Lower Portals - hike & swim
The 1 hr 45 minute drive to Rathdowney/Mt Barney was well worth it for this fantastic hike. The holy grail is the freshwater waterhole and mini falls at the end which is perfect for a swim on a sweat...
Visited the area during the school holidays. Love the scenery, food and accommodation. Stay at Tuckeroo cottages and visited Boonah, Queen Mary's Falls and came home via Mt Tamborine.
Mount Barney is out in the scenic rim and it is just stunning! This is an uncrowded location with not a lot of amenities but for anyone wanting a true bush experience - it is great!
The hike to the lower pools in the gorge at Mt Barney is a category 4 walk and took us over an hour each way (7.4KM round trip). You would have to be fit and mobile to do it as there's a lot of steep...

Break away
