"I initially overlooked the peeling paint on the walls and the lack of disposable toothbrushes and toothpaste when I checked in. But then, at breakfast, I picked up a small steamed bun, and as I took a bite, I saw mold spots... that's just unacceptable! The chicken also tasted sour, which is something I absolutely cannot tolerate!"

"The location is a bit far from the nearest subway station; it took us about 25 minutes by taxi to get there. However, since our flight home was at 8 AM, this was the closest option to Pudong Airport. Plus, there's a free shuttle bus early in the morning to take guests to the airport. Overall, the experience was good. It would have been even more perfect if the lobby manager had smiled a bit more while providing service. 😊"

"The hotel was easy to find. Upon check-in, they offered an airport transfer service, which was a nice touch. The room quality was fair for the price, offering good value for money. The airport transfer was a bus, and it departed punctually, taking less than twenty minutes to reach the airport, leaving plenty of time before my flight. Overall, I was very satisfied."

"We checked in around 8 PM on the 26th, and the lady at the front desk was lovely. She gave us a free room upgrade and arranged for my friend and me to be on the same floor with a great view. When we checked out on the 29th, the short-haired lady, I think her name was Moon, was very professional and efficiently handled our check-out and extension. The bell staff were also fantastic; they consistently helped us with the car doors and loading luggage, and even brought our bags up to the room – very enthusiastic. The housekeeping auntie was also very polite; she noticed we drank a lot of water and left extra for us during cleaning, which was very thoughtful. Just a minor note: we found hair in both rooms on the day we checked in, and the used, wet bathrobes weren't replaced after the first night's cleaning. We'll definitely bring our family to stay here on our next visit to Shanghai, and we look forward to an even better experience next time."

"The service provided by the front desk was excellent. They are so helpful even helping us to reserve a table for dinner and make an appointment to see a doctor. They provided us with directions and guided us how to book a Didi etc. They also helped me collect parcels on behalf and sent any food delivery up to my room via the robot. It's so convenient. In addition, they also provide unlimited mineral water both at the lobby and room. I stayed at the second floor where the restaurant and laundry room is at, hence it's so convenient for us. Love the laundry facilities with free detergent. I hope there are more varieties for breakfast and supper as I got bored after a few days. Super are limited to porridge and freshly cooked noodles. The breakfast area can be crowded at certain times and takes time to find a table. You can asked for containers to pack the food back to room if you doesn't want to eat there. The room is big and clean. The location of the hotel is not near the metro station hence you can only take Didi or their shuttle bus. Although there is a shuttle bus to Nanjing road but still need to walk a distance to the shopping area. The mall opposite hotel is called 香ęøÆ名都 mall, there is a supermarket, haidilao and a number of eateries."

"The free airport shuttle service is incredibly convenient! I took a late flight and didn't get my luggage until after midnight. The shuttle runs every half hour, which was a warm welcome, haha. Both the shuttle drivers and the front desk staff were really nice. The drivers helped with my luggage, and when the front desk agent found out I wasn't leaving until noon the next day, she specifically arranged a room further inside the hotel to ensure I wouldn't be disturbed by guests catching early shuttles. The hotel breakfast is simple, but more than enough to fill you up. The room was huge, super comfortable for one person, and overall, the value for money is outstanding."

"The thoughtful staff proactively arranged two booked rooms to be side-by-side on the same floor. Major conveniences include free on-site laundry facilities, with the gym smartly located right beside it for efficient time management. The gym has basic, adequate equipment. A significant added benefit is the complimentary shuttle bus, with schedules easily available at the front desk to help guests plan outings. These amenities provide excellent savings and convenience. The main consideration is the limited immediate neighborhood, with only one convenient shop nearby, so guests may wish to bring specific essentials. The free shuttle also requires guests to check its schedule upon arrival to plan trips accordingly. Overall, the hotel is highly recommended for its clean, functional, and thoughtful service, making for a smooth and hassle-free stay that excels in practical comforts over luxury."

"As expected from a Jinling-affiliated hotel, the management and service are top-notch. It's an established five-star hotel with a rich heritage. Since we had a child with us, the hotel pleasantly surprised us with a welcome fruit platter and a plush pony toy. They also thoughtfully prepared kid-sized slippers, toothbrushes, and toothpaste, along with disposable bathtub and toilet covers. The bathtub setup was excellent; you could soak and watch TV, which kept our little one thoroughly entertained. We originally planned to go out, but the hotel itself was so much fun that our child didn't even want to leave. The hotel's biggest highlight is undoubtedly its fantastic food, from afternoon tea to dinner, and even the complimentary late-night porridge. During our one-day stay, we ended up eating five meals (plus breakfast and lunch the next day). Our child gave the hotel's dining a very high rating. The prices are reasonable, and the food is delicious, making it incredibly good value for money."

Shanghai Travel Guide

Getting Around Shanghai

Shanghai is a city with a huge flow of overseas tourists. If you’re flying, there are two main airports: Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG) and Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport (SHA). But most international flights land at Pudong Airport.

Pudong Airport is about 45 kilometers from downtown and handles most international flights. You can get to the city by metro, an airport bus, or if you’re feeling fancy, the Maglev Train—it’s fast and kinda cool!

On the other hand, Shanghai Hongqiao airport is just 15 kilometers from the city center and mostly deals with domestic flights. You’ve got metro lines 2 and 10 to zip you straight to city.

Tips: If you're catching a red-eye flight, consider staying at one of these hotels that offer airport shuttle services to make your trip a breeze.

Best Districts to Stay in Shanghai

If you’re not sure where to stay, areas like Nanjing Road, or Jing’an District are popular options for visitors.

As you're visiting Shanghai for the first time, do yourself a favor and stay near Nanjing Road. I've had countless friends visit, and this area never disappoints! You'll be right next to The Bund, surrounded by amazing food spots, and the subway can zip you anywhere in the city.

Additionally, Jing'an is lovely with its temples and fancy malls, Changning District is also really chill with beautiful parks like Shanghai Zoo and the beautiful Zhongshan Park.

Top Attractions in Shanghai

Shanghai is filled with a blend of traditional and modern attractions. From magical theme parks to iconic skyscrapers and historic gardens, there's something for everyone.

Shanghai Disneyland

Enter a world of enchantment where fairy tales come to life. Marvel at the lifelike animals in Zootopia, the first-ever thrilling zone inspired by the DisneyĀ·Pixar film "Zootopia." The park's magical atmosphere make it a perfect family getaway.

The Bund

Take a leisurely stroll along the Bund, Shanghai's famous riverside promenade. Lined with historic European-style buildings and modern skyscrapers, it offers a striking contrast between the city's past and present. Enjoy a river cruise to see Shanghai's skyline from a different perspective or simply people-watch as you marvel at the architecture.

Yu Garden

Step into the serene world of Yu Garden, a classic Chinese garden dating back to the Ming Dynasty. This picturesque sanctuary features intricate landscapes, ancient bridges, and tranquil ponds. Wander through the lush greenery and admire the delicate pagodas and rock formations. Don't miss the market nearby, where you can buy traditional souvenirs and snacks.

MM467266****Absolutely thrilled with my stay! The room was small, but I absolutely adored it. It was spotlessly clean, and the mattress offered the perfect balance of firmness and softness. They even provided a selection of both memory foam and cotton pillows, which were incredibly comfortable. While the room had a ventilation system, it lacked a window, so it could feel a little stuffy at times, but it was perfectly acceptable. The bathroom and shower were kept immaculately clean, which was very reassuring. The hairdryer was also excellent – I forgot the brand, but I'm seriously considering buying one for myself, haha! They provided fresh disposable towels, disposable slippers, and bottled water daily. Plus, the lobby offered complimentary lemon water and hot tea. However, there was no designated area to hang or dry clothes. If you're on a multi-day trip, it's best to pack enough outfits for each day.

ББатаI was a guest in this hotel, between December 22 and 27. I booked an Elegant Queen Room. However, I have to say that there is not much elegant about it. There are no slippers in the room. Air conditioners external units are placed literally two meters from your windows, and as you can see, and there are so many of them. I strongly recommend buying earplugs before checking in. The room was 517, so if possible please avoid it. One more thing. Me and my partner had sexual intercourse, and in one moment, I saw a person one floor above, clearly visible through the windows. That's not even other apartment, it is some unfinished space, that looks ruined. The curtains simply were not fully pulled, my mistake, but I didn't expect to see random person above šŸ˜… There is no locker, so your things would have to be placed all over the room. Staff is very nice, and super kind. Expect warm welcome every time you move by reception desk. I bought some sausages in local market, and I asked the staff if they would keep it in the fridge for me. They accepted. However, I forgot to take it when I checked out. I asked them if they could send me the package to my city, and they did it promptly. Good service, truly. The breakfast is one of the best I have ever seen in a hotel. Location is very close to the Bund, Financial center, and subway station (line 14, Yuanshen Road) is almost opposite the hotel. All together, room is definitely subpar, and it doesn't justify the price. Everything else is near perfect.

AAmy Nuengruthai PathumwongseAs this is The Ritz-Carlton, expectations are naturally high — and they were certainly met. From the moment I arrived, the check-in experience was warm and welcoming, accompanied by genuine smiles. I would especially like to compliment Chris (I remember her name because it reminds me of Christmas). She was exceptionally friendly, helpful, and thoughtful, showing true attentiveness and care. Her service perfectly reflected the high standards and gracious hospitality that The Ritz-Carlton is known for. One small tip for future guests: it may be best to avoid corner rooms. While they are comfortable, the view can be limited, and the room door is very close to the neighboring room. You may occasionally hear noise when the neighboring door opens or closes. Aside from this minor point, everything else was perfectly fine.

BBenDoverrrOverall a great stay at Novotel Shanghai Pudong Chuansha. The room was clean and spacious, and the robot delivery service was a nice touch. Service was generally very good. The hotel is also conveniently located near Shanghai Disneyland, which is a plus. Breakfast was quite basic with limited choices, and the lifts can be slow at times. Suitable for couples or staying with a spouse and children, but lacks privacy when sharing with parents or siblings. The toilet and shower area is very small with no space to hang clothes inside. The bed faces the mirror outside the bathroom, affecting privacy. Despite these minor issues, it was a comfortable stay and good value overall.

WWenmangxiaoding🌟 Five-star recommendation! This hidden gem of a room in Jing'an far exceeded my expectations! The curved sofa in the living room has an amazing texture, super soft and incredibly comfortable. The bedroom is decorated warmly and tastefully, with the wallpaper and furniture perfectly complementing each other. The room was clean and tidy; you can tell a lot of thought went into the wooden floors and soft furnishings. Plus, it's located right in the heart of Jing'an District, making getting around super convenient. I'll definitely choose this place again next time I'm in Shanghai!

JJeremyKeaWe had a very pleasant stay at this hotel. The rooms were clean and offered enough space for a comfortable stay. The staff was friendly and always willing to help. The location is convenient, with a metro station about a 10-minute walk away, making it easy to explore the city. There’s also a mall nearby with some restaurants, which was very handy. Overall, a great base for visiting Shanghai.

CCindyYe12This time, my bestie and I traveled with our families, and this three-story townhouse we chose was exceptionally stylish and beautifully decorated, feeling incredibly cozy. We had separate floors, ensuring privacy, which is rare for a trip – I actually slept really well! There's also a small terrace upstairs, perfect for my husband who enjoys a cigarette. Who says you can't have it all? Here, you can experience the leisurely nightlife, the bustling Shanghai, and the charm of old alley neighbors all at once. Step outside and you're right by Nanchang Road and the Science Hall, with Huaihai Middle Road just a block away. The streets are lined with romantic French plane trees, perfect for a leisurely stroll and some photos.
