Hey guys. If you’re like me and desperately need a break fro — traveler post in Narooma

Hey guys. If you’re like me and desperately need a break from the daily grind—honestly, managing retail stores back in Montreal can really take it out of you—you need to put this place on your radar. I’m currently down on the South Coast of New South Wales, in a quiet little town called Narooma, and I think I’ve found my new favourite spot. I’ve been staying at this place called The Whale. Now, as someone who works in brand management, I really appreciate when a place knows exactly what it is. It doesn’t try to be some flashy, over-curated influencer trap. It’s got this incredibly cool, laid-back 70s Ibiza motel vibe. Apparently, the Merivale team spent almost three years putting this together, and they nailed it. I managed to snag the top-floor apartment, and the moment I walked out onto the private rooftop garden, I was sold. The design is super interesting—lots of warm retro curves, handmade light fixtures, and this crazy hexagonal lava stone sink in the bathroom under a round skylight. It actually makes brushing your teeth feel like a main event! Every room here is totally different, too. No boring, cookie-cutter hotel templates here. Most of my afternoons have been spent just drifting between the magnesium pool and the wellness deck. They’ve got a sauna and a cold plunge tub with a circular window overlooking Wagonga Inlet. Being Canadian, I’m no stranger to a cold shock, but doing a cold plunge with a view of the sunny Australian coast? Unreal! Since I love mixing a bit of nature with my beach trips, I took a boat out to Montague Island yesterday. The fur seals out there are hilarious—just lounging on the rocks, completely unbothered. I felt a spiritual connection to them, honestly. Later, I drove over to Central Tilba and did a bit of walking through the wetlands. I even spotted a few kangaroos hanging out in the green hills! If you ever find yourself down this way, grab an ice cream, walk down to the Glasshouse Rocks at sunset, and just breathe it in. It’s the ultimate reset. I’m seriously considering "forgetting" my flight back to Canada.

A Source of Sydney Fish Market's Oysters: A Batemans Bay Road Trip — traveler post in Narooma

A Source of Sydney Fish Market's Oysters: A Batemans Bay Road Trip

Many people visit the Sydney Fish Market for oysters, but not everyone knows that a significant portion of them actually comes from the New South Wales South Coast. Batemans Bay happens to be one of the key towns along this famous Oyster Coast. For this trip to Batemans Bay, I didn't pack my itinerary with tourist attractions. I really only came for two things: to eat oysters and enjoy the ocean views. Batemans Bay is surrounded by several premium oyster farms. Its pristine estuary environment nurtures Sydney Rock Oysters with unique flavor profiles. Many local restaurants and seafood shops serve up the day's catch, offering a level of freshness you just can't get in the big city. Sitting by the water, slurping freshly shucked oysters while gazing out at the bay—no heavy sauces needed, just a squeeze of lemon—allows you to taste the purest flavor of the sea. After satisfying my appetite, I took a leisurely stroll along the beach. There are no massive crowds or frantic tourist vibes in Batemans Bay. You'll see locals fishing off the coast, people paddling out on boats, and families playing in the sand. The entire town exudes a wonderfully relaxed holiday atmosphere. I absolutely love places like this. There's no pressure to tick off "must-see" spots or rush against the clock. Simply finding a nice seafood joint and taking a walk on the beach is more than enough for a perfect afternoon. If you're planning a road trip to explore the NSW South Coast, I highly recommend adding Batemans Bay to your route. It's about a 4-hour drive south of Sydney along the Princes Highway (A1). If you're coming from Canberra, it's a scenic 2-hour drive via the Kings Highway, taking you through beautiful forests and mountains—making it a very popular weekend getaway route. Sometimes, the most unforgettable part of a trip isn't the famous landmarks. It's savoring the freshest oysters by the water, taking a slow walk, watching the waves crash against the shore, and embracing the signature slow-paced lifestyle of the Aussie South Coast. 📍 Batemans Bay | New South Wales South Coast 🚗 ~4-hour drive from Sydney | ~2-hour drive from Canberra 🦪 Recommended Experiences: Tasting Sydney Rock Oysters, local seafood restaurants, beach walks 🌊 Travel Tip: Pair it with Narooma and Bermagui for a 2–3 day South Coast road trip to fully experience Australia's renowned Oyster Coast.

Traveling to a Small Town on Australia's East Coast Just for a Bite of Fresh Oysters — traveler post in Narooma

Traveling to a Small Town on Australia's East Coast Just for a Bite of Fresh Oysters

Driving for over five hours from Sydney, I arrived in Narooma on the South Coast of New South Wales. If you're just doing a standard tourist trip, Narooma probably wouldn't make it onto most people's itineraries. However, the annual Oyster Festival draws a crowd who willingly make the long drive just to taste the region's signature seafood. My main goal for this trip to Narooma was simple: eat fresh oysters. Unlike your average food festival, what makes the Narooma Oyster Festival so special is the participation of various local oyster farms. They bring their freshly cultivated oysters right to the event, allowing visitors to sample different regional varieties and flavors all in one place. Even though they're all oysters, every farm produces something unique. Some are sweeter, while others have a much more pronounced briny flavor. It’s only by comparing the different types that you truly realize how Australia's coastal aquaculture and natural environment shape the ingredients. Beyond oysters, the festival also features a variety of stalls selling other seafood, drinks, and local produce. But for me, the biggest draw of the oyster festival isn't just the food—it's the incredibly strong sense of place. The oyster farmers themselves are there to introduce their products, demonstrating shucking and cooking techniques, while visitors sit by the water, taking their time to savor the seafood. The whole event feels less like a massive commercial expo and much more like a genuine community celebration of the ocean. Of course, Narooma's appeal extends far beyond the dining table. The town itself is a stunning coastal gem. With its crystal-clear waters, rocky shorelines, and tranquil bays, it’s a place that begs to be explored at a leisurely pace. One wonderful surprise was spotting sea lions nearby. Watching them swim around, and then thinking back to the fresh oysters I just ate, made the trip feel like more than just a foodie getaway—it was a true connection with the ocean. Honestly, if you were just coming for a single meal of oysters, a five-plus-hour drive from Sydney might not seem worth it to everyone. But if you turn it into a road trip, taking in the spectacular coastal scenery along the way, stopping in quaint towns, and capping it off with the annual oyster festival, the whole journey becomes incredibly rewarding. Sometimes, the best trips aren't to the most popular tourist hotspots. It's exactly because some small towns take a little extra time to reach that they manage to hold onto their unique charm. 📍Narooma Oyster Festival | New South Wales South Coast 🚗 From Sydney: Approx. 5–6 hours driving (depending on traffic and stops) 🦪 Recommended: Tasting and comparing oysters from different farms, local seafood 🦭 Nearby Highlights: Coastal views and sea lion spotting 💡 Tip: Best planned as a 2–3 day South Coast road trip. A day trip just for the festival is not recommended.

Sydney Opera House

The theater isn't very large, so the view from the second floor was excellent, and the actors' performances were very lifelike, with very interesting dialogue. Plus, the theater has a beautiful terrace with floor-to-ceiling windows; I took some lovely photos there in the afternoon!

Taronga Zoo Sydney

I saw many animals that I've never seen in China, and the animals here seemed more vibrant. The zoo is also in a great location; you need to take a boat to get there, and you can see the sea view and the Sydney Opera House.

Sydney Whale Watching Cruise

Amazing whale-watching experience in Sydney! 🐋I really enjoyed this experience from start to finish. The scenery and the whole environment were absolutely beautiful, and we were lucky enough to see a lot of whales! It was amazing watching them in their natural environment, and the experience was even better than I expected. Definitely a great activity to do while visiting Sydney, and I would happily recommend it to others!

Blue Mountains National Park

Honestly, the Blue Mountains are far inferior to some famous mountains in China. If you don't hike, all you see are the Three Sisters peaks, which aren't even really mountains. The cable car ride is just for fun, you won't get much experience from it.
