First, regarding the benefits, eSIM's greatest appeal is its high convenience. There's no need to replace a physical SIM card; simply scan a QR code or tap a few times on an app to activate your plan, dramatically simplifying internet access when traveling abroad. A major benefit is being able to connect immediately after arrival, eliminating the need to search for a SIM card. Furthermore, since multiple plans can be stored on a single device, you can use separate numbers for work and personal use on the same smartphone.
Many also consider eSIM to be superior in terms of security. Because it cannot be removed or inserted like a physical SIM card, it's less susceptible to misuse if lost or stolen, and the ability to remotely disable it provides peace of mind. Another benefit cited is that eliminating the need for physical cards reduces plastic usage and packaging, making it more environmentally friendly.
However, it's not all good. First, because eSIM is still a relatively new technology, some complain that it's only compatible with a limited number of models and carriers. Many older smartphones and budget models, in particular, are not compatible, making it unusable in some cases.
Furthermore, not all carriers in all countries and regions support eSIM, so depending on your destination, you may not be able to find a plan or only select carriers.
