The main church was built in the 5th century and destroyed by the Persians in 614, and was later massively reconstructed in the 11th century according to prototypes, with no modifications for nearly 1,000 years. The noble skeletons were discovered during the 19th century during the cleanup of the interior of the main church, and a large number of Byzantine and Crusade-era building fragments were found.
