Why will whiskey lovers adore this?
This is the "birthplace" of Nikka Whisky, founded by Masataka Taketsuru, who studied whiskeymaking in Scotland and returned to Yoichi to create his dream Japanese whiskey because of its very similar climate to Scotland.
A key feature is the continued use of coal-fired distillation, a method rarely used today. This gives Yoichi a robust character, with subtle smoky notes,
and a richer flavor than many other Japanese whiskey brands.
Highlights not to be missed:
1. Free Distillery Tour (book in advance):
Approximately 60 minutes.
Walk through the actual production process.
Ends with a free whiskey tasting.
2. Tasting Hall:
A whiskey tasting will be available after the tour. For serious whiskey enthusiasts, we recommend visiting the Tasting Bar in the museum, which offers rare and special edition whiskeys for an additional fee.
3. Nikka Museum
This provides a detailed look at Nikka's history and the life of Taketsuru, showcasing antique collectibles that whiskey lovers will adore.
4. Distillery Only Shop
The items that will make whiskey lovers' eyes light up are:
Exclusive Yoichi editions
Editions that are hard to find outside of Japan
Mini bottles for collectors
Many Reddit users say this shop is the place that makes their "wallets tremble" the most, as it offers distillery-exclusive items, some at prices significantly better than buying overseas.
