In Sicily, Immerse Yourself in a Cinematic World
Igiea
The White Lotus Vibe 🌊
The azure waters of Palermo surge, Pellegrino Mountain stands silently watching. This building, spanning three centuries, is a symbol of Sicily's Belle Époque and a tender tale of love and protection.
Villa Igiea was initially completed in the late 19th century, designed by British Admiral Domville. Its neo-Gothic silhouette stands on the shores of Acquasanta harbor. In 1899, the most influential Flori family in Sicily purchased it, initially intending it as a sanatorium for their ailing daughter, Igiea. The name was taken from their daughter and also as a tribute to the Greek goddess of health, Hygieia. Later, this sentiment was extended to a Grand... The hotel officially opened in 1900, becoming a social center for Mediterranean nobility.
The renovation was overseen by Ernesto Basile, a master of the Sicilian Freestyle style. He added a touch of soft poetry to the architecture with the brushstrokes of Art Nouveau. The iconic Sala Basile Hall, with its seasonal frescoes and antique furniture, remains a gem of Italian Belle Époque architecture.
Through turbulent times, it served a medical mission, witnessing joy and sorrow, and safeguarding life. In 2019, Rocco... Forte Group, with meticulous craftsmanship, restored this century-old building to its former glory, restoring its elegance.
Built by the mountains and the sea, the hotel features tiered gardens that gently extend towards the bay. Opening the windows reveals endless blue skies, while the hotel is backed by verdant mountain views, capturing the natural romance of Sicily.
The guest rooms are decorated with restrained yet elegant aesthetics, blending modern comfort with historical elements. The bathrooms, with their ocean views, are truly wonderful.
For over a century, this place has welcomed European royalty, dignitaries, and film stars. Countless stories have unfolded here. Standing in the hotel, I was inexplicably reminded of the famous Italian film *The Leopard*. The film tells the epic story of the elegant demise of the old aristocracy amidst the tides of Italian unification in 1860, winning the Palme d'Or at Cannes that year. Netflix even produced a new series version of *The Leopard* in 2025.
The hotel remains deeply rooted in the local culture, sourcing ingredients from Sicily itself. The gardens and dining tables follow natural principles, allowing history and everyday life to coexist gently.
