The grottoes were dug in the years of Huan Renshou (601 - 604), Tang Gaozong Yonghui four years (654), and were renewed on a large scale. The Charity Temple Grottoes were built for the emperors of the Sui and Tang Dynasties to travel to Lunxia to escape the summer heat to do Buddhist things. On June 25, 2001, Charity Temple Grottoes, as cultural relics of the Sui and Tang periods, were approved by the State Council and included in the list of the fifth batch of key cultural relics protection units nationwide.
