St. John's Church (Alter Dom St. Johannis), located in the center of Mainz, Germany, adjacent to Mainz Cathedral (Mainzer Dom), is one of the oldest surviving cathedrals in Germany. Construction began in the 7th century, and before the current cathedral was built, it served as the cathedral of the Archbishop of Mainz for a long period, hence its name "Old Cathedral." This church witnessed Mainz's development as an important religious center of the Holy Roman Empire. In 1002, King Heinrich II of Germany was crowned here. Recent archaeological excavations have uncovered early medieval architectural remains, the sarcophagus of Archbishop Elkanbald, and numerous precious artifacts, further confirming its historical status as an early cathedral. The church adopts a simple and solemn Romanesque architectural style, and its interior preserves architectural remains from multiple historical periods, making it an important source of material for the study of early Christianity and medieval architecture in Germany.
