The ancient and mysterious spirit of the Ba people, thrilling and breathtaking scenery
Standing on the cliff top of Chain Cliff, the river breeze rushes in from the mouth of the Bing Shu Bao Jian Gorge. Below is the unbelievably green Yangtze River water. The remaining traces on the landslide site of Xintan on the opposite bank suddenly make you realize—this mountain was pulled back from the brink of collapse by iron chains. Before you go: transportation and tickets Chain Cliff is located on the south bank of the Yangtze River in the Changjiang Xiling Gorge, Qu Yuan Town, Zigui County, Yichang City. It lies between Bing Shu Bao Jian Gorge and Niu Gan Ma Fei Gorge, only 25 km from the Three Gorges Dam. · Self-driving: About 68 km from downtown Yichang, take the Three Gorges Expressway (a permit is required for the Night Pearl Triangle area) → Xiling Yangtze River Bridge → Maoping new county town → Qingtan Chain Cliff. The whole trip takes just over 1 hour. Navigate directly to "Chain Cliff Scenic Area." The last section entering the scenic area is a one-car-wide mountain asphalt road, with a steep mountain on one side and a cliff on the other. Passing other vehicles can be nerve-wracking. New drivers should proceed with caution. · Public transportation: From Yichang Bus Passenger Center, take Zigui 809 bus to Maoping Phoenix Mountain Station, then transfer to the Maoping–Shazhenxi shuttle bus. Going up: a mountain held by an iron chain The scenic area entrance is halfway up the mountain. After entering, there is a stone stairway. The path isn’t very steep but winds up the mountainside in layers. Every few steps, looking back reveals the Xiling Gorge, and the higher you go, the wider the view. On both sides of the path are villagers’ orange orchards. Visiting in April, you can see the rare sight of orange blossoms and fruit on the same branch, filling the air with fragrance. Climbing the steps, you’ll pass over a hundred scenic spots built along the mountain, including ancient mountain altars, totem pillars, Gui Xiang Temple, release ponds, soul-calling platforms, orange tribute gardens, Ba witch villages, and Wagang villages. The strong Chu culture flavor is evident—at the entrance, eight Chu kneeling figurines stand on both sides of the spirit path, and a 120-ton totem pillar hangs sky lanterns. After passing the soul-calling platform, there is a cliffside plank road built over a crack. Looking down, you can see the wide crack below—more than 5 meters wide and over 100 meters deep. Just one glance makes your legs tremble. This is where Chain Cliff gets its name: the mountain is full of cracks, and ancient people used iron chains to “lock” it to the cliff face. The area was originally called “locked mountain.” Those afraid of heights should be careful here. Some visitors admit, “It’s a little shocking. I’m afraid of heights and can’t look much.” However, the plank road has been reinforced and is safe. The mental challenge is up to you. Cliff top: the Yangtze River bends beneath your feet Climbing to the cliff top viewing platform, the view opens completely. Below is the emerald Yangtze River flowing steadily through the gorge. On the opposite bank are layers of green mountains. The three large red characters “Chain Cliff” stand out boldly on the cliff face. It’s hard to imagine how they were carved back then—perhaps someone hung in midair holding a rope, chiseling each stroke. Just thinking about it makes your legs weak. Blue sky overhead, precarious rocks underfoot, looking down, several cracks split the cliff rock into several sections. The widest could swallow a person. Near the cracks, the most eye-catching feature is a vertical iron chain cableway rebuilt in recent years. It runs along the hundred-foot cliff edge, giving a sudden sense of how difficult life was for ancient people—dozens of households in Yangping Village on the cliff could only enter and exit by stepping on a row of stone niches carved into the cliff, barely fitting one foot, requiring full concentration. Young people standing on the cliff top like to lean over the railing and shout into the gorge. Two seconds later, a muffled echo returns from the mountain wall. “The mountain is talking to me,” one guy laughed after shouting. For stress relief, this is better than any soundproof scream room. On clear days, you can see the Xintan landslide site on the opposite bank, facing Chain Cliff across the river. Looking at the remaining traces on that hillside, recalling the dangers this place has endured, then turning back to the cliff firmly secured by iron chains and modern anchors, a feeling of indescribable relief wells up inside. Historically, ancient people used iron chains to hold it, and modern engineering uses giant anchors to secure the unstable rock—two sets of iron chains working together to lock this mountain in place. After going down: the riverside is the hidden gem Going down is easier than going up. If you have time, be sure to visit the riverside at the foot of the mountain—this is the most underrated part of Chain Cliff. From the scenic area exit, you can take a path down to the riverbank, an area called Xiao Qingtan. In April, orange blossoms bloom by the river, mist rises from the water, and the mountains and river blend into an ink wash painting. If you’re lucky, after rain, your shoes will get wet, but the moment the river mist rolls in is worth the ticket price. Continue driving west to near the Micangkou Tunnel, where the legendary Bing Shu Bao Jian Gorge is located. There’s also an RV café by the roadside. Sit down for a drink, look at the cliffs across the gorge, and imagine the boatmen’s shouts and sighs from centuries ago. If you get hungry, the “Xia Jiang Ren Jia” restaurant at the scenic area entrance serves meals. Their specialty is stir-fried potatoes with Zha Guang peppers, paired with a bowl of “lazy tofu” made from stir-fried diced cured meat and shredded potatoes. It’s thick, hot, and perfect to drink down with the river breeze, soothing both heart and stomach. Practical tips · Best seasons: summer and autumn, but April for orange blossoms and October for oranges are also excellent · Parking: The parking lot at the scenic area entrance is built by villagers, 10 yuan per day · Physical demand: The stairs involve significant climbing. Even ladies over 50 admit to feeling breathless. Know your limits and stop at some scenic spots if needed · Combined trips: Chain Cliff + Three Gorges Dam + Qu Yuan’s hometown can be done in one day (close distances); or Chain Cliff + Jiu Wan Creek + Bing Shu Bao Jian Gorge along the south bank of Xiling Gorge on route G348, with continuous river views · Mobile signal: intermittent in the gorge. Ancient people firmly locked it with iron chains, and modern people secured it with anchors. This mountain has probably been through a lot—from being mined to riddled with holes, to being locked and remembered again. People are a lot like mountains sometimes. It doesn’t matter how many cracks there are; what matters is that it’s held together. The river breeze rushes through the gorge, and the three red characters “Chain Cliff” are especially quiet under the sunset. The mountain is still there, the river is still there, and the chains are still there—only now locked to the cliff and held deep in people’s hearts. If you’re coming from downtown Yichang, it’s recommended to see the Three Gorges Dam in the morning, drive to Chain Cliff at noon, and spend the afternoon daydreaming by the river—within one day, you’ll witness the grandeur of modern engineering and then the smallness and resilience of nature and ancient people. The car was parked in the underground garage. There was a staircase going up to the main entrance, which was very convenient!

The Qu Yuan Temple, located on Phoenix Mountain in Zigui County, was built to commemorate Qu Yuan. Construction began in the 15th year of the Yuanhe era of the Tang Dynasty (820 AD), initially situated at Qu Yuan Tuo, 5 li east of the ancient city of Guizhou. Since the 1970s, the temple has been relocated twice due to water conservancy projects. In July 1976, due to the construction of the Gezhouba Dam, the temple was moved to Xiangjiaping in Guizhou. In November 2006, due to the construction of the Three Gorges Dam, the temple was moved again to Phoenix Mountain in Zigui, and opened to the public in June 2010. The Qu Yuan Temple is located within the Qu Yuan's Hometown Scenic Area. From the viewing platform, one can see the Three Gorges Dam.
