#localdiscoveries While exploring Canterbury, I discovered Tankerton, a quaint little seaside spot just a bus ride away. It’s an easy day trip from Canterbury and even doable from London. Sharing a few local discoveries I found on this trip. 📍 Tankerton, Whitstable, Kent 🚌 Getting there · Canterbury → Tankerton: around 45 mins by bus · Single fares can be around £3 · London → Whitstable: roughly 1h 20m by train, then bus to Tankerton. 🌊 My Tankerton route · Tankerton Slopes - free, and the views are gorgeous. · Colourful beach huts + Marine Parade. · Tankerton Beach - shingle, quiet and lovely for a wander. · The Street - walk out at low tide only after checking the tide times. · Spot the old coastal cannons. · Sunset from the Slopes 🌅 🍴 Food discoveries · The Bears Trading Company - coffee, cakes, sandwiches, roughly £10-20 · Basil & Co - Italian, mains around £23-£32 · The Royal Tankerton - British food + sea views 💡 Fun fact · Tankerton Slopes are home to rare hog’s fennel. · A 16th/17th-century shipwreck has also been found on the beach. 👀 Crowd tip Go early on sunny weekends. For The Street, check the tide first and turn back well before it comes in. Have you discovered Tankerton before? What local spot would you add? #myitinerary #travel #canterbury #thingstodo #citydaytours #seascapes #mytraveldiary #hiddengems

About an hour and a half by train from London🚆 I visited Whitstable, a charming seaside town that makes for a perfect day trip! Whitstable is one of the UK's most famous oyster spots🦪 The town is lined with seafood restaurants and oyster bars where you can enjoy incredibly fresh seafood✨ This time, I also tried their famous Fish & Chips🐟🍟 Eating fish and chips right by the sea is just exceptional...! Taking a leisurely stroll around the harbor, browsing the colorful shops, sitting on a bench to look out at the ocean... It has such a relaxing vibe, completely different from London, and I felt so refreshed☺️🤍 It’s not as crowded with tourists as London, so it’s absolutely perfect for anyone wanting to experience a quintessential British port town!✨ If you have some extra time during your London trip, definitely check it out🇬🇧 📍Whitstable

If you’d told me one bus journey could take me from medieval streets to the seaside in the same day, I probably wouldn’t have believed you. But that’s exactly what happened with our little trip to Canterbury and Tankerton. We started the morning in Canterbury, and it honestly felt like walking onto a film set. Cobbled streets, wonky old buildings, hidden lanes and loads of independent cafes dotted about. We didn’t have much of an itinerary and I think that’s what made it so good. We just wandered, grabbed a coffee, ducked into a few shops and soaked it all in. If you’re visiting, definitely make time for Canterbury Cathedral, even if you only admire it from the outside, it’s seriously impressive. We also loved wandering down The King's Mile with all its quirky independent shops and stopping by Westgate Gardens for a peaceful riverside stroll. After a few hours, we hopped on the bus to Tankerton, and the change of scenery was unreal. One minute you’re surrounded by centuries of history, the next you’re looking out at the sea with colourful beach huts lining the promenade. It was peaceful without being boring, and there were loads of people out walking their dogs, having ice creams or just sitting by the water. While you’re there, don’t miss the famous The Street, Tankerton, a natural shingle spit that stretches out into the sea when the tide’s low. It’s such a unique spot and makes for some brilliant photos. The beach huts along the front are also ridiculously cute. Of course, no British seaside trip is complete without fish and chips. We found a proper local chippy, ordered a big portion and took it down to the seafront. Eating fresh fish and chips while watching the waves roll in just hits differently. The only problem? The seagulls clearly wanted some too. One thing I didn’t expect to enjoy as much was travelling by bus. There’s something quite nice about sitting by the window and watching Kent slowly change from historic town to coastline. It felt relaxed, easy and way less stressful than driving. What I loved most about this day out was that it didn’t need any big attractions or expensive tickets to be memorable. It was just a genuinely lovely mix of exploring, good food and sea air. If you’re after a low-effort day trip that feels like you’ve packed loads into one day, Canterbury and Tankerton are such an underrated duo. I went in expecting a nice day out and left wondering why I hadn’t visited sooner. And yes, I’m still thinking about those fish and chips. #canterbury #travel2026 #travel #daytrip #thingstodo

Only after staying in London for a long time do you realize— What truly captivates is not the hustle and bustle of the city center. Instead, it’s those small towns reachable by train within an hour, where the texture of time lingers. No crowded tourists, no excessive commercialization; walking on cobblestone streets, your pace naturally slows down. Here are a few of my personal “charm ambassadors” 👇 ① Rye 🚆 About 1 hour 5 minutes from London St Pancras ▪️ Medieval cobblestone streets winding and twisting ▪️ Home to many antique bookstores and independent galleries ▪️ The sea breeze mixed with the scent of red brick roofs is especially pleasant Mermaid Street is the soul of Rye, with its curved cobblestone path under a gray sky. Untouched by excessive renovation, the marks left by time are the most beautiful decoration. ② Marlow 🚆 About 1 hour from London Paddington ▪️ Nestled by the Thames River ▪️ White timber-framed houses feel especially fresh ▪️ Home to the most authentic English riverside life People strolling by the river, leisurely white sailboats, and neatly trimmed lawns—there’s no noisy crowd of tourists here, just the real weekend vibe of the British middle class. ③ Henley-on-Thames 🚆 About 1 hour from London Paddington ▪️ Rich royal rowing culture ▪️ Georgian architecture with elegant proportions and inherent style ▪️ Riverside lawns are perfectly maintained, restrained yet exquisite Henley is famous for the Henley Royal Regatta. The tidy riverbank is comforting, embodying the typical Old Money town temperament. ④ Whitstable 🚆 About 1 hour 20 minutes from London St Pancras ▪️ Brightly colored seaside wooden houses ▪️ Oyster culture is a unique hallmark here ▪️ A gathering place for many independent artists with attitude Whitstable isn’t refined but has its own character. The colorful wooden houses reflect the gray-blue sea, and every snapshot tells a story. ⑤ Windsor 🚆 About 55 minutes from London Waterloo ▪️ The royal castle stands majestically ▪️ Old neighborhoods hold stories of the past ▪️ A tributary of the Thames River flows around the town Windsor is famous for its castle, but the town’s streets are even more worth savoring. The proportions of old buildings, the layering of red bricks and stone, exude a calm aristocratic aura. ⑥ Canterbury 🚆 About 55 minutes from London St Pancras ▪️ Gothic cathedral with magnificent presence ▪️ Half-timbered houses with antique charm ▪️ The layers of history are clearly visible here Canterbury’s charm lies in its “historical density.” The district layout is clear, and if you love places rich in cultural atmosphere, this town will immerse you completely.

This is a very worthwhile church to visit. It was built in the Middle Ages, more than 1,000 years ago, and is one of the oldest Christian buildings in the UK. After years of expansion and renovation, it is quite magnificent. Gothic architecture, colorful glass, and the original appearance is preserved intact. It is a pity that there is no Chinese version of the audio guide at present.
似猫非喵Visitors commonly mention its peaceful atmosphere, making it a lovely spot for a stroll or a picnic. The gardens run along the River Stour, providing picturesque water views, especially with the weeping willows and vibrant flower beds. The area is well-maintained, and it's a favorite for both locals and tourists who appreciate nature.
_TI***fxIt was a lovely trip. There is a good walk to the end of the cliff if you are coming by train. At places, the walk is naturally steep because it's a hill, so I won't prefer going on the hottest days. The best time I would say would be March-April or August.
Div22Seeing some friends asking what style of chapel this is, I thought I'd write something... St Augustine Abbey, a monastery known as a world cultural heritage, is worth a visit. It is one of the most important monasteries in medieval England, with fascinating architecture, majestic memorials, and a charming atmosphere. Visiting this place is to seek spiritual cultivation, giving us the opportunity to touch the birthplace of spiritual cultivation in the English world. For nearly a thousand years, St Augustine's Abbey has been a center of learning and Christian spirituality. When these missionaries realized the difficulties they faced, Augustine and his companions wanted to give up their mission. But Pope Gregory strongly opposed it, so they were forced to continue their mission. They eventually arrived in the Kingdom of Kent, where King Ethelberht of Kent was one of the most powerful men in England. Although he had not yet converted to Christianity, perhaps because he married a Christian wife, King Ethelbert welcomed Augustine and his missionaries and let them land outside the walls of the East City of Canterbury. Augustine and his companions did not initially have much success in Canterbury. Later, with the help of Queen Bertha, King Ethelbert eventually converted to Christianity, and then more and more of his subjects did the same. Augustine later became the first archbishop of Canterbury (the capital of the Kingdom of Kent). The kings of England successively became Christian countries, and Canterbury became the religious capital of England. Within 100 years, Augustine's work changed the whole of England, and the monastery named after him was the center of British Christianity. Over the centuries, St. Augustine's Abbey developed into a great Romanesque monastery, one of the grandest and most influential monasteries in Europe. However, this power and influence did not last. During the reign of Henry VIII, the great monastery was destroyed. Walking among the ruins and breathing the ancient atmosphere can temporarily take us away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
