Mina was fluent and detailed in her explanations of the summer palace. I was lucky as the only tour participant, She suggested meeting earlier in order to avoid the weekend crowds which proved to be a good idea. She also gave good historical context on how the palace and grounds were constructed and used and offered additional tips for exploring the grounds after our tour ended.

Julie our guide was excellent. She told us all about the summer palace and answered any other questions we had about china. She went out of her way to get us somewhere to leave our luggage and got us a taxi for our train when we were running late and hadn’t WeChat. Highly recommended! The tour includes information about the wall, an entrance ticket, and roundtrip transportation from Dongzhimen Station. Please note! A guide will not accompany you to the wall (they are not necessary). You must purchase cable car/sled tickets separately, or you can buy them from the guide on the bus (they are the same price). There are two routes to choose from: the red route from the 14th to the 20th towers - the most beautiful views, an uphill climb, and a roundtrip indoor funicular ride (140 yuan); the green route from the 6th to the 1st towers - the views are also beautiful, but not as breathtaking, an open funicular ride, and a sled/funnel ride (140 yuan). You can also combine them! I personally chose to only take the red route on the closed funicular and walk from the 14th to the 19th tower (I didn't have enough strength to go any further), then the return route from the 19th to the 6th tower and a sled ride! It cost 200 yuan. The whole journey took me 3.5 hours. I want to express my deepest gratitude to the guide, Maxim; he explained everything in detail, gave advice, and answered the group's questions. Thank you for the trip and the great atmosphere!

Mary reached out the day before via WhatsApp and answered my logistic questions. Overall I’m very happy I joined her tour. She is patient, upbeat, and explained well without being overwhelming. Perhaps I’m out of shape, but this ~5 hours walking tour was intense during the last hour or so. Be sure to wear comfiest shoes and bundled up! Also I’m glad Mary’s notes did mention bringing drinks and snacks with you. The snack shops inside the Forbidden City were too long to wait.
