Traveling solo, I was completely intimidated by all the Egypt guides I'd read online. With trepidation, I booked a day tour, and it completely changed my expectations. My guide, a middle-aged man, was incredibly enthusiastic and professional, filling me in on Egyptian history. He explained he'd been a Chinese-speaking tour guide for over 20 years, welcoming numerous Chinese tourists. His proud expression was truly endearing. At the end of the trip, I tipped him and the driver $10 each, which was well worth it. Cairo is shabby, but not as scary as the guides suggest. The driver and guide the travel agency arranged for me were truly wonderful people!★
