Sporthotel Ellmau in Tirol

Sporthotel Ellmau. We stayed here with family in August 2023 and we also stayed here in the summer of the previous year. We were very impressed with the hotel, the staff, our room and the excellent food. The Sport is a very large hotel, is situated near to the centre of Ellmau village and the Astberg chairlift is nearby. Ellmau has plenty of facilities such as cycle hire, gift shops and supermarket with plenty of beautiful walks and hiking routes. The Sport Hotel is a very beautiful building built in traditional Tyrolean style. The staff are very helpful, friendly and polite. Despite its large size it’s warm and welcoming. There are plenty of facilities in the hotel. The weather in early August 2023 was not so good but there was a large lounge area with plenty of comfortable seats. There are excellent spa facilities and a gym. There is also an indoor and outdoor pool which is beautiful in its design and a third indoor pool which is for adults only within the main spa area. On the lower level, a jacuzzi and numerous steam rooms and saunas of various temperatures, ideal after a long day walking or skiing if you visit in winter. The beautiful restaurant and food. This is another fantastic feature of the hotel. The restaurant is divided into separate intimate eating areas with different themes. Modern theme, classical theme or Tyrollean theme. We eat in the in the traditional Tyrollean style Baeurnhof stüble. The food is excellent, of high quality and a lot of attention made of its delightful presentation. There are fully cooked breakfasts with eggs, scrambled, fried or boiled. Very nice bacon, sausages and various hams, cereals, fruits and many more foods. A news letter is provided on your table each morning with suggestions of daily activities in and around Ellmau. Evening meal main course is chosen at breakfast time and there are 4 main options including a vegetarian option a fish option and two choices of soup. There are 5 courses. An appetiser, a soup and then salad from buffet. Main course and then a choice of desserts the from buffet. A delicious children’s menu is also provided for younger guests. During the week there are several themed evenings such as pasta buffet night which has a range of very tasty good quality pasta dishes. Also an antipasti evening and an excellent Friday Tyrolean farmers buffet with beautiful cuts of meats, vegetables and other delightful local cuisine. Drinks are served to your table and can either be paid for at the end of the meal, at reception or at the end of your stay. There is an excellent choice of wines to suit your meal. Beers and soft drinks are also available. My room was excellent and very clean with a proper bath and shower. The rooms include a free safe for valuables and comfortable furnishings. We stayed as a family and had the most amazing time, our room was beautiful with stunning views. Wonderful evening meals in the restaurant and then cosy evenings by the fire playing cards. On our last day I left my ski goggles in the room, the staff very kindly collected them and posted them back to me, so very kind. We very much plan on returning to your beautiful hotel.

This beautiful hotel never ceases to amaze us with the comfort and cuisine. We unfortunately had poor weather for the duration of our visit which was one week, but the comfortable seating areas did help and of course the swimming pool, and spa areas also a fitness centre. Our accommodation was excellent with the traditional tyrolean style room with carpeting on the floor, and a beautiful view if the Wilder Kaiser Mountains. It seems the majority of the rooms are being changed to more city style, I hope this hotel,does maintain its Tyrolean comfort. Our room was thoroughly cleaned every day, to an excellent standard! The restaurant we were in is traditional pine style, the other restaurants have a black chairs and like booths, again more city design, but tastefully decorated. Only three small niggles, the scrambled eggs at breakfast on our past visits were the best ever tasted but this visit, not the same, perhaps ready made egg liquid, I don’t know…. maybe it’s just me.. The cake buffet on Sunday a lovely special treat, the cakes were 3 varieties squares of cake which was still slightly frozen, but no ice cream or anything for children, but it was served indoors… perhaps that’s the reason The usual slippers in the swimming bag with the gowns were no longer available, I relied on these to go to the pool, so was barefooted. As these niggles are so small they did not have a negative impact on our holiday whatsoever. I just want the scrambled egg like it was … This hotel has everything guests need, and I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel in this beautiful tyrolean village of Austria. You are happy to be fobbed off with a room that you didn’t book or wouldn’t have booked and then to be insulted by rude and arrogant young reception staff! Booked online a specific room we had previously stayed in and then given a room close by with a claim it was an “Edelweiss “ room - smaller and darker than the previously name “Deluxe” room. We were told on enquiry that we should have checked the room number - really!!! Shown another 2 rooms which were not acceptable and then told we could take a suite but for any of the rooms we would have to pay any extra charges. My wife then asked for our deposit to be refunded which was done with the credit card thrown back at her with the comment “we don’t want you staying here anyway” - previously stayed here on a number of occasions. No idea of hospitality and informed the Tourist Information Office manager of our experience and she did not appear surprised and was going to raise the matter and other “negative” comments with the owners! We chose the Sporthotel over our normal choice of the Hotel Kaiserblick as it is in the village and not on the hill - bad choice! We contacted the Kaiserblick - we have stayed there more than 15 times - and got a great room and warm welcome from the owners Greta and Armin. Reception area looks dark and unappealing with the feel of the “Marie Celeste” Stay at the Kaiserblick!

I've stayed at many of these alpine wellness hotels and I have to say, this one is my least favorite. There are a few positives. First - I have a beautiful room, with nice views of the mountains. However the balcony I have is so small that it's really not usable. Plus it's connected with the balcony of the room next door and they have a baby, so it's not peaceful. Dinner last night was fine, but nothing spectacular. No one ever stopped by my table and asked if I'd like another glass of wine or something else to drink. On the positive side, I did like the dessert buffet. Breakfast this a.m. nothing particularly special. All of the standard items you'd find in any hotel. Normally these wellness hotels have an amazing breakfast spread. Probably the most disappointing - I planned to spend my last 4 days here and expected to enjoy the wellness area and relax before returning home. But the wellness facilities don't open until 3:00! Had their web site mentioned that, I would never have booked here. Today it's raining and it would be so nice to utilize these facilities. If there wasn't a cancelation penalty, I would check out tomorrow and find a better place for my last 2 days. Despite the good or the bad, a review comes down to one basic question - would you stay here again? And sadly my answer would be no.

This is the third time we have stayed at the Sporthotel for a skiing holiday. The hotel is lovely with spacious rooms, a welcoming bar and comfortable lounge area with a log fire. The spa area has fantastic facilities. The food was amazing - so well presented and delicious. All staff members that we met were welcoming, friendly and helpful. The hotel is a short walk to the button lifts or to the ski bus stop which will take you the gondola station. I would definitely recommend this hotel.
