Newport, Rhode Island flaunts fancy seafood restaurants and preppy shops galore, but the main attraction are the massive and excessively ornate mansions turned museums. This is where the equivalent of American royalty (think the Vanderbilts, Rockefellers) vacationed in the summer. Tickets are needed to enter the mansions, but it’s a worthwhile visit to see the lavish interior and fixtures. And you can tour the grounds, gardens, and get beautiful seaside views. Fun fact: Taylor Swift also owns a home in Newport.
