Angola 🇦🇴 is perfect for road trips, waterfalls, rocky mountains, and Atlantic coastal towns. The best place for a first trip is Luanda, Kalandula Falls, and Pedras Negras de Pungo Andongo, which the country's tourism agency considers key attractions in the region. I recommend 5 days; it's a good amount of time, no need to rush down to Namibe or Lubango in one trip. 📅 5-Day Itinerary:
Day 1: Luanda 🇦🇴
Take a break from your flight and visit Fortaleza de São Miguel → Marginal de Luanda → Ilha do Cabo. In the evening, have local food and return to the hotel. It's not advisable to walk alone at night, as Luanda still has a relatively high rate of theft and armed robbery.
Day 2: Luanda → Kalandula
Depart early in the morning with a car and driver. Today is a full road trip. Arrive and stay near Kalandula. It's not recommended to drive at night.
Day 3: Kalandula Falls 💦
Dedicate today to Kalandula Falls. The waterfall is one of the government's "7 Wonders of Angola."
Stay another night in this area to avoid rushing back.
Day 4: Pedras Negras → Malanje 🪨
Visit Pedras Negras de Pungo Andongo, a massive rock formation that is one of Angola's iconic landscapes. Then stay overnight in Malanje or begin the return journey if a driver and sufficient time are available.
Day 5: Return to Luanda
Return to the city at a leisurely pace. Stay the last night in Luanda and fly the next day. This will allow for better road and traffic management.
🏨 Recommended Accommodation
In Luanda, for a central location and a good standard hotel, choose EPIC SANA Luanda Hotel, which offers airport shuttle service that can be booked in advance.
For an even higher-end option, consider the InterContinental Luanda Miramar.
In the Kalandula area, Pousada Calandula is a good choice for a day trip back to Luanda after a visit to Kalandula.
🍴 Restaurants
For a simple and not-too-fancy meal in Luanda, try Restaurante Churrascaria Nandinhos.
Must-try dishes include Muamba de Galinha (chicken with palm sauce), Calulu, Funge (grilled fish), and seafood. The official Angola tourism website highlights Muamba, Calulu, and Funge as key national dishes.
📌 Tips
Hiring a car with a driver is highly recommended for the Luanda–Malanje route, especially for your first trip. Travel only during the day, as roads outside the city are unpredictable, lack streetlights, and some areas may still have unexploded ordnance.
My recommended time for a first trip is approximately June–September. The weather is relatively dry, making road trips easier. However, to see Kalandula with its abundant water, later in the year during the rainy season offers a more spectacular view, albeit with more challenging roads.
Regarding visas, Angola has an official Online Tourism Visa system for SMEs. For those requiring a visa, your passport must have more than 6 months of validity remaining, and online applications are processed directly through the government. Thai passport holders should select the SME nationality system to check the latest eligibility criteria before purchasing non-refundable tickets.
Regarding security, the US has classified Angola as Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution in March 2026, but upgraded the Luanda metropolitan area to Reconsider Travel due to crime concerns. The FCDO has issued particularly strong warnings for Cabinda and certain areas along the DRC border, which are not included in this route.
✨ Summary
Day 1 — Luanda
Day 2 — Kalandula Falls
Day 3 — Kalandula Falls
Day 4 — Pedras Negras + Malanje
Day 5 — Return to Luanda
For a first-time trip, 5 days is ideal, allowing you to see the capital city, massive waterfalls, and unique rock formations without excessive travel time across borders. 🇦🇴
