Kohea Kai Hotel Maui

First, I want to start by sharing that the front desk staff was very polite and friendly. She made the check in process smooth and was delightful to speak with. When we checked into the room at first glance it looked nice, however shortly after being there my girlfriend uncovered some very disgusting things. We got in late in the evening and were ready to sleep, so she went to turn down the bed and I hopped in the shower, the bathroom drawers that held the towels were hard to open as they looked to have been painted shut almost. During this time my girlfriend noticed a few hairs on the sheets underneath the comforter. She was rightfully concerned and began to look around the room. She noticed little black dots along the base boards which is usually an indication of bugs, which she then saw one crawl from under the base board. As I got out of the shower she shared what she found and asked me to see if there was another room available. I got dressed and headed to the front office, the girl at the front desk asked if we had photos to share or if she could see the room to verify, which we agreed to show. She accompanied me back to the room. As we entered the room my girlfriend shared she had checked the bed and noticed staining on the sheets, and there were a few layers of fitted sheets on the bed, one grosser than the other and when doing so revealed bugs were under those sheets. She was horrified and we asked to check out immediately. The front desk girl seeing these things apologized and said she would check with her manager and took photos to share. Shortly after speaking with the manager she informed me that I could indeed receive a refund and also offered if we wanted to switch to another room. After seeing how disgusting the room we were in was, we did not fee comfortable that another room would be any better and decided to leave and search for a new place to stay. With this place being right near the beach, I can see the price being attractive, but after the experience on the inside, it was clearly not worth it. Apparently had I done a little more research, there were other reviews noting a similar experience.

One night stay only. Service at front desk was top notch. The room was dingy, dank and run down. Low nightly rate. Across the street from the beach. A mile or so from a couple of nice local little shopping areas. The bird’s songs at sunrise was amazing.

We would never recommend this hotel to anyone and only writing a review to warn others in order to not have you go through what we did. Customer service was inadequate, rooms are disgusting and as others have stated A LOT of false advertising. Our door lock was broken and would not function, did not feel safe, told the front desk and nothing was done. Not even a offer to move us to another room. Room was not cleaned beforehand or during our stay even though we requested housekeeping. Shower was so deathly we had to request a mat which someone did drop off for us. Mold, mildew even moss (something green) growing places in the room from all the humidity. Images for our suite showed a stove which was absent. The staff tried to tell us they are only for suites but I mentioned we had a suite and showed the pictures from Choice Hotels depicting the stove in our suite selection and all they could tell us was there is no stove in your room. We mentioned our concerns to the staff and nothing was attended to. No one even asked how our stay was when we checked out, not sure if that is customary since the rooms are in such terrible condition. I have seen positive reviews for the big family suites. I would say the staff most likely spends all their time and money taking care of the most expensive suites and not the other rooms unfortunately. Pool and hot tub were not clean and pool is very small if another couple or even just one other person is in it, not comfortable. This wasn't an issue for us because we did not come to use the pool but in case you are. One last thing they are developing a new resort or something next door so the construction noise is very loud and constant. This was a very special trip for us and Maui is amazing. We recommend the island for sure, we had an incredible time just not at this hotel!

The rooms are very clean! Literally a walk across the street to the best beaches. Staff so friendly anytime went into the lobby area. To pick up coffee and quick snacks that they have provided. Recommend to stay when available.

Typical Kihei dump(spruced up). NO BREAKFAST(promised)., pkg cookies. Tiny pool fiberglass, home type spa. very loud air-conditioner. Tv very small far away, can’t hear over AC. Parking very tight. Lanai pretty plants snd rocks. Construction material and mess everywhere. clean best they can but fungus growing by shower. Price should be $120. Go to days inn south kihei which is great on the beach for $340. Bus stop is not marked. Coffee pot blew breaker, reset ? Our door opens to car driving on sidewalk 3 inches to door WATCHIUT! Roomsmells like mildew. Laminate floor very scuffed up. Shoddy tile work. 1 min for warm water. Hear people next door and above. Car noise from highway starts at 4 am.

Last week we stayed at this hotel for one night and I would have to say we did not enjoy our stay. First, we arrived at 3pm and the room was not ready until 4pm. We were assigned room #612 which was on the ground floor and had a king size bed along with a sofa bed. When we got inside the overwhelming chemical cleaning smell hit us. We had to immediately open the sliding glass door for fresh air but after a couple hours the smell still remained. In addition we found the room to be dirty...like walls and baseboards. Also the cushions on the sofa bed were stained. Although the room was dated some of the lighting fixtures had been updated and the bathtub/sink looked newer as well. We did like the brightness in the bathroom as well as the sheets for the king bed. We also thought all the staff we came across were very friendly and helpful. This is a 2 star hotel and I would definitely not recommend it based on the condition and the total cost of $432 for the one night stay.

I couldn't understand why some people loved and others hated. Now I do. We booked Friday and Sunday nights, both on points. Friday’s room number was 315. When we walked in the room reeked of mold and a flowery cleanser. My husband’s allergies immediately kicked in. The room was run-down and small. The walls were pock marked with holes and spackled-over holes. The curtains looked like they had been balled up for weeks and then hung. There was visible mold in the space under the air conditioner. The bathroom window was opaque but my husband said he could still make out that I was in the shower. The parking was a single one-way lane with no exit, so narrow that you had to drive with your tires next to the doors. The closet door had been removed and a chair placed underneath, so if you wanted to sit in the chair, the hangers were right above you. At one point during the night, my husband wondered aloud how many people had died there. We tried to cancel Sunday night, but were not allowed to. I begged the desk clerk, asking if there were any newer rooms that maybe didn’t smell so strongly of mold. We were put in room 621 in a different building. What a difference! No mold, no repaired holes in the wall. It was a bigger space. On the map, they are both listed as standard rooms, but they couldn’t be more different. So don’t stay in Building 300. Building 600 is fine. And I can’t speak to buildings 100 or 200.

I wrote to the manager when we left 2 days early as we just weren’t happy and though the pictures don’t reflect the site. Still haven’t had any response or acknowledgment which is disappointing. The positives, it is a lovely location and the rooms are spacious, it’s on a beach with a restaurant right next door. Disappointed in our check in experience, charged $25 for checking in slightly early when the hotel is empty and rooms are ready seemed unnecessary. Check in staff were rude but I understand from others that probably having a bad day. The pool isn’t like in the pictures, it’s tiny and dirty. The black out blinds aren’t black out blinds and the roof top terrace was closed. Never left a hotel early but this place just really didn’t live up to expectations. I’m really unsure why this place gets such positive reviews the price point and reality just don’t match up.

We stayed in the 3BR suite and was NOT disappointed! The suite was massive, they could have easily put another room into the space. The kitchen was newly updated and well appointed. Beds were super comfortable and directly across from the beach. Isana Japanese restaurant next door was nice after a long day of traveling. Jacuzzi was nice too after a long day, new and deep seated. Staff was super helpful and kind. The only negative was the dusty exterior of our unit. The lainai could use a good sweep. Very few places in Maui offered a one night rental, so all in all, no complaints.
