Hoshino Resorts is opening four new 'Kai' hot spring ryokans in Japan in 2026. If you are planning a trip, here is the direct breakdown on locations, timing, and whether they actually look worth the money.

1. Kai Kusatsu (Opens June 7, 2026)
· Location: Gunma Prefecture (famous hot spring town).
· The Vibe: They built a private tunnel connecting the quiet resort to the main hot spring street.
· Food/Value Verdict: Highly worth it. Kusatsu has incredible local street food and grilled skewers. Having quick tunnel access to the food street without losing the resort's quietness is a massive plus.

2. Kai Miyajima (Opens July 23, 2026)
· Location: Opposite Itsukushima Shrine.
· The Vibe: Ocean views and shrine views right from the bath.
· Food/Value Verdict: Just okay. Miyajima is famous for oysters and maple cakes, which are great, but mid-summer here will be crowded and overpriced. I’d wait for off-season rates.

3. Kai Matsumoto (Reopens Aug 4, 2026)
· Location: Nagano Prefecture.
· The Vibe: Merging hot springs with music and wine. They are opening a dedicated local wine bar.
· Food/Value Verdict: Definitely worth it. As a barista, I appreciate a well-curated beverage program. Shinshu (Nagano) wine paired with local beef is top-tier. Highly recommend this one for food and drink lovers.

4. Kai Zao (Opens Oct 15, 2026)
· Location: Miyagi Prefecture.
· The Vibe: High-acid therapeutic springs and mountain views.
· Food/Value Verdict: Not really worth the detour unless you are specifically looking for skin-healing springs. It is a bit remote, and the local food scene is quieter compared to Matsumoto or Kusatsu.
