Departing from Beijing | Chasing autumn during the National Day holiday, a 6-day, 5-night hidden gem route

I took this small loop at the end of August this year and loved it ❤️. I plan to do it again during the National Day holiday to chase the autumn, and I'm sharing it for your reference~ Taking this route perfectly avoids the crowds 🚫, bypasses traffic jams 🚗, and lets you enjoy the autumn scenery all to yourself 🍂. This hidden gem route is the best! Enjoy the desolation and tranquility of Chifeng 🌄, the splendor of autumn in Ulan Butong 🍁, the vastness of the Taipusi Banner grasslands and the most beautiful Emerald Lake 💎, check in at Swan Castle 🏰, and finish with the golden birch forests of the Grassland Sky Road 🌳. 🚗 Self-driving the whole way, good road conditions, well-equipped with charging stations, suitable for both sedans and EVs ✅ Ulan Nuoer, Taipusi Banner P1, 2, 3, 4, 15, 16 Xiangshui Lotus Pond P5, 6 Qiguo Mountain P7, 8, 9, 10 Kulun Nuoer (Swan Lake) P11, 12 Daqing Mountain P13, 14 Grassland Sky Road P17 🗺️ Route Day 1️⃣: Beijing → Chifeng → Chifeng Museum + Liao Dynasty History Museum → Stay in Chifeng Day 2️⃣: Zhenxing Morning Market for supplies 🥣 → Ongniud Banner (Home of the First Dragon of China) → Qiguo Mountain + Zhaomiao Temple → Stay in Baarin Left Banner Day 3️⃣: Shangjing Ruins of the Liao Dynasty and Museum → Daqing Mountain (Goulaochang) → Stay in Jingpeng Town Day 4️⃣: Ulan Butong Sumu → Yudaokou Grassland Forest Scenic Area → Stay in Duolun County (drive along the road, do not enter the scenic area) Day 5️⃣: Huizong Temple → Shitiao Mountain, Taipusi Banner → Ulan Nuoer (Emerald Lake) → Kulun Nuoer (Swan Castle sunset 🌅) → Stay in Guyuan County Day 6️⃣: Buy yogurt and milk skin at Lanqi Xinyuan 🥛 → Grassland Sky Road (Guyuan section + Zhangbei section) → Return to Beijing 🌟 Scenery along the way Chifeng Section 🏔️ Qiguo Mountain's Quaternary glacial potholes, Daqing Mountain's grassland cracks that look like something out of Zelda 💫, and the tranquil, serene reclining Buddha in the thousand-year-old Liao caves 🙏 Taipusi Banner Section 🌾 Vast grasslands 🌿, wild lakes with water birds 🦢, cows and horses by the roadside 🐄. You don't need to enter the scenic area; just driving along the road is like a painting 🖼️ Sky Road Section (reverse route) 🌬️ Windmills 🎡, terraced fields 🌾, and golden grasslands. Driving the reverse route from Guyuan means fewer cars and wilder scenery. Stop and take photos whenever you want 📸 🍽️ Hidden gem food spots · *Ahadu Mongolian Restaurant**: Mongolian food in Taipusi Banner. I've been going there for ten years. Hand-grabbed meat + a big pot of milk tea 🥩☕. The taste of the grasslands is absolutely amazing! · *Lanqi Xinyuan**: A small shop on the edge of Guyuan County. The yogurt and milk skin are the best I've ever had 🥛✨ 📝 Practical Tips ▫️National Day temperatures: Chifeng city in October is about 5–18°C, Baarin Left Banner is about 0–15°C, Jingpeng Town is about -2–12°C, Duolun is about -5–10°C, and Guyuan is about -8–8°C. Large temperature difference between day and night 🌡️, bring a light down jacket + a thick coat 🧥 ▫️Daqing Mountain: You need to take a detour during restricted hours, but you can enter directly before 7 AM. Or navigate to "Mongolian Camp" (Menggu Yingzi) for 10 yuan/car, and you can enter directly without restrictions ✅ ▫️Ulan Butong: The best autumn scenery is from late September to early October 🍁. Just drive along the road; no need to enter the scenic area 🎉

Where exactly is the true sky road? Stop guessing! — traveler post in Guyuan County

Where exactly is the true sky road? Stop guessing!

Just got back from a self-drive trip on the grassland sky road. The countless uphill curves made me question my sanity, but the scenery was absolutely stunning. Here’s a heads-up for those planning to go: the east section is the hidden gem. 📍Overview Located in Guyuan County, Zhangjiakou, Hebei, this is a ridge scenic route about 116 km long. It’s lightly commercialized, focusing on pristine natural landscapes, perfect for experienced drivers who want peace and to see the real grasslands. 🗺️Itinerary Day 1: Huapiling entrance → scenic viewpoints along the way → Shuangnaobao village (Guyuan exit) Tip: The whole drive takes about 3 hours. Don’t rush—the scenery along the way is the main attraction. ✨Highlights The biggest feature of this road is that it winds along the ridge the entire way, creating a strong visual impact. Every snapshot looks like a Windows desktop wallpaper, especially the vast sunflower fields and countless wind turbines—great for photos. But it’s all curves, so if you get car sick, be sure to bring medicine. 🍜Local specialties There are few supply stops on the road, so bring your own snacks. Once in Guyuan town, try the local youmian wowo (steamed oat noodles) and mushroom stewed chicken. They’re authentic and affordable. 🏨Accommodation recommendations 1. Guesthouses near the scenic area: Shuangnaobao village guesthouses offer grassland views right from your window and starry skies at night. 2. City hotels: Hotels in Guyuan town have full amenities, making washing up and resting convenient. 🎒Travel essentials 1. Protection: high SPF sunscreen, sunglasses, sun hat—the grassland UV rays are intense. 2. Small items: thermos, high-capacity power bank, trash bags—leave no trace is important. 💡Practical tips 1. Fill your gas tank before setting off; there are no gas stations for hundreds of kilometers. 2. Cell signal is weak; download offline maps in advance. 3. Don’t park randomly on mountain roads; cars behind can’t see you, which is dangerous. 4. Wear sneakers; some viewpoints require climbing steps for the full panorama. Though tiring, seeing the hills and flower seas intertwined made it all worth it. Find a weekend to come here and enjoy the free breeze.

Fengning Bashang Grassland | Stay in a summer cloud, wake up to endless green — traveler post in Guyuan County

Fengning Bashang Grassland | Stay in a summer cloud, wake up to endless green

After a week of nonstop heat in Beijing, we finally couldn’t take it anymore. We grabbed some friends and headed north. A little over 4 hours by car, and we plunged straight into the green sea of Fengning Bashang 🌿 This time we stayed at Gesanghua · Yunpan panoramic guesthouse. I read a lot of guides before leaving, but it was even more comfortable than the photos. We booked the panoramic floor-to-ceiling window room. The moment we opened the door, we were stunned—an entire wall of glass, with grasslands stretching to the horizon and windmills in the distance. In the morning, no need to get up. You can lie down and watch the sun slowly rise from the waves of grass, golden light gradually filling the whole room. I heard there’s also a yurt hammock room. Next time I’m definitely trying it. Just imagining lying there, swaying and watching clouds drift by is so soothing ☁️ The rooftop terrace deserves a special mention. The view is completely unobstructed. At dusk, sitting there watching the sunset, the sky changes from orange-red to pink-purple, and when it gets dark, stars start to appear one by one. The night breeze is a bit cool, but wrapped in a jacket sitting there listening to distant insect sounds, you feel your whole body slow down. I thought the grassland would be beautiful enough during the day, but the night was even livelier. There was a bonfire party with everyone singing and dancing around it, plus a fireworks show. The fireworks bursting over the grassland were especially stunning 🎆 The grassland KTV was also fun. Singing facing the vast grassland feels much freer than in a regular KTV. You must order the roasted lamb leg. Freshly roasted, the skin is crispy and fragrant, the meat inside tender and juicy. We couldn’t stop eating. It’s much fresher and more generous than what you get in tourist spots 🍖 During the day, you can also relax in the picnic area, drink tea, and chat. Time moves so slowly here. The guesthouse is in Laoyangquan Village, Datan Town. The high terrain offers an especially good view. Nearby attractions are close by. Dahan Palace and Lightning Lake are just a short drive, and Qiansongba is only 20 minutes away. I especially like that it’s not near the main street. It’s quiet at night, and you sleep really well. Parking is convenient, so driving here is no problem at all 🚗 A few small tips: 1. The temperature difference between morning and night is really big. Wear short sleeves during the day but bring a jacket for the evening. Make sure to bring something warm 🧥 2. It’s best to stay at least two nights. One day is too rushed. Taking your time to experience the grassland’s dawn and dusk is what makes it special 3. It’s busy in peak season, so booking in advance is safer It’s been several days since we left the grassland, but my mind is still filled with images of wind blowing through the grass waves. Summer should be like this—throw yourself into nature, recharge, and then get back to work 🌾

In a summer with a temperature of 17℃, go on a date with the grassland and wetland — traveler post in Guyuan County

In a summer with a temperature of 17℃, go on a date with the grassland and wetland

July is blazing hot, and the city feels like a steamer. But right now in Guyuan, Zhangjiakou, the average temperature is only 17.7℃—the wind is cool, the grass is green, and even the air you breathe tastes fresh and sweet. Drive 20 km northeast of Guyuan County town, and you’ll find Luanhe Shenyun Scenic Area hidden within this “best wetland for tourism with Chinese characteristics” and “most beautiful wetland in Yanzhao.” Step onto the wooden boardwalk of Zhuanfo Mountain and climb up the steps. The sky and earth suddenly open wide. Looking far into the distance, the Lightning River twists and turns like a ribbon. Its winding river channels spread out like green silk on the earth or a silver ribbon left behind by a fairy—ancient people called it “Luanhe Shenyun,” and the name truly lives up to its reputation. Here, escaping the heat and exercising complement each other perfectly.🏃‍♀️ In the early morning, hike along the 2 km wooden boardwalk with grassland on your left and wetland on your right. Soft grass cushions your steps, while birdsong and the wind blend in your ears. In the afternoon, rent a horse to gallop across the meadow. The wind rushes past your ears, leaving all the heat behind. At dusk, climb to the octagonal pavilion on the mountaintop to watch the sunset—the sunlight dyes the river golden red, and the evening breeze carries the fragrance of wildflowers to your face. At that moment, you’ll realize that midsummer can be this gentle. The scenic area is small but full of sights. The wetland is home to 210 species of wild plants and 222 species of terrestrial vertebrates—birdwatching, photography, or simply daydreaming, all are great choices. The mountaintop still preserves a Neolithic altar and the Liao, Jin, and Yuan dynasty general’s platform. Beyond the scenery, history echoes here. 📌Tips 📍Address: Zhuanfo Temple, Shandian River Township, Guyuan County, Zhangjiakou 🎫Admission: 60 CNY per person ⏰Opening hours: May 1 to Oct 20, 2026, 9:00 AM–5:00 PM 🚗Transportation: Self-driving recommended. About 4 hours from Beijing, take the Jingzang Expressway then transfer to Zhangcheng Expressway 🧥What to wear: Large temperature difference between morning and evening, be sure to bring a light jacket 🍜Food: No dining options inside the scenic area. It’s recommended to eat in Guyuan County town. Don’t miss Youmian noodles, roasted whole lamb, and Lightning Lake fish feast ⚠️Reminder: Bring mosquito repellent and drinking water. Protect the grassland and take your trash with you This summer, instead of hiding in an air-conditioned room to cool off, come to Luanhe Shenyun—run and jump in this winding masterpiece, and make the entire grassland your backdrop.🌾💚

Ultimate Summer Escape Route Around Beijing: Grasslands + Wetlands + Amusement Park — traveler post in Guyuan County

Ultimate Summer Escape Route Around Beijing: Grasslands + Wetlands + Amusement Park

When Beijing gets stiflingly hot, drive 3-4 hours north, and you'll enter the secret realm of Bashang, where the average temperature is 16℃. This is the closest natural grassland to the capital, a three-dimensional masterpiece captured by National Geographic. 📜 Khan's Palace: A Dream Back to the Mongol Yuan Dynasty in Front of the Golden Tent The first stop is Khan's Palace. This palace, standing on the site where Genghis Khan stationed his troops, unfolds an epic with its vermilion and gilded accents under the blue sky. A must-do is to rent a Mongolian robe, stand before the Altar of Heaven or the golden tent, and with a click of the shutter, you'll travel back a thousand years. On the west side, 600 Mongolian military tents, and on the east, a historical corridor of the Yuan Dynasty. Bring your kids to listen to a story, and history will come alive. 🌼 Jingbei First Grassland: Wetlands, Flower Seas, and Mini Train Adjacent to the palace, Jingbei First Grassland is a paradise. It's recommended to buy a package ticket for better value. Take the grassland mini train deep into its heart to see Jinlian Lake sparkling like a pearl on the meadow. During summer vacation, the golden lotus and peony flowers bloom into a sea. This is an outdoor paradise: ride horses leisurely across the grassland, draw a full bow for archery, race go-karts across the fields, feel the wind in your ears while grass sliding, and enjoy a refreshing, dry grassland rafting experience on the Lightning River. Golfing here also has a unique charm. 📸 Practical Tips ✅Transportation & Tickets: Driving is best. Navigate to "Jingbei First Grassland" via Jingjia Road or Capital Ring Expressway. ✅Ticket Reference: Grassland package ticket approximately 99 RMB, Khan's Palace approximately 90 RMB. ✅Attire & Gear: Temperatures vary greatly, so a light down jacket is not overkill; UV rays are extremely strong, so bring sunscreen and sunglasses. The light is softest in the early morning and late evening (before 9 AM, after 4 PM). ✅Food & Accommodation: Whole roasted lamb and roasted lamb leg are soul-satisfying delicacies, a must-pair with milk tea and fried rice. ✅Recommended to stay within the Khan's Palace scenic area. The bonfire party, song and dance, and fireworks at night will bring the revelry to a climax. This summer, leave the heat to the city and come to Bashang Grassland for a refreshing nomadic rendezvous.
