During my trip through New Zealand's South Island, I spent an entire day just driving between towns. Personally, I’ve always been drawn to quiet places away from the crowds, and this long stretch of road gave me a real sense of peace and comfort. We stayed overnight at a simple motel near the historic "Evelyn" church. The area was so incredibly quiet that it felt like being in the heart of the countryside, miles away from the city's hustle and bustle. While this kind of accommodation might not be for everyone—especially those who prefer luxury hotels—I found it perfect for gathering my thoughts. We also enjoyed a great dinner at a small restaurant there that serves stone-grilled meats. The next day, we kept going and passed through Invercargill. I noticed a beautiful historic building with a classic design and a metal fire escape on the outside; a restaurant called "The Oxford" was located at the bottom. Later, we stopped for lunch at a local spot called "Lone Star," a place known for its grilled food. They have a model of a World War II fighter plane at the entrance that really catches your eye from the highway. It was a long haul and definitely required some patience, but driving through those wide-open landscapes and quiet towns was such a pleasant and peaceful experience.

Mon, Mar 27, 2023 🌞 Picked apples! Starting the perfect New Zealand South Island holiday mode! 🍎✨ 📍Today's highlights: Departed from Timaru and drove to the world-famous Lake Tekapo! Today was a sunny day. We went hiking at Blue Lake and the Tasman Glacier. After parking at the foot of the mountain, we hiked to the high ground below the glacier, where we could see the snow-capped mountains and lakes in panoramic views. There are many hiking trails here. I heard you can also take a helicopter to the summit and then hike, and then take a helicopter back down. Alternatively, you can take a boat to the foot of the Tasman Glacier to see the floating ice on the lake. The sun shone brightly throughout the hike. Although the air temperature was only in the teens Celsius, it felt like midsummer. After descending from the high ground, we took another trail to the riverbank, offering a different perspective of the snow-capped mountains and glaciers from the lake. The lake water had a strong mineral taste; it seems undrinkable. Next to the glacier is Lake Pukaki. We walked along the lakeside road, and there was a lavender field nearby. The lavender fields weren't very large; you could see the edge of it at a glance. I heard the entrance fee used to be 5 yuan, but it's now 8 yuan per person. Most tourists just took a few photos outside the fence and left. The ice cream at the entrance, priced at 10 yuan each, was incredibly delicious—a strong lavender flavor with a generous amount of raspberry solids. I heard the salmon by the lake was worth trying, but when I found a place, it was closed today, probably due to the New Year. We continued our drive to our third stop—Lake Tekapo. It was raining at Lake Tekapo, sometimes heavy, sometimes light. Wearing my travel jacket, I walked along the lakeside in the light rain. The seagulls here weren't afraid of people, and the wild rabbits were quite plump. I was taking pictures of the Church of the Good Shepherd next door; it was hopping around beside me—a very harmonious scene. There's an observatory here, usually a stargazing spot, but with the rain today, stargazing was out of the question. Tonight we're staying in Timaru, about an hour's drive from Lake Tekapo. Our accommodation is very close to the beach. After dinner, as it got dark, we set off at 10 pm to watch the penguins return to their nests. There are penguin colonies at several spots, especially spot number 99, where the penguins will come right up to you and interact with you – it's really interesting! Going whale watching tomorrow! Looking forward to it!

Location: Situated in the town of Timaru on the east coast of New Zealand's South Island, within the Canterbury region. Transportation: It takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes to drive from Christchurch. If you're doing a self-drive tour around the South Island, this bay is a great spot for a rest stop. Personal Experience: Caroline Bay is arguably the most vibrant and iconic spot in Timaru. The beach is perfect for a leisurely stroll, with its clean, blue waters and fine sand. During summer, the local Caroline Bay Carnival takes place here, transforming the beach into a lively scene with a small amusement park, food stalls, and live performances 🎡. I particularly enjoy walking along the bay, watching people walking their dogs, kids playing in the sand, and locals sunbathing—it’s incredibly relaxing. Unlike beaches in big cities, this one isn’t crowded, offering more of a small-town laid-back vibe. If you have time, I highly recommend staying until sunset. The view of the sun setting over the water is absolutely stunning 🌅.

📍 Location and Transportation Located on the east coast of New Zealand’s South Island, between Christchurch and Oamaru, accessible via State Highway 1, with convenient parking in the city center. 📝 Personal Impressions Timaru lacks the hustle and bustle of big cities and isn’t a hotspot swarmed by tourists. It feels more like a slowly unfolding everyday story. The streets are lined with well-preserved historic buildings, with cafes and small shops mixed in. Just a few steps and you can smell the aroma of fresh bread and roasted coffee beans. I especially enjoy the feeling of walking along the seaside, where fishing boats are docked in the harbor and the calm Caroline Bay lies in the distance. Seagulls leisurely stroll along the shore, children chase each other on the beach, creating a very lived-in yet warm scene. The city center is small, but surprises often await around corners, like the music of street performers or the chimes of an old clock tower. Timaru isn’t a place that dazzles at first glance, but after walking a few streets, it quietly leaves a warm spot in your heart.
歐郎瑞旅遊日記16Caroline Bay is really picturesque. We were driving by and passed by this bay, so we stopped here to enjoy the sea breeze and look at the scenery. It was really comfortable and relaxing.
travelerererA very unique steamship, still providing excellent service despite being over a century old. There are Chinese staff on board, and the buffet restaurant on the other side is quite good. Enjoy a relaxed and pleasant time in Queenstown.

铨上风满楼One of the most unforgettable experiences of our New Zealand trip! 🇳🇿❤️ The moment we sailed through Milford Sound, we were surrounded by towering mountains, beautiful waterfalls, and breathtaking scenery everywhere we looked. It was one of those moments when you just put your phone down for a second and take it all in. Nature is truly amazing, and Milford Sound is even more beautiful in person. Definitely an experience we’ll always remember! ✨⛰️
Shim_23I took seasickness medication beforehand. The sea wasn't too windy that day, but there were still some swells, and I felt a little seasick when the boat first set off at a low speed. The boat was very clean, and the crew was very attentive to service. We didn't see many whales that day, and the ones we did see weren't very big; I only caught a glimpse of a whale's tail once. Overall, it was a good experience. The only downside was that it's about a 2.5-hour drive from Christchurch, but thankfully, the journey passes through vineyards, and there are a few wineries worth visiting.
111***97Located in the cultural heart of Timaru, this is a great place for first time visitors…
铨上风满楼Skydiving is super fun, 15,000 feet, the free fall feels like life is free! The package comes with a handheld camera, with photos and videos. After the jump, it will be sent directly to your email for you to download. It takes about 20 minutes to drive to the base.
道治One of best activity in Queenstown. Super convenient when reach the check in counter, just show the booking and get the ticket within a min. Can skip the line during peak hour.
