Traveling to the Southern Hemisphere for summer during the New Year is simply delightful! Driving along the Great Ocean Road, you can feel the freedom in the air! The beauty of this place depends on the weather—it's stunning on sunny days, but less so on cloudy ones. We had plenty of time, so we spent four days exploring the entire Great Ocean Road. The itinerary below can be condensed into 2–3 days, but doing it all in one day would be exhausting! Day 1: Melbourne → Bells Beach → Anglesea → Split Point Lighthouse → Lorne → Apollo Bay (overnight stay in Apollo Bay) Day 2: Cape Otway Lightstation (overnight stay in Apollo Bay) Day 3: Twelve Apostles → Gibson Steps (overnight stay in Port Campbell) Day 4: London Bridge → The Grotto → Port Fairy → Melbourne · *Bells Beach** The lookout offers views of the cliffs, and there are stairs leading down to the beach. · *Anglesea** Visit the Anglesea Golf Club, where you can take a sightseeing cart to see wild kangaroos. Tickets cost AUD 15 per person. · *Split Point Lighthouse** A famous lighthouse with stunning ocean views. · *Lorne** A lively town with bustling beaches and great restaurants. Visit in the morning (for optimal lighting) or at sunset. Helicopter tours are available. · *Gibson Steps** Located near the Twelve Apostles, these stone steps lead directly to the beach. It's best to visit in the morning or at sunset. If you can only choose one spot for sunset viewing, I recommend Gibson Steps for its spaciousness, as the Twelve Apostles viewing platform can be quite crowded. You can also watch the sunset here and then head to the Twelve Apostles for the afterglow. My plan doesn’t include searching for wild koalas 🐨 or rainforest walks 🍃. ✨Day 1: Depart from Melbourne city 🚗 ⬇️ Geelong seaside town: The first stop is here to see the painted puppets 🪵 and experience the vibe of “Little California.” ⬇️ Anglesea: This beach is quite beautiful with many surfers 🏄, worth a quick look 👀. ⬇️ Red Hat Lighthouse: Another great photo spot and you can also take a walk along the coastline 🌊. ⬇️ Great Ocean Road Memorial Arch: Stop for a photo; if you don’t want people in the shot, you don’t have to get out of the car. ⬇️ Lorne town: Have lunch here, I recommend Totti's 🍴—it’s really delicious 😋. After eating, you can stroll around the town. ⬇️ Teddy Lookout: A viewpoint in Lorne town where you can see the coastline and the coastal road. ⬇️ Kennett River cafe koala: Here you can look for wild koalas in the trees 🐨. ⬇️ Apollo Bay Marriner Lookout: A viewpoint overlooking the whole town and sea view—definitely a must-visit!!! ⬇️ Check into a hotel in Apollo Bay. Personally, I found the taste average and a bit fishy ❌. ⬇️ Maits Rest Forest: You can take a rainforest walk here 🍃. ⬇️ The Twelve Apostles: I heard going in the afternoon causes backlighting, making photos less attractive. But when we went in the morning, the clouds were too thick; the blue sky only appeared at noon. I guess it depends on luck. ⬇️ Gibson Steps: When we went, it was closed, but now it’s open 🉑. You can get close to the rocks and go down to the beach. Definitely worth visiting. ⬇️ Loch Ard Gorge ⬇️ Campbell Port: Have lunch here. We chose 12 Rocks Beach Bar Cafe ☕️, but the taste was average ❌. ⬇️ London Bridge ⬇️ The Grotto: Our last stop. I highly recommend going down the stairs to see the sea cave. It’s a unique and special view 💯. ⬇️ Start the return trip back to Melbourne city. The scenery along the way is also quite nice, with haystack pastoral views somewhat reminiscent of Inner Mongolia. The two-day self-driving trip is very relaxed and enjoyable 😌. I recommend everyone arrange a two-day Great Ocean Road itinerary if time allows—no need to rush, just leisurely enjoy the beautiful scenery 🌊.
A Relaxing Little Getaway in Lorne 🌿
· - The Location -- Lorne is a lovely little coastal town with a very laid-back vibe. It’s 2-hour drive from Melbourne CBD, making it a great spot for a weekend getaway. There are convenience stores, cafés, and restaurants up to just 2km away. There are also several lookout points around the area where you can enjoy the beautiful coastal scenery. Overall, it’s a lovely town with plenty to see and explore. · - The Homestay -- The homestay was spacious and well-equipped, making it a great choice for families or groups of friends. The kitchen had all the necessary appliances and cooking equipment. The bathrooms had heating function. The living area was also large enough for everyone to hang out together and watch TV. It felt comfortable and had pretty much everything we needed for our stay. · - The Views -- One of the best things about staying here was the stunning views of the beach and ocean. The coastal scenery was beautiful, get ready to wake up early for a stunning sunrise view! If you enjoy the beach, ocean views, and a bit of scenic exploring, Lorne definitely won’t disappoint. · - Overall Experience -- Overall, we had a great stay! The town is beautiful, the homestay is spacious and well-equipped, and the ocean views make the experience even better. It’s definitely worth the trip. While there are quite a few stairs to climb, there are resting points along the way, making it manageable for most people.After enjoying the views, we treated ourselves to scones and a drink at the charming tearooms, set in the old stables—a delightful way to relax and reflect on the visit. The Reuben sandwich was also a highlight, highly recommended for anyone looking for a satisfying bite.Split Point Lighthouse is a must-visit for its incredible vistas, rich history, and welcoming atmosphere. Lorne Beach is a super popular beach in Australia. The beach is really spotless, without a trace of pollution, and the sea water is also extremely blue. Because the weather was good, we also went out to sea.

Lorne Pier is located on the famous Lorne Beach. It is a wooden pier. It is very long and it takes about 20 minutes to walk from the starting point to the end point.
