Boztepe Observation Deck offers sunset views over the Black Sea. The headline sights lie inland. Sümela Monastery is built into a sheer cliff face in the Altındere Valley, roughly an hour from Trabzon.  Founded in 386 AD, it has an impressive rock church and several chapels.  Uzungöl, a lake ringed by dense forest around 90 minutes from Trabzon, is the region’s other must-see.  Rize, the tea-producing capital, has steep hillsides terraced with tea plantations that supply most of the çay drunk across Turkey.
