It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site (the core of the Historic Centre of Macau) and the first of Macau's Eight Views. Construction began in 1602 and was completed in 1637, as the chapel of St. Paul's College (the first Western-style university in the Far East). It was destroyed by fire in 1835, leaving only the facade and stone steps. Because of its resemblance to a Chinese archway and the Cantonese transliteration of "St. Paul" as "Sanba," it is named the Ruins of St. Paul's. Constructed of granite, it stands 25.5 meters high and 23 meters wide, featuring five layers of Baroque and Oriental elements, earning it the nickname "a three-dimensional Bible."
