📌 Over the next month, Jinfo Mountain in Chongqing’s Nanchuan District is opening its gates. As a UNESCO World Heritage site and national 5A scenic area, its West and North Gates are waiving admission for all visitors—no residency restrictions, no quotas, no vouchers. Just show up and walk in.
🍁 Why go now
November at Jinfo Mountain falls into two distinct phases, each with its own charm:
Early November is the prime time for high-mountain foliage. Multicolored forests cascade down the slopes, and the Jinfo Sky Ladder trail winds right through them. Step onto the path and you’re surrounded by layers of color. Look up and you’ll see the sweeping outline of a karst mesa.
In late November, once a cold front moves in, the first snow often arrives. With some red leaves still lingering, snow falls quietly. Snow-dusted foliage—fall colliding with winter—is a rare sight in the mountains of southern China.
This one-month free-entry window neatly covers both periods.
🏔️ What to see on the summit
Jinfo Mountain holds multiple titles—UNESCO World Heritage site, national 5A scenic area, national scenic and historic interest area, and national forest park. Eons of geologic activity and a near-2,000m vertical drop created the “Ten Marvels”: the reclining Buddha of heaven and earth, the ancient Buddha grotto, the southern snowfield, the kingdom of rhododendrons, the cliffside boardwalk, the Jinfo Sky Ladder, the golden tortoise greeting the sun, layered emerald ridges, the ecological stone forest, and the sea of arrow bamboo.
In fall, the two most rewarding routes are the Jinfo Sky Ladder and the cliffside boardwalk—one threads through the foliage, the other rides the ridgeline—yielding very different photo angles.
🎫 How the free entry works and what it covers
Only the main gate admission is free. Cable car and shuttle bus transportation fees are not included.
⚠️ Note: The South Gate is not part of this promotion. Enter via the West or North Gate.
🏃 Join-in option: hiking challenge with cash prizes
The scenic area has added several “hiking challenge with cash prizes” events, tentatively on Oct 31, Nov 14, Nov 21, and Nov 28. Men’s and women’s groups are ranked separately:
1st place CNY 350
2nd–10th place CNY 200
11th–50th place CNY 80
Getting paid after a hike isn’t something you see every day. For rules and registration, go to the WeChat mini program "Jinfo Mountain Hiking Challenge."
♨️ Don’t rush off after the descent
Tianxing Town sits at the mountain’s foot. Cobblestone lanes follow a stream, and stilted Bayu-style houses rise in tiers. The fall breeze carries the scent of herbs and wood. Wander in, find a spot, and order local arrow bamboo shoots to fully unwind after the climb.
After dark, soak at Tianxing Hot Spring. Natural spring pools and herbal tubs sit amid the woods, with steam drifting through the trees. Slide those post-hike, aching legs into the water—words can’t quite capture how good it feels.
A balance of activity and calm—that’s the Jinfo Mountain rhythm.

💡 Practical tips
For foliage, go in early November. For snow on the foliage, wait for late November. Check the weather before you decide.
Temperatures vary widely on the mountain. It may be 20°C at the base and single digits at the top. Bring a windproof jacket and a hat.
Riding the cable car down is easier than up, but the most beautiful foliage is along the trail. If you have the stamina, hike up and ride down.
Dining options are limited at the top. Bring some snacks and water.
Weekends during the free-entry period get crowded. Go on a weekday if you can.
👉 Action plan: you’ve got a one-month window with two different scenes. If you plan early, aim for early November foliage. If you want snow, watch the late-November forecast and go when it hits. Once your dates are set, purchase combo tickets in advance via the mini program or your preferred platform, then scan on site to enter without lining up.
