Athens is one of those cities where the ancient history is impossible to ignore, but what makes it interesting is everything happening around it. You can spend the morning looking at the Acropolis, then walk down into streets full of cafés, small shops, street art and neighbourhood life. Around Plaka, the atmosphere is very visitor-friendly, but I find the areas like Psyrri and Koukaki more interesting for getting a feel for the everyday city. Food is another reason to visit. Beyond the usual souvlaki and gyros, Athens has a proper café culture, bakeries worth stopping for, and restaurants where dinner seems to stretch well into the night. And unlike some European capitals, it doesn't feel like the city shuts down early. One thing worth knowing: Athens can be hot, dusty and a little chaotic, especially in summer. It's not the most polished city, and that's probably part of its character. I also think it deserves more than a quick stop on the way to the Greek islands. While most travelers head straight to the famous Greek islands and completely miss this stunning coastal mainland pocket, I found myself naturally gravitating back to its unhurried shores. Getting here is refreshingly straightforward compared to island hopping; I usually fly into Aktion National Airport near Preveza or Corfu, catch a short ferry or drive up the gorgeous coastal highway, and spend around 60 to 100 Euros a day comfortably on cozy seaside guesthouses, local tavernas, and boat rentals. Walking along the marina as the sun dips below the horizon, I always feel an instant sense of belonging that busy tourist hubs simply cannot replicate. What keeps pulling me back is the incredible landscape that feels entirely made for slow exploration and active days on the water.
