Getting there Take a Thameslink or Southern train on the London–Brighton line to Balcombe — about 40–50 minutes from London, usually with a change at East Croydon if you start from Victoria. From Balcombe station, follow the footpaths towards Ardingly Reservoir, then continue down to the River Ouse. The route eventually takes you directly under the viaduct, which is where the walk stops being “nice countryside” and becomes “why have I not done this before?” The viaduct The Ouse Valley Viaduct was built in 1838 to carry the London–Brighton railway over the River Ouse, and it is still doing exactly that. From below, its long line of semi-circular brick arches is genuinely spectacular — especially when a train crosses overhead and you get the full Victorian-engineering moment.
