The Hanging Coffins of the Bo are known as a unique wonder of the Bashu region. The core of the Hanging Coffins of the Bois located at Matangba, southwest of Luobiao Town in Gong County, and Sumawan on the north bank of the Dengjia River inHaitang Village, Caoying Township. Second, the cave-cutting method, where holes are chiseled into the cliff face to place the coffins. Third, the natural method, which utilizes cracks in the cliff face to place the coffins. The bodies inside the coffins are wrapped in linen, with burial objects placed alongside them. The cliff faces of thehanging coffinsoften feature many red painted murals, which are rich in content, with bold lines, concise composition, and vivid imagery. Their specific meaning and even the purpose of thehanging coffinsremain unknown.Gong County · 46.9 km from downtown

Southen Sichuan Bamboo Sea is located in Yibin, southern Sichuan. Its continuous expanse of emerald bamboo covers more than twenty rugged ridges and over five hundred peaks. It is known as the "ocean of bamboo" and is listed alongside the dinosaur fossils, the Stone Forest, and the hanging coffins as one of the "four wonders of southern Sichuan." More than fifty types of bamboo grow in the forest; in addition to common varieties like moso bamboo, water bamboo, and ci bamboo, there are also rare species such as black bamboo, Buddha's belly bamboo, and mandarin duck bamboo. The bamboo forest scenes in the movie "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" were filmed here. Most travelers enter from the west gate of the attraction, first passing through the Southen Sichuan Bamboo Sea Museum, where finely crafted bamboo carvings and woven artworks are displayed and worth a closer look. Then take the cable car for a gradual ascent from the valley floor, with bamboo waves rolling beneath your feet. The upper cable car station is located near Guanhai Tower and Emerald Corridor. From Guanhai Tower, the view encompasses countless emerald ridges. Nearby, Emerald Corridor features a several-hundred-meter-long red sandstone path flanked by dense bamboo shade, with sunlight filtering through the leaves—a classic photo spot in the attraction. There are several farmhouse restaurants near Guanhai Tower where you can take a break. The signature "all-bamboo banquet" features dishes made with bamboo shoots and bamboo fungus, offering a fresh and light flavor that's perfect for savoring slowly after a tiring walk.Changning · 29.2 km from Gong County

Hejiangmen is a large wharf in Yibin City, which can be directly navigable with Chongqing, Leshan, Yunnan and other places. The Jinsha River, the Minjiang River, the Yangtze River, and the three rivers meet here. Hejiangmen used to be one of the main water and land terminals in Yibin. Standing at the Hejiang Gate, the river flowing slowly on the left and the water like daisy is the Minjiang River, and the river with turbulent and yellow water on the right is the Jinsha River. into the East China Sea. On the night of Mid-Autumn Festival, the bright moon shines high in the sky, the river is calm and the waves are calm, and the two moons in the river are shining brightly, one bright and one dark, which is a rare scene in the world, called: Sanjiang Mouth Moon. Therefore, the place is where the three rivers meet, so Hejiangmen is also called Sanjiangkou. The Yangtze River is called the Yangtze River from here, so Yibin City has the reputation of the first city on the Yangtze River. In 2001, Hejiangmen built a landmark square on the side of the intersection of Jinsha River and Minjiang River, and built a fountain, archway and other landscapes.Yibin · 37.4 km from Gong County

Huangguoshu Scenic Area

4.6/5
40.1k reviews
The Huangguoshu Scenic Area is located in Anshun, Guizhou, centered around the Huangguoshu Waterfall. Surrounded by deep gorges, dense vegetation, and dotted with limestone caves and stone forests, it is a typical karst landscape area. The waterfall's name originates from the locally abundant "Huangguoshu" (Ficus virens). Ming Dynasty traveler Xu Xiake visited and documented this site, contributing to its fame. The scenic area primarily consists of three main sections: the Great Waterfall, Tianxing Bridge, and Doupotang. Most travelers follow the sequence of Doupotang, Tianxing Bridge, and finally the Great Waterfall, saving the most spectacular view for last. The grand waterfall has a drop of nearly 80 m and a width of over 100 m. The Baishui River plunges from the cliff top into Rhinoceros Pool, creating a vast mist. Multiple viewing platforms around it allow visitors to experience its grandeur, wonder, steepness, and beauty from different angles—above, below, front, back, left, and right. A particularly unique experience lies behind the waterfall: a 100 m long Water Curtain Cave runs horizontally through its midsection, featuring cave windows and halls. Reaching through a window, one can touch the cascading water. The cave served as the filming location for the Water Curtain Cave in the 1986 TV series Journey to the West. Due to the heavy humidity inside, bringing a raincoat in advance is recommended. Tianxing Bridge is renowned for its harmonious blend of rocks, water, trees, and caves—where rocks rise from the water, caves hide within rocks, and trees stand beside caves. The stepping stones along the path are engraved with dates, allowing travelers to find their own "birthday stone." The attraction is divided into upper and lower sections. Many travelers turn back after completing the upper section, missing the Silver Chain Waterfall in the lower part—where water cascades like silver chains into a funnel-shaped pool, the highlight of Tianxing Bridge. The Doupotang waterfall is located approx. 1 km upstream from the grand waterfall. With a width of over 100 m at its crest, the water spreads out smoothly like a beaded curtain. During the high-water season, its deep roar earns it the nickname "roaring waterfall." The scene of the four pilgrims leading their horse across the river in the 1986 TV series Journey to the West was filmed here. In summer and fall, the waterfalls are full and powerful, while in winter and spring, the flow becomes gentler, offering different viewing experiences. Nearby, visitors can also enjoy local snacks like sticky rice, love tofu, and Anshun spring rolls.China · Zhenning

Mount Qingcheng

4.6/5
34k reviews
Mount Qingcheng has long been praised as "Tranquil Paradise under Heaven," with its peaks encircling like city walls—hence the name. Legend says Zhang Daoling of the Eastern Han dynasty established Taoism here in a thatched hut, making it the ancestral home of Celestial Master Taoism, where temple incense still burns today. The mountain divides into front and back sections: the front features Taoist temples and cultural relics, commonly referred to as "Mount Qingcheng" by most travelers; the back excels in natural landscapes like pools, waterfalls, streams, and gorges, making it ideal for hiking and summer retreats. The highlights of Qianshan are concentrated. Starting from Jianfu Palace beside the mountain gate, follow the ancient stone steps upward past Natural Picture, Tianshi Cave, Chaoyang Cave, and Shangqing Palace, with the summit's Laojun Pavilion as the final vantage point. Tianshi Cave, also called Changdao Temple, is one of the mountain's largest Taoist complexes—its front courtyard holds a millennium-old ginkgo tree allegedly planted by Zhang Daoling, while the cliffside Ink-throwing Trough behind is said to be where the celestial master drew mountains with vermilion ink. Painting master Zhang Daqian once resided at Shangqing Palace, styling himself "Guest of Qingcheng." At the mountain's base, Yuecheng Lake's mirror-like waters add ethereal beauty to the lush greenery. The rear mountain entrance is the quaint Tai'an ancient town. From here, the trails connect Wulong gully and Feiquan gully into a loop, with views like Misty spring triple pools, Double spring water curtain cave, and Hundred-zhang long bridge accompanied by the sounds of water and shaded woods. The Longyin gorge walkway built along cliffs overlooks rushing streams below, making it a dedicated hiking route. The mountain stays pleasantly cool even in midsummer. The front mountain and back mountain entrances are not connected, usually requiring separate itineraries. Most 1-day tours choose one of the two. The front mountain's main temples can be visited in half a day, while the back mountain loop is longer and requires reserving most of a day. Travelers wishing to see the sunrise often ascend the mountain a day early, staying overnight at mountain temples for convenient morning viewing.China · Dujiangyan

This was my second time driving to Shunan Bamboo Sea. The stunning bamboo scenery, world-class beautiful environment, pure psychological healing, fresh air with negative oxygen ions, the valley where you can forget your worries, the babbling brooks, the misty mountains, and the dreamlike beauty of driving along the forest trails—it's like a dream, a mesmerizing experience, a fairyland, a painting—a place you should cherish forever!

Cute animals to see everywhere but the amount of people pushing and jostling made the experience pretty bad. Would recommend to go very early to avoid the crowd and see the pandas in action

Hejiangmen, known as Yibin's "city living room," is where the Jinsha River and Minjiang River converge to form the mighty Yangtze River. As night falls, the river surface sparkles, reflecting off the ancient city walls and modern lights, showcasing Yibin's blend of the past and present and its vibrant urban life. It's an excellent spot to experience Yibin's historical heritage and urban charm.

We had three people with us – two elderly people and one child – and we only visited the falls. The return trip was quite convenient and not tiring. (At the falls exit) There are private shops on the right-hand side offering free stamps, and there's also a food street outside the exit with a post office and stamp services.

"Qingcheng Mountain, the most secluded place under heaven," truly lives up to its name and is well worth a visit. On the front mountain, explore the ancient sites and rich Taoist culture. Ancient trees reach for the sky, and red-walled Taoist temples are nestled among the dense forest, creating a strong atmosphere. Cable cars and boats are available, making the route relatively easy. On the back mountain, seek tranquility and enjoy the pristine natural scenery. The path is lined with streams, waterfalls, and boardwalks, with lush vegetation and abundant negative ions, offering a variety of routes.

The scenic area might not be very popular, and it's actually quite short, mostly going up and down. The roads are slippery when it rains, which isn't ideal for the elderly. It's basically just walking around; there's not much to see. If you're going to the bamboo forest, I'd say it's optional. The sightseeing bus is just a large Coaster bus. Luckily, we didn't buy tickets and had our family pick us up by car.

First things first: if you enjoy journaling or collecting stamps, definitely bring your journal with you, there's many to collect ! I think it's best to try visit on a misty day, that's where the magic truly comes out. It's okay on a sunny day as well, but make sure to go at a time or day where not as many visitors are crowding the place. The scenery is great and i wish they had translations or meanings of the poems/drawings next to them, i truly wanted to understand. Unfortunately translators are no help with poems.

bus from Chengdu city centre. However, buying a ticket as a foreign visitor can be challenging as the booking system requires a Chinese phone number. You need to book the ticket in advance and only is possible in the museum website. Fortunately, my hotel booked the ticket for me, and I simply transferred them the money. The museum is extremely busy, even week days so allow plenty of time for your visit. Definitely worth seeing!
