Lapstone Zig Zag Walk 🌿 A Little Piece of Blue Mountains History
I did the Lapstone Zig Zag Walk yesterday and honestly really enjoyed this one. It’s not the kind of Blue Mountains walk with one huge famous lookout at the end — instead, you’re walking through the bush while discovering bits of old railway history along the way. I started from Zig Zag Street parking and followed the old route, stopping at different viewpoints before eventually reaching the impressive Knapsack Bridge. I knew absolutely nothing about the bridge when I got there but after looking it up, the history is actually fascinating. The sandstone viaduct was completed in 1865 and originally carried trains as part of the old Lapstone Zig Zag railway. The Zig Zag was built to help trains climb the steep Lapstone incline, with trains having to reverse direction as they made their way up the mountain. Standing underneath those huge sandstone arches definitely makes you appreciate the engineering a little more. The walk itself was really pleasant too — a mixture of wide old roads, bush tracks, rock cuttings, bridges and plenty of greenery. I also saw lots of people walking their dogs, so it seems to be a popular local weekend walk. I unfortunately ran out of time and didn’t continue on to Elizabeth Lookout and the other viewpoints, so there is definitely more here to explore. I wouldn’t mind coming back and doing a longer version next time. If you like walks that combine nature + history, this is a really nice one to add to your Blue Mountains list. Be sure to check the picking season and related regulations. 🏠 Accommodation: Orange offers many lodging options, from luxury hotels to budget inns. One recommended place is The National Orange and Country Motel. This motel provides free parking, Wi-Fi, and breakfast service. The rooms are clean and tidy, and the location is very convenient, just a 3-minute walk from the train station, making it easy to reach Sydney and other major attractions. 🚂 Train route: The world's shortest train route! From Orange to Borenore Caves (about 30 minutes), a one-way ticket costs 3.8 AUD per person (children free). From Borenore Caves to Lithgow (about 45 minutes), a one-way ticket costs 6.8 AUD per person (children free). Overall, Orange is a city suitable for self-driving tours, where you can experience the authentic rural charm of New South Wales. A Relaxing Two-Day, One-Night Getaway July coincides with school holidays, and the Blue Mountains is a popular travel destination. We decided to make the legendary Zig Zag Railway, known for its historical significance, the highlight of our weekend trip. The Zig Zag Railway is not only a dream route for railway enthusiasts but also a perfect family-friendly time machine. Paired with cozy accommodations, it made our winter getaway warm and memorable. The Zig Zag Railway boasts a rich history that dates back over 150 years. Officially opened in 1869, it served as a critical railway project connecting Sydney to the central-western regions of Australia, such as Lithgow, in the Blue Mountains area. The "Z-shaped" design allowed trains to traverse steep slopes without tunnels, making it an engineering marvel. In 1975, a group of passionate railway enthusiasts and volunteers began restoring the railway as a tourist attraction, and it officially reopened for operation. In early 2020, operations were suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic. During this time, the railway also suffered severe damage from bushfires and floods. Thanks to years of restoration efforts by volunteers, the Zig Zag Railway finally reopened to the public in May 2023, reclaiming its place in the spotlight. 🚗 Weekend Two-Day Itinerary and Must-Visit Stops On Saturday morning, we set off from Sydney before 9 AM to avoid peak travel times, heading towards Lithgow along the Great Western Highway. Along the way, we stopped at five recommended spots for rest, walks, or photos—perfect for short family breaks: 1️⃣ Leura Village 📍 About 1 hour 40 minutes by car This elegant and tranquil village exudes a European vibe, with streets lined with cafes and antique shops. You can stroll along Leura Mall, enjoy a hot coffee, or grab some snacks for the kids. In spring, the cherry blossom avenue makes it one of the most popular towns in the Blue Mountains. 2️⃣ Echo Point & Three Sisters Lookout 📍 Katoomba, about 1 hour 50 minutes by car A must-see landmark in the Blue Mountains. From the lookout, you can admire the stunning Jamison Valley and take photos with the iconic Three Sisters rock formation. Facilities include restrooms, parking, and a visitor center, making it a convenient stop. 3️⃣ Scenic World 📍 Near Katoomba If time permits, consider riding the world’s steepest railway, scenic cableway, and glass skywalk. Kids will love the adventure. If you don’t plan to enter, you can still enjoy a short walk and take photos on the surrounding trails. 4️⃣ Blackheath Lookout / Govetts Leap Lookout 📍 Blackheath area, about 2 hours 10 minutes by car Nature lovers should stop here to explore the scenic walking trails. Govetts Leap offers breathtaking cliff and waterfall views, making it an ideal spot for family photos. It’s less crowded on weekends, with fresh air, restrooms, and parking available. 5️⃣ Hartley Historic Village 📍 Near Lithgow, about 2 hours 30 minutes by car 🏛️ A well-preserved 19th-century colonial-style village with stone houses, an old church, and galleries. It’s a great place for a quick photo stop or visit. From here, it’s just a 20-minute drive to the Zig Zag Motel, making it a perfect final stop before arrival. Each stop offers great photo opportunities and a chance to stretch your legs. 🌙 Arrival at Accommodation: Zig Zag Motel & Apartments By evening, we arrived at our accommodation in Lithgow. The night air was crisp and serene, making it an ideal place for travelers to rest and reflect. 🏠 Accommodation Recommendation: Zig Zag Motel & Apartments We booked a two-bedroom villa through Trip.com, nestled in a lush garden with a private parking space and a small terrace. During holidays or school breaks, allow extra time. ✅ No Food Sales at the Station The Zig Zag station does not sell food or drinks, so bring water bottles, snacks, or light meals, especially if traveling with kids. ✅ Prepare for Changing Weather Steam train carriages have open windows, and winter can be windy and cold. Wear warm coats, hats, and scarves, and consider bringing blankets for kids. ✅ Be Mindful of Smoke and Noise Steam trains release large amounts of white smoke and can be noisy when starting. If children are easily startled, prepare them in advance or bring ear protection. ✅ Keep Hands Clean Carriages are mostly wooden, and windows require manual operation. #australiatrip Remnants of the birthplace of the Australian Iron and steel industry constructed in the early 1900's is a great educational experience navigating the well formed paths throughout the area. The site offers many information sources as you make your wat though the area allowing you to see the remaining buildings and structures. A pleasant place to have a picnic with toilets available and exploration.
Hassans Walls Lookout
#australiatrip This is well hidden gem Lithgow. A short (5-10mins) drive will take you to the top. ( 2WD friendly!) There is a nice covered picnic spot with tables and chairs before a walkway to the lookout. From the other reviews I have read, it seems like the walkway is built recently, making it more safer and easily accessible. I have to admit this is probably one of my favourite lookouts I have ever been. Magnificent 360 view of the Lithgrow valley. There is also another scenic spot (walk) where you enter into this little cave which gives you another perspective of the lookout. A MUST visit spot if you are around that area!! Or add that to your blue mountain/lithgow/dubbo trip!

You haven’t been to Sydney if you haven’t been to the Blue Mountains. World Heritage Site that is 2 hours scenic train ride from Sydney Central Station. If you’re on a budget like me, Get off at Katoomba station & take the bus to Echo Point to see the three sisters and walk the giant staircase down to bottom of the 3 sisters. But if you want to spend a little, Scenic World tour office is just at the exit of the Katoomba train station.

Honestly, the Blue Mountains are far inferior to some famous mountains in China. If you don't hike, all you see are the Three Sisters peaks, which aren't even really mountains. The cable car ride is just for fun, you won't get much experience from it.

The theater isn't very large, so the view from the second floor was excellent, and the actors' performances were very lifelike, with very interesting dialogue. Plus, the theater has a beautiful terrace with floor-to-ceiling windows; I took some lovely photos there in the afternoon!

I booked my tickets at the zoo entrance, and they were confirmed instantly. I just scanned the code to enter, and they were exactly the same as the official tickets, but much cheaper. There are all sorts of animals and shows; you could easily spend a whole day experiencing them all. If you're short on time, just see the main attractions or things you like, such as the classic view of the giraffes by the sea alongside the Opera House and Harbour Bridge. The round-trip boat ride offers various views of the Opera House and the CBD skyline.
