The trip from Vianden took about 2 hours—most of that time was spent waiting for transport. 🏞 Schiessentümpel Cascade The famous waterfall with a stone bridge in the middle of the forest—one of Luxembourg's most iconic landscapes. I hiked the route from the start to the waterfall and back, then returned to Luxembourg. Day 2 Total: €13 for castle entry. Public transport is €0. · -- 🗓 Day 3: Wine Tasting Before Paris My train to Paris was in the afternoon, so around 12:00 PM, I headed to a tasting at Caves Bernard-Massard in Grevenmacher. 🍾 Caves Bernard-Massard One of Luxembourg's well-known wineries located in the Moselle Valley, where you can sample local sparkling and still wines. Currently, a tour including one glass of wine costs €10 per person; the three-glass option is €17. Public transport to the winery is also free. If Luxembourg isn’t on your European travel list yet, it deserves a spot. 🏰🌿 Sitting between France, Germany and Belgium, Luxembourg may be one of Europe’s smallest countries, but there’s plenty to fill a weekend — from medieval streets and dramatic valleys to castles, museums, vineyards and beautiful countryside. 📍 WHAT TO DO IN LUXEMBOURG CITY Start in Luxembourg City and explore the historic centre on foot. Wander through the Old Town, see the Grand Ducal Palace, walk around Place d’Armes and Place Guillaume II, and head towards the Chemin de la Corniche for one of the city’s most beautiful views. It overlooks the old fortifications and the lower district of Grund — definitely one for the camera. 📸 Head down into Grund afterwards. It feels completely different from the upper city, with old houses, bridges and the Alzette River running through it. Walking around the Old Town, Grund and many of the city’s viewpoints costs absolutely nothing. 💸 🏰 CASTLES WORTH SEEING If you have time to leave the capital, Vianden Castle should be high on the list. Sitting above the town of Vianden, it looks like something straight out of a fairytale. Vianden itself is also lovely for a slow walk along the river. You can also look into Beaufort Castle, Larochette Castle and Bourscheid Castle if you’re planning a road trip or want to see more of Luxembourg beyond the capital. 🎨 MUSEUMS & CULTURE One of the best things about Luxembourg is that you can mix history with modern art. Check out Mudam Luxembourg for contemporary art, the Nationalmusée um Fëschmaart for Luxembourg’s history, archaeology and art, and Lëtzebuerg City Museum to learn more about the capital. Exhibitions change throughout the year, so it’s worth checking what’s happening during your exact travel dates before you go. 👀 🎉 TRADITIONS TO EXPERIENCE Luxembourg has a fascinating mix of traditions and influences. One of the country’s best-known traditions is the Echternach Dancing Procession, held around Pentecost and recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage. If you visit around Easter, look out for Éimaischen, a traditional market famous for its small ceramic bird whistles called Péckvillercher. 🐦 Another great time to experience the country is around Luxembourg’s National Day in June, when celebrations, music and festivities take over the capital. 🇱🇺 ☀️ WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT? For pleasant weather, greenery and long days, I’d choose May–June or September. Spring and early autumn are great if you want to explore without travelling during the busiest part of summer. July and August can be lovely for outdoor adventures, hiking and castle trips, while late November and December bring Christmas markets and a completely different atmosphere. 🎄✨ 💸 LUXEMBOURG ON A BUDGET Here’s one of Luxembourg’s biggest travel wins: public transport within the country is free in standard class. 🚆🚌🚋 That means you can use trains, buses and trams to explore without constantly paying for tickets. Take advantage of it! Stay in or around Luxembourg City and use public transport for day trips rather than paying for taxis or renting a car unnecessarily. Walking is another great way to save money. Luxembourg City is made for exploring on foot, and some of its best experiences — the Old Town, viewpoints, parks, bridges and Grund — don’t cost anything. For food, step away from the most touristy squares when you can. Grab something from a bakery or supermarket for breakfast/lunch and save your budget for one good Luxembourgish meal. 🥐 🥾 WANT SOMETHING DIFFERENT? Get out into the countryside. Luxembourg has beautiful hiking areas, particularly the Mullerthal region, often nicknamed “Luxembourg’s Little Switzerland” because of its forests, rock formations and trails. 🌲🥾 You can also explore the Moselle region, known for vineyards and wine villages, or simply jump on public transport and discover one of the country’s smaller towns. 💡 CHEAP TRAVEL TIP: Don’t judge Luxembourg by the cost of its hotels and restaurants. Once you’re there, you can actually build a surprisingly budget-friendly itinerary by using free public transport, walking around the capital, choosing free outdoor attractions and viewpoints, packing snacks or buying lunch from supermarkets/bakeries, and spending your money only on the castles and museums you really want to enter. You don’t necessarily need a week either. A long weekend gives you enough time to experience Luxembourg City and add at least one day trip. If you have longer, slow things down and explore the castles, hiking trails and smaller towns.
