent natural landscape. At these times, Haigeng Dam becomes a prime location for photography and leisure, a place that invites you to linger. In short, Haigeng Dam, with its vast expanse of water, rich natural landscapes, and tranquil atmosphere, is a rare and beautiful part of Kunming's scenic landscape.
