We stayed here for a few short days in Madrid. The location is very convenient, both in regarding to walking distances and metro stops and buses. Plaza del Sol and Plaza Mayor can be visited by foot or transit. As well there are shops and restaurants nearby. The hotel is on a higher floor within a secure building and entry is by key code (and buzzed in when you first arrive). It is nicely decorated and kept very clean. The bathroom has a shower with good water pressure and plenty of light. Our room was 2 twin beds with nightstands, lights, and conveniently placed plugs. There was also a desk, TV, and area to hang clothes. Our room looked out to the inner courtyard and was quiet. The air conditioning worked though we found we didn’t need it at that time of year with the ceiling fan sufficing. The staff were very kind, professional, and helpful especially since our flight was a very late night arrival. I would definitely stay here again.

I rated this hotel a 5 because of its very special location next to lively Santa Ana square, the staff (especially Barbara who checked us in) and the varied breakfast in charming surroundings. The rooms are interestingly designed per the website and plushly decorated. 214 was extremely quiet since it had great sound proofing and a view to an interior courtyard. All the standard rooms face internally and have adequate space. I originally booked a superior room but they all face Calle de las Huertas and I was afraid of the noise. In addition to the window sound proofing, there is a very thick velvet curtain that aids to cut down noise but I did not want to take the chance. I was cheerily refunded the price difference. The superior room on the 4th floor was of course bigger, had very large windows and double the storage space but for me quiet is better. My only negative comment is that, although superficially clean, both the bathroom and bedroom floors needed TLC. The tiles need a special reagent (and/or scrubbing) to remove dirt built up and the bedroom rug desperately needs a deep clean heat shampoo. I did mention the issue to the front desk but I understand that this process may require significant commitment from the management. In this area the expectations for a 4 star hotel were not met.

The staff was very friendly and welcoming, they upgraded me at check in to a very nice suite for no extra charge! The room was very large and super chic & clean. The rooftop pool was an amazing amenity that we great use of during our stay. Staff members Jamie, Martin and Iva were amazing and made my first trip to Madrid one to remember. I will definitely be coming back and staying at the Axel.

We have stayed here several times and tried all the dormitory bed and rooms they have there. Facilities are good and very clean! Services provided were very good with friendly and very helpful staff. The location is great. However, during this trip the common area was fully occupied. It was because there was an old American couple who did not seem to go out. Every time we went in to make tea they were there occupying the sofa! What bothers us most was that every time we put the kettle on to make tea. They would go take our water to refill their cups or make a new cup of tea. And we had to put on another kettle of water. These are really undesirables! A couple of days later their son arrived and they still sat there most of the time and occupied the area! I wonder what sort of people would make a trip all the way to Madrid and sit in a hostel most of the day and evenings?

The location and the staff are outstanding. The front desk Juan made sure all of our needs were met after minor misstep upon checking. The bar areas are attended by Gregory with great attention and provided all information that were presented. The breakfast is absolutely worth it. The multiple options are outstanding. The stay was exceptional and we recommend it highly. THANK YOU!
Hostal Castilla I Atocha

I stayed at the Hostal Castilla I Atocha for a couple of nights. It was travelling solo so the cosy room was good enough for me (basic but clean and decent) It had private bathroom and the staff at the reception was there 24h. They were friendly and helpful. Wifi was free and I had good signal. I also liked the location as it was very close to Atocha Station and it was easy for me to walk there the day I decided to catch the train to Toledo. Important museums like Reina Sofia are close and there are shops and supermarkets all within easy reach. Price wise I though it was a bit expensive but perhaps it was because it was in January during a trade show taking place in the city (Fitur) which tends to be a busy period for Madrid. I was fairly happy with my choice and stay at this hotel and I think it is a good choice for solo travelers.
